Break out the brown bags and Hercules lunch boxes, the kids are heading back to school. Packing healthful lunches for your pride and joy needn't be a hassle. A few simple, yet make your job easier while getting the kids involved in the lunch-making process. They'll also learn the importance good food is to good healthand good fun. Pack the Pyramid Boosting the quaky of the brown-bag lunch is easy if you "pack the Pyramid." All you have to do is follow the nutrition guidelines shown in the Food Guide Pyramid for Kids, below. The chart was developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to guide you to the foods which supply the key nutrients for growing children. The secret to building a successful Pyramid-based lunch is the same as for building any important structure: start with a strong base. Select one or more foods from each of the three bottom levels of the Pyramidgrains; fruits and vegetables; and meat, beans, and dairy products-to have a solid nutritional base and earn an "A+" in balanced brown-bag nutrition.

The Secrets to Warding Off Weight Gain! Weight gain is a serious health concern. Americans gain an average of 2 pounds each year. At this rate, a 20-year old woman who weighs 135 pounds would weigh 175 pounds by the time she hits the age of 40. Researchers at the University of Colorado believe that they have the secret to warding weight gain. They propose cutting total caloric intake by 100 calories per day. In the United States almost 65 percent of adults are overweight; 31 percent of those are obese. The Colorado researchers determined that while biology was once blamed for obesity, today it appears that environment may be the culprit. They found that driving the obesity epidemic is the variety of easily available, high calorie fast and processed foods, coupled with an increase in the number of hours people work. These circumstances seem to lead even the most health conscious person to consume extra calories from unhealthy food choices. One way to begin cutting 100 calories a day is to look at your eating habits. This will allow you to see where the extra 100 calories are sneaking in, and then you can consciously make changes. Researchers have identified 5 key eating habits that alone or in combination can lead to weight gain.

The Dragon, an original design, flies "true and fast" and is "the best plane to hit your teacher with." The Helicopter is popular because it is both simple to make and simple to fly. You can peruse the rest of the planes by difficulty of construction (easy, medium, hard) or jump right to the fastest, longest flying, or most unusual designs.

The suggested retail price is $2.89 for a package of six. Ideas for school lunches At many schools, lunch boxes are not refrigerated from morning until lunchtime. That makes food safety every bit as important as nutrition, so it's a good idea to pack foods in insulated lunch boxes. Use a thermos for hot and cold items, freeze juice boxes and milk to pack alongside sandwiches and even throw in refreezable ice packs. Here are some lunch box ideas that require no refrigeration: • Mozzarella string cheese with a muffin. • Bagel with raisins. • Tortilla rolled up or pita stuffed with mild cheese and shredded veggies. • Banana bread spread with peanut butter

Food Safety 101
News Canada (NC)—Bagged lunches are healthy, economical and nutritious. But they also pose the threat of hosting harmful bacteria, unless food is handled and packed properly. Use the following tips as your study guide for "Food Safety 101":
• Spill-proof, seal-able bags are a must for transporting and storing food safely. Stock up on these items to keep leftovers ready for the lunch box.
• Preparing lunch the night before is a great time-saver. Store lunches safely in the refrigerator overnight.
• Prepare a clean surface for lunch packing. Wash your hands, utensils and counter with hot, soapy water to destroy bacteria.
• Sandwiches are a popular lunchtime staple: look for lunchmeat with a reputable brand name to ensure food safety. Maple Leaf, for instance, has made food safety a top priority and is committed to providing customers with the highest standards of food safety assurance.
• Consider using an insulated travel bottle. It will keep leftover soup, chili or stew safe and hot until you're ready to enjoy it.

