Supply Lists:
Even if your school doesn't allow you to THINK about hammering a nail in the wall, a tool kit is as indispensable as one for the home. Tools need to still be safe and usable, of course, but save money by rounding up some older, less-used items from home or from your friends and family. Hammer, pliers, phillips and slot head screwdrivers (including micro ones for eye glasses), nails, a small assortment of screws, small can of oil or WD-40, work gloves, handful of clothespins, a few rags; you get the idea. This isn't Tool Time, just a back-up supply of essentials.
For office supplies, here's a tip; think medical. Drug companies spend tons of money on junk to give to doctors and their staffs, so if you know someone who works for one, they probably can load you up with sticky notes of all sizes, pens, pencils, clips, note pads, thermometers, clocks and rulers. Also, round up large paper clips or (our favorite) wooden clothespins for clipping stacks of papers together. Stationery should include thank you notes and envelopes for field trip or visiting speaker follow-ups. Back up the required ball of string with fishing line for hanging objects "invisibly".

Foreword by President George W. Bush
As the father of two high school graduates and the husband of a teacher, I've learned many lessons about what makes a school good and an education excellent. The more I see, the more I am convinced of one thing: every child can learn. Great schools do great works in the life of a child, and I have watched it happen. But we must do more. Because I believe every child can learn, I intend to ensure that every child does learn. My Administration put forward a plan called No Child Left Behind based on four principles: accountability for results; local control and flexibility; expanded parental choice; and effective and successful programs. We are pursuing these principles because too many of our schools fail to help every child learn. As our children return to school, we should reflect on how we can improve the schools they attend. It's time to set high standards for what children should know and be able to do, to give our schools the tools they need to help children reach those high standards, and to demand that they reach them. We know that every child can learn; it is time to ensure that every child does learn.

Raising Standards, Lifting Children
Everyone who spends time with children learns a vivid lesson: children tend to perform to meet the expectations of adults. If expectations are low, children can miss their true potential. When expectations are high, progress can be amazing. Teachers should challenge children to read well, do difficult math, and excel in all subjects. Under President Bush's plan, states will set high standards in the core subjects. Well-crafted and thoughtful standards will explain in plain language exactly what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of each grade. Setting clear expectations for what teachers should accomplish each year can prevent misunderstandings and recriminations that arise when teachers, principals, and parents start with different expectations. Standards leave plenty of room for creativity, because they do not dictate teaching practice. In excellent schools, teachers work together to update their lesson plans and their teaching methods to meet the new standards and help their students achieve them.

In this chapter we consider several issues raised with us in the Secretary of State's remit letter, or subsequently on his behalf, and not covered elsewhere in our report. Sabbaticals 146. The Government's original Green Paper proposals included an intention to review the existing opportunities for teachers to take sabbatical leave. It said that experienced and excellent teachers should have opportunities, like those for other professions, to undertake development or research work and enhance their performance. This attracted overwhelming support when views were sought in February last year by the DfEE through a consultative document, Professional development - support for teaching and learning. 147. The DfEE said that it was considering whether to introduce a pilot scheme for sabbaticals which would include the possibility of a teacher's pay for four years being spread over five years. This would provide the opportunity for the fifth year to be taken as a sabbatical and was based on a scheme operating in Ontario, Canada. The rules for that scheme make no mention of what teachers may do with their leave of absence and some have taken other jobs. The DfEE envisaged that its scheme would be for teachers who wanted to build on their experience through further development activities, study or research of value to their schools or future schools, thereby contributing to the improvement in standards through the dissemination of good practice. Teachers would notify in advance the type of activity they would undertake and be expected to provide a report on their return.

June 24, 2003 RELEASE : 03-211 NASA Sends Science And Math Teachers "Back To School" The multimedia event kicks off the innovative program to send science and mathematics teachers "back to school" at NASA field centers. NASA experts and resources will be available during the summer to help educators acquire new teaching resources and technology tools to make learning science, mathematics and technology more appealing to students. As part of the annual National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), hosted by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), NASA Associate Administrator for Education Dr. Adena Williams Loston, joined by astronaut Don Pettit, will announce the first 50 competitively selected NASA Explorer Schools before an expected audience of approximately 1,000 science and technology educators. In a creative school-like setting, Loston will address a "classroom" of NASA officials and partners. Classmates include Pettit, NASA's International Space Station science officer on Expedition 6; NASA Explorer Schools Program architects Peggy L. Steffen and Dr. Shelley Canright; NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Education Programs Dr. Cliff Houston; and representatives from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. National Guard Bureau.

What is the Back to School Program?
The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), a bipartisan organization providing services to state lawmakers, launched the Back to School program to involve state legislators across the country in civic education. The Back to School Program encourages state lawmakers, schedules permitting, to visit classrooms at all levels and talk to students about what it's like to be a legislator: the processes, the pressures, and the debate, negotiation and compromise. Legislators can contribute to the quality of civic education by sharing their experiences and explaining America's tradition of representative democracy to students. The Back to School Program is also an opportunity for legislators to observe what is going on in schools and to let students know that their ideas count. When does Back to School take place?

More Than 10,000 K-12 Teachers in Eight States Participate in Intel Science Research and Technology Training Programs SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 26, 1999 While their students took time off for summer fun, many teachers were hard at work enhancing their skills at Intel Corporation's summer training programs focused on science research and technology. More than 10,000 teachers in eight cities took more than 255,000 hours of training as part of Intel's $3 million 1999 K-12 professional development program. The teachers learned how to build effective science research programs in the classroom and how to integrate technology into their lesson plans. In addition, Intel's U.S. sites implemented programs to address local educational needs, such as working with local school districts and nearby museums. While nine out of ten schools have access to the Internet, a recent Department of Education survey found that only 20 percent of teachers felt capable of using technology in their classrooms. A recent survey sponsored by Bayer Corporation found that many teachers felt less qualified to teach science than other subjects; nearly half said their teacher training course work was only minimally helpful for science teaching.
