Welcome to your one stop site for Back To School! Here you will find free printables, lessons, lists of great Back to School books, resources, and ideas galore! You will see an organized index below. Don't miss a thing! My goal for this Back to School Page is to create a resource that is extremely helpful to new teachers and first year teachers. I also would like this to be a place where veteran or somewhat experienced teachers (that's me - 4 years) can come to find fresh new ideas. Teachers are very generous people, they enjoy sharing their ideas and that is why you will find so much wonderful information here. Some of the things are my ideas, but the vast majority of the ideas come from teachers of various grades and places. I just stuck them on a pretty page and organized them so that we could refer back to them each year. Thank you to the wonderful teachers that have an idea or comment on one of these pages. Please send your ideas to teachingheart@teachingheart.net

Parents go back to school with kids
Program helps immigrants learn English, adjust to culture
Cinthia Brito, 11, works with classmate Tomasa Galeana, 39, during their English class at Thomas Edison Elementary school in California. ANAHEIM, California (AP) At first, Tomasa Galeana got strange looks from her classmates at Thomas Edison Elementary School. Her legs were too long for the short, squat classroom chairs. She didn't play kickball during recess. She wore makeup and carried a purse. These days, though, the 39-year-old student is fitting in just fine, reading the same books and taking the same tests as her 10- and 11-year-old classmates. Galeana has been attending class with her fourth-grade son since January as part of a pilot program aimed at helping newly arrived immigrants learn English and adjust to American schools and culture. "A lot of people are probably afraid to go to school so late in their life," Galeana said. "But I want to learn. I want to learn so I can get a job. I want to learn so I can help my son. I want to learn so I can become a citizen."

    http://kidshealth.org/kid/grow/school_stuff/back_to_school.html
KidsHealth Kids Growing Up School Stuff
Oh no - it's school time again! Lots of kids feel nervous or even scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. You can beat the back-to-school blues by knowing what to expect. The First Day
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the cool stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. And of course, lots of teachers go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention to this part to find out whether you'll have to raise your hand to ask a question or if it's not OK to chew gum in class! Kids in older grades probably will know more people in their classes on the first day. But even if you've already met the kids sitting next to you, remember that it's a new year and that first impressions can last. Try to say hello to both kids you know and kids who are new in your class, and be friendly. Everyone's a little nervous or excited, so make the first move - you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friend! Fifth or sixth grade can signal a move to middle school or junior high, where you'll find lockers, homeroom (this is just what it sounds like - a classroom you'll go to each morning, kind of like your "home" in the school), and moving from classroom to classroom for each subject. Your teachers know that this is a big change from elementary school and will help you adjust.

    18. Back To School

"Huh? What? Is that my alarm? What time is it - 6:00 AM? Ugggh. Will somebody shut that off! Now I remember. It's the first day of school . . . I think I'm going to be sick," you mutter to yourself. After a summer of sleeping in, that first day of school may not be your idea of a good time. Whether you're an anxious new freshman or a confident returning senior, heading back to school signals a time of transition: new classes, new teachers, new schedules, and a new social scene. People say that school can be the best time of your life, but fear it, dread it, or love it, you gotta go. Here are some ways to make the time a little easier. First Day Jitters
There's no escaping the fact that the first day of school can be crazy! New kids wander around in circles. Lockers won't open. The school nurse needs your medical records. You forgot your gym shorts. Freshmen are running in all directions, looking for their homerooms. How can you combat first-day chaos? If you're headed to a new school, try to arrange a visit the week before classes begin. Explore any areas that are of particular interest, such as the gymnasium, library, or science labs. Some schools offer maps - get one and give it a read before school starts. Your first day is also the time to bring in school supplies and paperwork. Don't forget those forms mailed to your family over the summer: immunization (shot) records, permission slips, and class schedules. Did your school send a list of supplies? If so, bring them all with you the first day. If not, it's still a good idea to pack the basics: notebooks, pencils, pens, and a calculator.

“School days, school days . . . dear, old golden rule days” Everyone remembers the excitement and agony of leaving summer behind, and returning to school. August is the month when our nation’s students get ready to go back to school after taking their summer break. This fall 2003, it’s anticipated that a record number of students will enroll in school – over 73 million – at all levels, from nursery school through college. They will be joined by 6.5 million teachers who will be going back to work, as well. This multimedia Web page contains digital files in various media for broadcasters and journalists who are working on stories about students, parents and teachers, as well as schools in their communities.
