Osteopathic medicine and back pain
Osteopathic Physicians, also known as Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine or Doctors of Osteopathy ( D.O.), diagnose and treat all illnesses and injuries and many specialize in treating back pain. The distinguishing characteristics of osteopathic medicine include its focus on treating the whole body (as opposed to specific symptoms or illnesses) and its focus on the musculoskeletal system as one of the key elements to overall health and wellbeing. Conservative (non-surgical) treatment commonly includes osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT), medications and all other accepted therapies when needed.

Introduction to MRI scans
Physicians usually have a good idea of what they are looking for on the MRI scan before one is performed. The scans are most commonly used for pre-surgical planning, such as for a decompression or a lumbar spinal fusion. MRI scans are extremely sensitive to picking up information about the health of the discs, as well as the presence of any tumors or a lumbar disc herniation ( see figure 1 ) pinching the nerve roots and causing back pain.

Study finds ways to reduce cost of treating back pain
ATLANTA (CNN) Changing the medical treatments for lower back pain less bed rest, for example can reduce expenditures for one of the most costly and widespread ailments in the United States, according to a study reported Thursday. Lower back pain may affect half of all Americans at least part of the time, scientists have estimated, with costs projected to $100 billion annually half of which goes for direct medical care with much of it considered ineffective.

Other non-narcotic pain medications (e.g. Ultram
There is a new type of non-narcotic oral pain medication that can be prescribed to treat low back pain. Tramadol (Ultram) acts centrally (in the brain) to modulate the sensation of pain and has no anti-inflammatory effect. It is a stronger pain reliever than acetaminophen, but probably not as strong as the narcotic agents. Ultram is often a good option for treatment of low back pain because patients do not build up a tolerance with extended usage and there is a very low incidence of addiction. This new medication is still quite expensive and is not covered by some health plans because of the expense. The regularly prescribed dose is one to two 50mg tablets every four to six hours, not to exceed eight pills a day. Exceeding the prescribed dose may lead to respiratory depression or seizures.

UICC GLOBAL ink
The International Tobacco-Control Network Selected documents
NEIL FRANCEY Barrister- at-Law Sydney, Australia Tobacco Control is essentially a public response to a social issue. The public policy underpinning that response can be influenced by the reality of the social issue involved and the perception of the social issue involved. The perception of the need for tobacco control, and therefore the public policy response, however, has been distorted by decades of manipulation by the international tobacco industry. The deceit of the tobacco industry is now being exposed, largely through public inquires and litigation. As a consequence, the public policy response to the tobacco issue is increasingly being recognised as urgent and important and is increasingly more reflective of the real underlying social issue involved. The WHO FCTC is an example at the pan-global level. This APACT conference is an illustration at the regional-international level. Inevitably, however, policies must be implemented on a country by country basis. Just as trans-national tobacco companies have operated at an international, regional and national level to distort the truth and impede tobacco control, their efforts need to be exposed at all levels in order to ensure that their conduct does not continue to influence tobacco control efforts, and so that the tobacco industry can be made accountable for its actions. Litigation and public inquiries can assist to this end and there are numerous examples, illustrations and suggestions for future action, including:

Volume 7 Issue 2 An Overview Of Hydrotherapy
Introduction

The Millennium Spa Project
Introduction
Hydrotherapy is often associated with healing, and there's a revived European interest in mineral and thermal cures this year. People in the United States may not be as receptive because the health benefits aren't as well-recognized or widely accepted. For example, use of the term "medical spa" is redundant to Europeans who consider spas to be medical settings, and in Germany, health insurance covers health resort visits and treatments. Information presented in a talk at the November 2003 Medical Spa Conference described various applications and results of hydrotherapy. In general, the term refers to any and all modalities involving water treatments that are used externally. Water pressure is a natural stimulus that can be combined with temperature to implement specific changes. Heat increases oxygenation and the heart rate, while cold constricts vessels to reduce edema or create a sedative effect. Using water to heat the skin brings blood to the surface, while cooling does just the opposite. Tangible benefits can include immune system stimulation, release of endorphins to increase the sense of well-being, and relief from muscle tension or stress.

The skeletal trunk that part of the body made up of the spine (back and neck), shoulders, and pelvis acts as the major support system for the rest of the body. Sometimes called the trunk or the torso, the skeletal trunk is home to weight-bearing bones and joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerve centers that make movement possible and allow flexibility for the rest of the body. Because of the complexity of its many tasks, the skeletal trunk is vulnerable to many disorders. Problems such as degenerative arthritis, nerve impingement, fractures, tumors disorders that can also cause pain and disability in other parts of the body are common to the skeletal trunk.