BACK School Lunches
Pack the best of both worlds flavor and nutrition.
By Nancy Ross Ryan
School lunches may sometimes be a headache but they need never be boring. And your school-age kids will say thanks for the memories of terrific, exciting, surprising lunches both delicious and nutritious. With the Food Pyramid as a guide, creativity as a muse and wholesome convenience products as labor-saving devices, you'll be a hero (and we don't mean sandwich). Not your ordinary sandwich
Because sandwiches take center stage in the school lunchbox, all the more reason to make them more than S.O.S. (Same Old Sandwich). The sandwich offers the perfect opportunity to supply at least two servings from the bottom and biggest level of the Food Pyramid: the grains group. Think sandwich bread not just in white, but rye, whole wheat, multigrain, pumpernickel, sourdough, cinnamon-raisin and more. Beyond sliced bread there are Kaiser rolls, onion rolls, baguettes, whole-wheat hamburger and hot dog buns, rye buns and English muffins. Halved bagels and bialys make fine sandwiches. So does split focaccia. Pitas are perfect for stuffing, and flat breads such as lavash and flour tortillas make great wraps. The sandwich is also a wonderful way to add a serving from other levels of the pyramid: the fruit, vegetable and dairy groups, and the protein group that includes meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dry beans and nuts. A few sandwich ideas:
Stuff tuna or egg salad in a pita pocket with sliced seedless cucumber or lettuce.

This is often a stressful and expensive time of year, especially for those of us living on one income. There are some simple ways to save money this school year, though. Consider packing a sack lunch, for instance. Depending on the price of hot lunches in your area, this could be a real money saver for your family. Our readers have supplied some of their money-saving tips for back to school, as well as some sack lunch ideas. Money Saving Tips: From Susan: It seemed my Middle School son always wanted to have brand named "cool" clothes. I put him on his own budget for back to school clothes for the entire year. I shopped with him and he found "cool" sneakers on sale, some very hip brand name shirts. The budget includes underwear and socks also. He hasn't lost any socks in the wash. He is learning the value of a $ and is much more responsible for his things. Miracles do happen! I am going to try an amended version with my 10 year old daughter. From "Fly":

A BOX OF DELIGHTS
Do the shelves of the toy department leave you uninspired? Are you tired of having your toy purchases dictated by the advertising on Saturday morning T.V.? Are you spending more for toys but finding your kids are enjoying them less? Then the time is ripe for you to create your own "box of delights". The possibilities for a unique and special gift are endless, bounded only by your imagination. In this article we will outline ideas for grouping toys, books and other items together to make delightful gifts that will fit any budget, big or small. Most of us begin our shopping for the right gift at the nearest toy store or book shop, but your search doesn't have to end there. Don't forget to visit specialty shops, gift stores, stationers, kitchen centres, hobby shops, hardware stores, museum gift shops, sewing centres, Scout and Guide shops, costumers, record stores, sports stores and art shops. Be on the look-out for gifts and neat stuff all year round, and keep a cache of interesting items on hand for little gifts to brighten a dreary day or to form part of a major birthday or Christmas present. Combine a number of small items in an inexpensive tote bag, basket or cardboard box. Remember that children love all kinds of boxes and containers, and look for one that suits the character of the gift: a tackle box for a fishing set, a plastic food saver for a set of baking items, a multi-drawer plastic case for a craft set or back-to-school present, a plastic attache case for any kind of collection.

[Newsletter Homepage] Washington Township PTA Sept. 15, 2000 Last Issue [Next Issue] Dear Parents and Teachers,
Welcome back to school students, staff and parents! I hope everyone is ready for a new year of education and fun. I'm guessing everyone said yes to fun! The PTA has added a new committee this year called Family Events and they will be working hard to plan events that include the whole family. If anyone has an idea that they think will work, please call me I'd love to hear from you. As many of you know, the fall fund-raiser, of wrapping paper and candy is our most important fund raising event of the year. The profits from this event funds 90% of our annual expenses. At Back-to-School Night we will have a general PTA meeting where we will review the entire budget. Refreshments will be provided. Please try to attend.
Sincerely,
Michele Georgia, PTA President
PTA BOWLING LEAGUE
The PTA bowling league meets every Tuesday at 9:00 at Oakwood Lanes. You do not have to be a good bowler to join. All you need is a desire to meet people and have fun. Every year we donate to the schools a "wish list" item that would not ordinarily be purchased due to lack of funds. Come on out and give it a try.
