Time for School Lunches
Peter Erickson likes tuna salad without the bread. Mom packs it in a lunch along with chocolate cookies, a peach, rolls and a special note from her. (Photo courtesy of Linda McConnell, Rocky Mountain News
by Marty Meitus
Scripps Howard News Service How did this happen? One minute we're all enjoying summer, and the next minute it's back to school. You know what that means: It's time once again to start packing the dreaded lunch. But, said Karen Erickson, a Denver home economist and mother of four, with a little imagination, packing lunch can be more pleasure than chronic pain. "To make it interesting for me, I try to come up with something fun and balanced," she said. The payoff can be huge. "It's fun when Peter comes home from school and says, 'Wow,' or 'Mom, I really liked the tuna without the bread.' That makes me feel like it's worthwhile."

Back to School
Back to school is not only one of my favorite themes, it's also my favorite time of year. Everything is shiny and new, and everyone is excited about starting a new year. My Back to School Unit is a mixture of several themes that I use over the first few weeks. Whether I'm teaching kindergarten, first grade, or a multi-age class, I begin my year the same, and each child participates at his or her personal level, which is what I always expect of all my students, regardless of their age or grade. During the first two weeks, I incorporate materials from the following themes: Apples

Family Lunch Box Related Links Category : Advice By David Scott Send to a Friend Printer Friendly Send Me Responses (Beta) "What do you mean you don't want to eat it? It's food, isn't it?" That quote is from a 6-year-old to his sister, who was 9, from many years ago—just the way my mother remembered it. I suggest it demonstrates that some children are fussy about their food, others are extremely fussy and many will happily eat whatever is put in front of them. It's a fact of childhood. Dealing with the differences from child to child is a fact of parenthood.  And the eating problem is particularly concerning when it comes to carry-along lunches that many parents send to school with their youngsters every day.

Franklin said it would be hard for some students to give up candy, soda and donuts. Hahn-Smith said the committee wanted feedback from the students - especially what food items they liked. Franklin said students took a survey in class and had ideas of their own including a soda- and coffee-free week where peer pressure might work to break students of the all-day soda and coffee drinking." TEACHER DESCRIBES WHAT BRITISH KIDS ARE EATING "The canteens of secondary schools are depressingly similar. They all serve huge portions of junk food. I estimate that a typical child consumes more than 2,000 calories during the school day. The calories come in the form of chocolate muffins and fizzy drinks bought from the school canteen, and in chocolate bars and crisps sold in the school vending machines. In the canteen at lunch-time, I watch tables of children stuffing themselves with burgers, chips and enormous bars of chocolate. The drinks sold are overwhelmingly brightly coloured, additive-laden bottles of pop, and children often buy two at a time. On my way to the staff room, I see children queuing at the vending machine buy their "king size" chocolate bars and "extra large" packets of crisps. No wonder childhood obesity is soaring."

FEEDING KIDS
For Parents, Educators, and Health Professionals by Connie Evers, MS,RD Issue XIV, September/October 1997 IN THIS ISSUE: * Nutrition for Children Website * BACK TO SCHOOL: What's for lunch? * FOR KIDS ONLY: 10 Quick Tips for Active Teens! * MOM'S CORNER: Growing Gardens and Children NUTRITION FOR CHILDREN WEBSITE I have had a *wonderful* response so far to the "Nutrition for Children" website. The contents are updated WEEKLY so be sure to bookmark (or "fav") it and visit often. The site includes a "Weekly Carrot" which is a brief tidbit of nutrition information that you can print on menus or use as a filler in your own publications. You can also read back issues of the "Feeding Kids" newsletter and enter your subscription for the email version. Consumers, students, educators and health professionals can "Ask Connie" a question about child nutrition. There is also a links page, an update on how my leader/activity guide is coming along and information/ordering options for my book, "How to Teach Nutrition to Kids." There is still a small supply of slightly damaged "hurt" books that are available for half price to schools. If you know of a nutrition site of interest to children, educators, parents, and/or health professionals please drop me a line and I will consider it for my links page (reciprocal links appreciated too!).
