America take for granted they are going back to school. were forced to quit theirjobs, leave school and stay and they were barred from receiving health care
http://hutchison.senate.gov/afghan2.htm
Austin American-Statesman
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison
March 22, 2002 IT'S BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME IN AFGHANISTAN On Saturday, children in Afghanistan will do something that most kids in America take for granted they are going back to school. Because the U.S. military helped defeat the oppressive Taliban regime last fall, the people of Afghanistan have been faced with the daunting task of rebuilding their country. One of its top priorities has been to reopen the doors of the nation's schools. Before the Taliban took control, schools in Afghanistan were open to both boys and girls. Women were given opportunities to pursue higher education and professional careers. More than 70 percent of Afghan teachers, 40 percent of physicians and 50 percent of the civil service corps were female. But under Taliban rule, women were prohibited from receiving any education. Women were forced to quit their jobs, leave school and stay in their homes. They could not even be seen in public without a male escort, and they were barred from receiving health care. They were denied basic human rights. The effect on the nation's children was devastating. Schools were shut down, and many children were forced to spend their time on the streets.

Many Idaho families are not aware that their children may qualify for CHIP coverage. Last year, an estimated 29,600 uninsured Idaho children under 19 years were eligible but still had not applied for CHIP (Urban Institute, 2002). Many of these eligible children and their families are located in rural areas of Idaho and are unaware of CHIP and the state’s 2003 income eligibility guidelines. For instance, a family of four may earn up to $27,600 annually and qualify their children (up to 19 years old) for CHIP. The comprehensive coverage offered through CHIP helps keep Idaho’s kids healthy. The CKFI Coalition encourages parents to find out if their kids are eligible by calling 211 or 1-877-KIDS-NOW for more information or to be sent the three-page CHIP application form.
Article by Mary Lou Kinney, the state CKFI Project Director. She works closely with the statewide CKFI Coalition and three local CKFI Projects and their local CKFI Coalitions to promote access for eligible Idaho children to the state child health insurance program (CHIP).

KidsHealth Kids Growing Up School Stuff
Oh no - it's school time again! Lots of kids feel nervous or even scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. You can beat the back-to-school blues by knowing what to expect. The First Day
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the cool stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. And of course, lots of teachers go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention to this part to find out whether you'll have to raise your hand to ask a question or if it's not OK to chew gum in class! Kids in older grades probably will know more people in their classes on the first day. But even if you've already met the kids sitting next to you, remember that it's a new year and that first impressions can last. Try to say hello to both kids you know and kids who are new in your class, and be friendly. Everyone's a little nervous or excited, so make the first move - you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friend! Fifth or sixth grade can signal a move to middle school or junior high, where you'll find lockers, homeroom (this is just what it sounds like - a classroom you'll go to each morning, kind of like your "home" in the school), and moving from classroom to classroom for each subject. Your teachers know that this is a big change from elementary school and will help you adjust.

Back pain
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
January, 2003. Revised June 2003. Download this factsheet Back pain is an extremely common complaint –an estimated 60 to 80% of people in the UK are affected at some time in their lives. It’s also one of the main reasons for sickness absence. Each year, close to 120 million working days are lost due to back pain.
Acute and chronic back pain
Back pain can strike anyone at any age, although studies show people are most vulnerable between the ages of 45 and 59. If the pain lasts for less than three months, it is called acute back pain, where acute refers to the duration rather than the severity of the symptoms. If the problem goes on for longer, this is known as chronic back pain.
How the back works
The spine is made up of many small bones called vertebrae. These are separated by discs, which allow the spine to bend (see illustration below). This structure of vertebrae and discs is supported along its length by muscles and ligaments. The spinal cord threads through the centre of each vertebra, carrying nerves from the brain to the rest of the body.

Exercise for back pain
Active therapies (exercises) are typically necessary to rehabilitate the spine and help alleviate pain. Importantly, a regular exercise routine provides patients with the means to help avoid recurrences of low back pain, and helps reduce severity and duration of potential future episodes of low back pain. Stretching
A hamstring stretching routine should include applying pressure to lengthen the hamstring muscle for 30-45 seconds at a time, one to two times each day. The pressure on the muscle should be applied evenly and bouncing should be avoided, since a bouncing motion will trigger a spasm response in the muscle being stretched. The hamstring muscle may be stretched in a number of different ways. Options for hamstring stretching, listed from most difficult to least difficult, include:

Parents and early childhood professionals share a role in making chil-dren feel safe and secure as they move to new educational settings. Of course, such milestones in children's lives can cause anxiety, too. Strengthening the ties between programs and families will help create smooth transitions for adults and children both.
How parents can help:
  • Be enthusiastic about the upcoming change. If you are excited and confident, your child will be, too. Prepare yourself. Take note of how your child reacts to separation. If possible, visit the new setting with your child. Introduce your child to the new teacher or early childhood professional in advance. Arrange a playdate with another child from the program, preferably one-on-one, so that your child will see a familiar face when she walks in.
