The Basics of Safety Networks What is CIP Safety? Click image to enlarge. The CIP Safety protocol provides fail-safe communication between nodes such as safety I/O blocks, safety interlock switches, safety laser scanners and safety PLCs in safety applications up to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3) according to IEC 61508 standards. What makes a safety network safe? Similar to its everyday counterpart, a safety network is a fieldbus system that connects devices on the factory floor. But unlike standard networks, a safety network is designed to trap errors and react with pre-determined safe operation. The protocol inherent in a safety network takes measures to ensure a high level of integrity within the application. These measures, such as message redundancy and cross checking, ensure that safety messages are reliably transmitted from one device and received at another in a predetermined time and with the integrity of the data content maintained.

Back-To-School Safety Checklist
When you drop off your child at school, use this checklist to make sure these hidden hazards aren't waiting to cause injury or death.
  • Drawstrings on Jackets and Sweatshirts There should be no drawstrings on hoods or around the neck. Drawstrings at the waist or bottom of jackets should extend no more than 3 inches to prevent catching in car and school bus doors or getting caught on playground equipment.
  • Loops on Window Blind Cords Cut the loop and attach separate tassels to prevent entanglement and strangulation in window blind cords. One child a month strangles and dies in the loop of a window blind pull cord or inner cord. Keep cords out of childrens' reach. Install cord stops to prevent formation of loop in inner cord.
  • Bike Helmets Buy a helmet that meets one of the safety standards (U.S. CPSC, Snell, ANSI, ASTM, or Canadian), and insist that your children wear the helmet each time they ride their bike. About 900 people, including more than 200 children, are killed annually in bicycle-related incidents, and about 60 percent of these deaths involve a head injury. More than 500,000 people are treated annually in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. Research indicates that a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent.

The following tips will help ensure your child consumes a safe and nutritious school lunch.
    Preparation
    - When preparing your child's lunch, be sure to use food that has been stored and packed properly. Follow good preparation practices; anyone preparing a lunch should be sure to wash hands often, use clean utensils and cutting boards, and wash preparation surfaces to help reduce the risk of contamination by harmful bacteria. Also, avoid cross contamination; do not use the same utensils for raw meats and other products. In addition, when preparing a lunch at night, be sure to refrigerate items such as tuna, cold cuts, egg salad, and any type of dairy products. Consult food labels to make sure foods are stored at the proper temperature. Consumption at School - When lunches contain perishable items, parents should instruct children to refrigerate lunches at school. Since most schools do not provide refrigeration, insulated lunch boxes and freezer gel packs can be used where necessary. Be sure to seal thermoses properly. Make sure that your children know that foods that have not been stored properly, that smell or taste odd, or that are not sealed correctly should be thrown away. Keep in mind that foods such as peanut butter, box juices, and raisins, are particularly useful for field trips or traveling because refrigeration is not required. Children also should wash their hands before eating their lunch. This will reduce the risk of contamination by harmful bacteria. Finally, remember caution should be used when sharing lunches with other children; allergic reactions to certain food items or ingredients are possible.

BACK TO SCHOOL TIME BRINGS INCREASED ENFORCEMENT
THP MAKES EXTRA EFFORT TO KEEP KIDS SAFE
School children across the state are returning to the classroom, and the Tennessee Department of Safety is doing all it can to ensure those children get to and from school safely. The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division will be using a variety of methods to ensure school bus safety – including monitoring school zones, and periodically placing troopers on school buses to find out first-hand what types of enforcement actions are needed. “Thousands of children board school buses every day, and making sure they are transported safely is one of our highest priorities,” said Department of Safety Commissioner Fred Phillips. “We will do everything we can do to protect them.” Troopers will be concentrating on reducing speed in school zones, and making sure motorists follow the law that requires them to stop their vehicles when meeting or coming up behind a bus while passengers are getting on or off. To accomplish this, troopers will be working school zones in the mornings and afternoons, and the THP will randomly place troopers on school buses, especially in areas where there have been a large number of violators reported.

Help protect yourself and your new driver by mounting our removable Learning to Drive sign to the back of your vehicle or place it inside the back window.
    http://www.newdriversafety.com
Let's face it, auto accidents can happen anywhere at any time. The probability of an accident is even greater when there is a new driver at the wheel. Help protect yourself and your new driver by mounting a " Learning to Drive " sign available from New Driver Safety Signs to the back of your car. Now, with a quick glance, other drivers on the road will recognize that there is an inexperienced driver at the wheel of your car.
Armed with this knowledge your fellow drivers can make the right decision to allow a greater distance between their car and yours allowing them time to react to unexpected or sudden movements that inexperienced drivers invariably make. You, in turn, can feel better about your teaching experience knowing that you are providing the drivers around you with important information about who's behind the wheel of your car.
Anyone teaching a new driver to drive, be it a teenager or a friend, can use our signs to help alert fellow drivers. Our ultra-removable adhesive signs attach easily to the back of your car and our window signs attach easily to the inside of your back window. All of our signs can be easily removed for the times that your vehicle is not being used by your new driver.
