Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

  • Project Assignments. Here are the project assignments Miriam Hieber's 5th graders were given. This assignment was partly a take home project, and partly done in class.
  • Using Blooms Taxonomy with Geology Assignments. This approach was taken by Carol Cisky and involves a written, pictoral and verbal assignments on all the levels of Blooms Taxonomy relating to geology.
  • Mining for Minerals. Here is a Science Lab activity that is both yummy and educational. Students learn about the perils of mining for minerals and then get to eat the results!
  • Project Assignments. This was a differentiated approach, used by Jill Seamster, using the same list of projects as Miriam Hieber. This was not a take home assignment, but had to be done in class.
  • Technology Objectives students met while working on this web project.
  • Dinosaurs. A second grade activity.
  • Language Arts objectives and this web site. Rock People poems and Tree stories. A rock activity (inanimate object personification) which are Language Arts connections. These were done by students in Mrs. Hieber's and Mrs. Cisky's class.

This is the latest brief for two gap-year students from Bristol who have turned down travelling the world for taking on engineering contracts like this one. Alex Thompson, 19, and Iain Purvis, 18, are employed by their former school, John Cabot City Technology College, as teaching assistants as well as young engineers. The pair receive education bursaries of £250 a month for a three-day week and help GCSE and A-levels pupils with their assignments as well as taking on projects from industry. Iain says the scheme has been "invaluable" Their work so far has included designing and building a commemorative bench for a churchyard and producing 200 trophies for the school's celebration of achievement awards.

Are school teachers in short supply?
    Updated 18 January 2002, 09.31
A school in England has had 13 teachers in only 14 weeks because they couldn't find a permanent teacher. Do you think this is big problem in schools in Britain? Are you at a school where you've had more teachers than hot dinners? And what do you think should be done about it? E-mail us now! I am in my final year of high school and have had five supply teachers for science. My class are fed up with it! Rachel, 15, Luton Our school PE teacher left on maternity leave at the end of September and ever since then we have had at least 10 different supply teachers. I've had three teachers since I started my school and now I don't even have a proper teacher. The government should stop thinking about how you can make schools more technological in the future and how you can sort out the problem we have now! They keep trying to bring solutions which will come into existence in about 2004 and forget about how to sort it now for those of us with key exams coming up this summer! Anon, 14, London

    Middle School Teacher Staff Positions
Three middle school teachers from Worcester County work with the campers during their daytime hours (9am to 5pm), and are invited to participate in whatever evening or weekend activities they are interested in. They participate in staff training to become familiar with the engineering design process as we teach it to young girls. They (and three high school students) are assigned to assist one team of ten campers as they work to complete their Engineering Design Project during the two-week program. During the hours of each day allotted for the project, they help the girls meet specific goals set for each day and facilitate the sharing of ideas. The projects themselves are not intensely technical, and the teachers do not need extensive computer or technological knowledge. What they do bring to the team is an all-important adult perspective and the experience of knowing how to work with girls this age. The reason that the problems given to the team are not intensely technical is because the essence of engineering is solving problems for a customer. Many times, engineers today use computers or other high-tech equipment to develop or implement the solution. However, these are simply tools, and use of such tools will not be necessary for the projects selected for this program. Teachers do find that they can tie aspects of the project to the math and science curricula that the girls have just had, and that they can use many of the techniques used for the engineering design project during their regular school year activities.

House backs expanded loan deal for teachers
Story Tools WASHINGTON (AP) The House voted Wednesday to more than triple the aid offered to teachers who take on high-demand classes in the nation's neediest schools. The House measure, approved overwhelmingly, would forgive up to $17,500 in debt for reading specialists and teachers of math, science and special education. Those who qualify would have to commit to teaching in poor schools for at least five years. Current law allows a maximum of $5,000 in erased loans. The expanded program would be enough to wipe out many students' federal loan debt, according to the Education Department. President Bush included a version of the loan plan in his 2004 budget proposal. Nationwide, schools face long-standing problems of recruiting and retaining teachers in the topics targeted by the House bill. What's more, the No Child Left Behind law now requires every teacher of a core subject to meet state and federal "highly qualified" standards by 2005-06. The House on Wednesday also approved a bill designed to improve the accountability of teacher-training programs by aligning them with the new education law, signed by Bush in 2002.
