Sending Teachers Back to School
An effective, well-orchestrated training program, led by Tri-Electronics, Inc. system facilitators, helped Johnston and his colleagues quickly adapt to the multimedia learning environment. Hobart media center personnel, who serve as system gatekeepers, were the first to learn the system. Though tentative at first, Media Director Dorothy Hausmann, who's been an educator for 32 years, was highly in favor of bringing the new technology into her school. "I was ready to tackle the technology," she said. "The training was very thorough, and I was surprised by how user- friendly the SmartSystem is. In just one week I was able to gain a full understanding of the system's capabilities and how to use it." Other faculty members, trained in small groups, were shown how to bring media programs into their classrooms using the handheld, infrared remote control. They were also taught how to submit lesson plans using the system's scheduling computer.

Science teachers go back to school
Visits to industrial sites and residential study courses at university are on the curriculum for school science teachers in two new programmes designed to enhance their teaching. Science teachers in primary and secondary schools are set to benefit from two programmes being developed at the University of York to enhance science education. The programme has been made possible by a grant from Gatsby Technical Education Projects. Primary school teachers will work with industrial partners to arrange visits by school children to industrial sites. Topics which might be taught with industrial themes include water usage in industry and the properties and uses of plastics. Visits to industrial sites will help the children to understand the application of scientific principles. The project will benefit both teachers and pupils by helping them understand the role of science in industry. The secondary school Science Enhancement Programme will draw upon the links which have been established at the University between the Science Education Group and the departments of Physics, Chemistry and Educational Studies. Teachers on the programme will attend a three week residential study course. The focus will be upon updating teachers' knowledge of their subject, with contributions from external speakers from industry, as well as updating their knowledge of the latest developments in the teaching of science.

In addition to conducting and supporting the lion's share of the world's research on drug abuse and addiction, NIDA works hard to ensure that the results of this research reach key audiences, including educators and the children they teach. In this spirit, September marks the launch of the NIDA Goes Back to School initiative. "We are excited about expanding the resources available to students and teachers on the science behind drug abuse and addiction," says Dr. Nora D. Volkow, Director of NIDA. "Beyond their educational value, our materials hold the promise of sparking students' general interest in the biological sciences as a possible career choice, while meeting teachers' need for engaging curricula that also fulfill national science education objectives." An exciting component of the NIDA Goes Back to School initiative is NIDA for Teens: The Science Behind Drug Abuse, an interactive Web site due to launch as students return to school in September. After doing its homework through focus group testing, NIDA realized it needed a targeted vehicle to reach adolescents ages 11-15. The answer:

August 15, 2001 Remarks by the President to Students and Teachers in Back to School Event
Griegos Elementary School
Albuquerque, New Mexico 12:05 P.M. MDT THE PRESIDENT: Thank you for the warm greeting. It's an honor to be here on the first day of school. I can remember I think I can still remember the excitement I felt when I was the first day of school as a first-grader at Sam Houston Elementary School in Midland, Texas. At least I felt I felt the energy of the kids and I kind of could relate to it. And I want to thank you for giving me a chance to come. I want you to know that the idea of coming here was Heather Wilson's. (Applause.) We were sitting around the Cabinet Room at the right outside the Oval Office, and she said, I understand you're thinking about coming to New Mexico. I said, you bet. I used to spend a lot of time there when I was living in Midland, Texas. I think that's exactly where I intend to go during my stay out of Washington. She said, well, if you come to Albuquerque, you better make sure you go to a school, and I've got a good one in mind. (Applause.) And I said, yes, ma'am. (Laughter.) Here I am. It shows what kind of influence she has as a Congressperson representing the great folks of Albuquerque, New Mexico. And I want to thank Heather for her service and for her recommendation.

Parents go back to school with kids
Program helps immigrants learn English, adjust to culture
Cinthia Brito, 11, works with classmate Tomasa Galeana, 39, during their English class at Thomas Edison Elementary school in California. ANAHEIM, California (AP) At first, Tomasa Galeana got strange looks from her classmates at Thomas Edison Elementary School. Her legs were too long for the short, squat classroom chairs. She didn't play kickball during recess. She wore makeup and carried a purse. These days, though, the 39-year-old student is fitting in just fine, reading the same books and taking the same tests as her 10- and 11-year-old classmates. Galeana has been attending class with her fourth-grade son since January as part of a pilot program aimed at helping newly arrived immigrants learn English and adjust to American schools and culture. "A lot of people are probably afraid to go to school so late in their life," Galeana said. "But I want to learn. I want to learn so I can get a job. I want to learn so I can help my son. I want to learn so I can become a citizen."

Dropping Out of School: Its Benefits and Responsibilities
by Julianne Shepherd
Now that you have
officially enrolled in college, it's time to be honest with yourself. If you feel you are not benefiting from your education in any way, shape or form, you are never too young to take responsibility for your actions. If you really believe you can learn better from living your life outside the constructs of the classroom, then you should simply drop out of school. If you drop out of school, your responsibilities increase, because you're consciously opting out of the most widely accepted system of American socialization. That means you actually have to put forth some effort to make an interesting life, rather than living one that is socially prescribed. Dropping out of school requires the practical application of thought and creativity. Of course, if you are studying a specific trade, such as doctor or lawyer, it might be a better choice for you to remain in school. But if you're any sort of artist (painter, musician, writer, actor, etc.), I'll bet you're in college because either your parents want you to be there, or you have no idea what else to do. So why are you wasting your time? I personally went to college because neither of my parents went, and it was important to them, and I had no idea what else I should be doing. When, after an agonizing year and a half, I told them I was quitting school, their response was, "You'll never have a

How do you contact your child's teacher?
how do you get to speak with your child's teachers? I started calling 3 weeks ago and left messages for specific teachers. This week I started leaving the messages with their department heads, English and Math. I make a point of being positive, we really like the teachers, but we do want to check on our student's progress and materials required in the class. So what has your experience been and what works? Frances (4/00) The question is: how do you get to speak with your child's teachers? I started calling 3 weeks ago and left messages for specific teachers. This week I started leaving the messages with their department heads, English and Math. I make a point of being positive, we really like the teachers, but we do want to check on our student's progress and materials required in the class. Your experience with BHS teachers has been mine. My experience was several years ago and involved several departments. Eventually one Spanish teacher did leave a message about an email address. Sadly, it was his own personal email address. I don't know what the current email address status is. But considering that these teachers all have voicemail, I was astonished at the thundering lack of response. I too resorted to department heads without notable success. I've never seen a less responsive group of teachers with apologies to those teachers who do respond. I haven't interacted with them but I'm sure they're there. Don
