School Safety Initiative
"Safe Schools are a priority for us all," says Chi McBride, star of the FOX hit series "Boston Public." The American Red Cross is kicking off its School Safety Initiative, helping schools prevent, prepare for and respond to violent incidents, natural disasters and other emergencies. The initiative supports current school curricula. It targets school-aged children between the ages of five to 18 years old and includes training in first aid and CPR, disaster preparedness, leadership training and tolerance education. "It doesn't matter whether you have a child or not, this is a community issue and we all have a responsibility to help ensure all children have a safe environment in which to learn," says McBride. Building a Better Future Through Prevention, Preparedness and Response.
The Red Cross offers students, school staff, administrators and family members help in three areas.

If someone is hurt or equipment is broken, these statements cannot undo the harm. Horse-play will not be tolerated. If it occurs, those involved will be disqualified from the lab and given a zero for the assignment. Lack of pre-lab preparation is the main threat to safety in our lab. If you and your group are unprepared, you will be unsure of yourself, waist time, and have a good chance of making a mistake that leads to a problem. At the beginning of each lab period , you will be given a chance to ask questions. If you are unsure of some procedure, now is the time to ask. Always pay close attention to any verbal instructions given at this time.

Shootings Make School Safety a Hot Topic
by Rosy McGillan There was a time when going back to school meant the excitement of seeing friends again and shopping for new clothes and the latest “must-have” school supplies. But recent school shootings in Colorado, Oregon, Georgia, Arkansas and a host of other states has changed all that. Now fearsome parents prepare by reading up on school safety and violent behavior while school officials and police ponder ways to prevent trouble. The Internet can provide valuable information about violence prevention to parents, journalists and researchers. Type in “school safety” on any search engine, and you’ll pull up droves of links that could take hours to sift through. But a number of professional groups have already done much of the sifting, and posted their findings on the Web. One of them is the National School Boards Association, which represents the elected and appointed school boards which actually run the school systems in localities across America. Their website is at: http://www.nsba.org

    WELCOME BACK!
Now that everyone is pretty much settled into the new school year, let us in the Edmonton region officially say welcome back to another year of patrolling and keeping children safe in crosswalks around our schools. First off, we would like to thank all the students who attended the AMA School Safety Patrol Workshops in July. Approximately 170 students from around the region graduated from the three-day program. Some highlights definitely were the many visits from the Edmonton Police Service. The presence of the Edmonton Police Service was one of the notable highlights of the workshops. Our "Back to School" kick off was held on September 5 th at Lymburn Elementary School in west Edmonton. The staff and students of Lymburn welcomed the AMA, our traffic safety partners and the media. Our "slow-down" campaign was a huge success; again thanks to the awesome students and staff at Lymburn school. As well, we would like to thank our traffic safety partners for their continued support of the program:

BACK-TO-SCHOOL CHECKLIST Children aren't concerned whether their new backpacks could lead to chronic neck and back problems later in life or what safety rules to follow on their way to and from school. It's up to you to keep them safe and healthy. Follow these smart strategies to head off common school-related health and safety problems. Learn your school's medication policies It is important to know your school's rules about handling and distributing medicine before the school year starts, in the event your child is well enough to go to school but needs to take medication during school hours. Talk to the nurse or person in charge of administering medication at your school and give them information in writing, including the name of the drug, reason for the medication, dosage, times when it should be taken, possible side effects, prescribing physician's name and telephone number, and emergency contact information. Deliver the medication yourself, in its original container, to the appropriate official. "Your child needs to be clear on the medication instructions as well, so he or she knows things are being done properly," says Wyndolyn Bell, M.D., secretary of the Georgia chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Your child also should be aware that sharing prescription or over-the-counter medication with another student could lead to an accidental overdose, as well as suspension or expulsion from school.

Back to School - Back to Safety
Safety Precautions from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons For Immediate Release: August 23, 2001 ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Parents across the country are heading out for the best deals on backpacks, notepads and pencils, but these are not the only back-to-school supplies that kids will need. Helmets, knee pads and wrist guards could be the most important gear for children who ride their bicycles or skate to school. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reminds parents that children need proper safety equipment for an injury-free commute to and from school.
"There's always lots of excitement when a new school year begins, but parents may not think to check safety gear for their children who ride bikes or rollerblade to school," says ASPS President Walter Erhardt, MD. "All year plastic surgeons treat children injured in bicycle or skating collisions. Proper helmet and wrist guard use minimizes soft-tissue injuries of the face and hands such as bruises, scrapes and cuts."
Dr. Erhardt reminds parents that while these common mishaps may seem insignificant, particular concern should be given to injuries on the face where the potential for scarring and nerve damage exists. It is important that a surgeon qualified to repair the face and all areas of the body treat the injuries.
