Open Source Education Grants Iteachnet stands for the premise that what matters above all in education is the opportunity we give our students to be co-authors, rather than mere viewers of the world in which they will live. In our increasingly technically-oriented times, being a participant, let alone an author, requires being comfortable with technology. To be afraid or dismissive of technology is to hand over the future to someone else.
Teachers, too, can expect to find themselves at the mercy of the tools (and the people who make them) of which they are ignorant. While remaining ignorant may seem to be a prerogative of their age and experience, doing so has unfortunate consequences for their students. They will use the Web and other new technologies without the benefit of the wise guidance teachers have always provided their students.
