Developing Writers: A Workshop for High School Teachers presents practical and philosophical advice for teaching writing, while examining issues every teacher faces—such as high-stakes assessments and dealing with differently abled students. Eight video programs feature teachers in diverse classrooms around the country who are helping their students grow as skilled and effective writers. Participants will observe how the teachers and their students work together to create writing communities. Professional writers will share their processes as they move from initial concepts to publication, and comments from researchers, theorists, students, and teachers add context. A workshop guide and Web site provide activities and additional information to help participants develop effective instructional strategies to bring back to the classroom.

Teachers back in school
Child care providers flock to the classroom in programs that reward them for continuing their education
By Jean Tepperman
After a full day working with preschoolers, Grass Valley Head Start teacher Corrine Watson often heads for her local community college. Taking two courses a semester, she’s set to complete her Associate’s degree in December. What she’s already learned has changed her classroom. For example, she’s created a "writing center" with pencils, paper, chalkboard, and a little desk. "The kids are learning so quickly," she says, "becoming writers. They cut up magazines, write letters for parents and friends, dictate stories we write down." Last January, Watson told the state First Five (Prop. 10) Commis-sion that it was the First Five stipend program that gave her the incentive to go back to school. Her testimony was part of a successful campaign by family child care providers and center staff to extend the CARES program, which has been paying them $500 to $6,000 stipends for taking more courses and staying on the job. The program was due to end in June.
Saving CARES
After its January meeting, the commission was bombarded by more than 3,000 postcards from child care workers urging continuation of the program. The postcard campaign was organized by the newly formed California Child Development Corps, which seeks to improve the quality of care by increasing the education and compensation of child care providers.

Education, Training: Back to school for biology teachers
Biology teachers from across Europe gathered in Germany for the first in a series of EU-backed workshops. Pencils in hand, they learnt more about the latest developments in the life sciences and how to bring them into the classroom school lab. Schools are struggling to reflect and integrate the rapid rate of scientific progress in their science curriculum, partly due to the fact that teachers lack the specific knowledge to do so.
Spearheaded by the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), the initiative will organise a series of nine teacher training workshops in 2003 and 2004, build better links between the teaching and scientific community, as well as develop an online resource bank of teaching materials.
    Knowledge swaps
The teachers also performed hands-on practical experiments using state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques. They discussed ways of translating cutting-edge science into classroom activities and experiments that would spark the interests of aspiring young scientists. Participants wound up the two-day event debating how to promote awareness of the ethical and societal ramifications of modern biology.

Weekly Column Back to School in Missouri Washington - You wouldn’t know summer is ending, but all over Southern Missouri teachers and students are returning to the classrooms.
It is a rite of August that plays out every year. Parents must purchase school supplies from the ever-longer list provided by the school. Filling the shopping basket: Colored pencils which will be used to fill in maps, calculators put to use on complex math problems, and pink erasers to correct the occasional mistake.
Aside from the supplies, there are school clothes to buy, carpools and bus schedules to arrange, and the normal anxiety over going back to school.
And for older students leaving for college, the prospect of saying goodbye, even for a few weeks, is extremely tough on a parent. No matter where our children are off to on the first day of school, sending them is difficult.
We don’t think of our students as going back to work, but that is exactly how it seems to them. Really, they are learning more about themselves than they could ever glean from books. Yet they will never get so much personal good out of a job as they can in a positive learning environment.
In Southern Missouri, creating that environment comes with its own set of challenges. Nationwide, nearly one quarter of America’s public schools are considered rural, and eight million children attend them.

We are going to do WHAT? That used to be the first thing out of my eighth graders mouths when I would explain to them that I was going to take them to the cemetery on an all day long field trip. The moans and groans that you would hear, would make you think that this was a "haunted classroom." But not any more. Now it has become a looked forward to tradition for the students. Older brothers, sisters and friends have told them about the outing. They no longer think that I am the strangest teacher in the world! In fact, now the older classes that have already gone beg for me to take them back. The biggest problems now is administration and parents that ask, "Why study about the cemetery?"
(In my most adult voice, I try to answer.) Going to a local cemetery can have many educational values. One main purpose of this to encourage an appreciation of the unique historical significance of that place. Nearly every community has an old cemetery of historic and educational value. A study of it can reveal much about the lives of people of the past. Once there you can enjoy the wonderful artwork and architecture of the mausoleums.
A cemetery is a quiet place; much contemplation can take place there. One can learn about the philosophy prevailing and their decoration and epitaphs. Gaze upon the monuments and come to understand the staturay and iconography common upon them.

Displaced NY students back in class
NEW YORK (AP) Thousands of youngsters whose schools near the World Trade Center have been closed since the terrorist attacks returned to class Thursday in other neighborhoods, with many comforted that some things are getting back to normal. "I'm so excited to be coming back," said first-grader Caitelin McCoy, who was relocated from Public School 89 in Battery Park City to PS 3 in Greenwich Village. "Now I have a school. I'm not school-less." The 5-year-old is among some 9,000 children from eight lower Manhattan schools who were sent to different schools around town. Thousands of the youngsters watched the terror unfold near their schools last week. Many of the closed schools are being used for the search and recovery effort. "I'm excited to be back," kindergartner Jason Brilliant said. "It was a long time because the World Trade Center went boom."
