Bensy and Benson are delighted to return to school "People look at my children with hatred. But it's not their fault - their father made the mistake."
GeeVarghese John is watching his grandchildren - Benson, 7, and Bensy, 9 - strap their satchels to their backs before the daily trek to school in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Although school is only two kilometres from home, half an hour's journey on foot, it has taken the pair a full two years to get there. The children are HIV positive and getting into school has not been an easy journey. As they see the children off to school, John and his wife, Shalini Kutty, tell me their story. 'He infected her' Since their daughter and her husband died they have been the main carers for the children. When they went looking for a groom for their young and beautiful daughter, Mary John, they didn't know much about K C Chandy.

Lighten Their Load for Back-to-School 20 January 2004 Many adults know the anguish that back pain can bring.
A 'bad back' is often considered to be a complaint of older people, but many people don't consider the risk to a child's back, especially through carrying a heavy school bag.
As the spine is growing and developing it is vitally important to address spinal health issues for a number of reasons.
Firstly, to prevent spinal stress and dysfunction that causes pain, which may affect study and participation in sport and recreation.
Secondly, to develop good techniques for spinal health that will carry through into adulthood.
Ensuring that your child is carrying a safe load to and from school is a good way to begin addressing their spinal health. Remind your kids that a back injury can impact their health and well-being for years to come, so it is important to take care.

Eating healthy is important since it provides the necessary vitamins and minerals your child needs to function properly all day. Help refuel their tanks with three balanced meals a day and healthy snacks for mid- morning and afternoon breaks.
Chores are actually a good way to teach your children responsibility and how to take care of themselves. Have them set the table, take out the trash, and even sort their own laundry. Not only will this help them out, it will make your maintenance work easier!
Although these are just a few examples of what it takes to get your child in gear for school, sometimes the most obvious tasks are overlooked. Use this as a checklist to reduce your back-to-school stress, and to keep your child on the road to success.

Issue Date: August 31, 2003 HEALTH BRIEFS Back-to-School Health Briefs Playgrounds: Safer sun
Outdoor activity not only helps combat childhood obesity a growing problem in America it's also just plain fun. But adults need to protect kids from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. It helps to apply sunscreen in the morning and before play time. A more permanent solution, already used in some areas of the sunny Southwest, is to cover school playgrounds with a fabric canopy to filter 81% to 95% of the rays. Although canopies cost $10,000 to $15,000 to cover a large playground and require labor to put up (and take down before snow or windstorms), they work well in shade-poor areas or where trees won't grow. Computers: Wrist risk low
Sorry, kids. You can't use fear of carpal tunnel syndrome to escape homework. Although previous studies flip-flopped on whether computers are linked to carpal tunnel syndrome, an authoritatively large Danish study has found that typing on a keyboard does not raise the risk of getting that painful wrist condition. But using a mouse for more than 20 hours a week does carry a slight risk.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Easing back-to-school jitters
CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta (CNN) School already has begun in some parts of the country, while it's a few days away elsewhere. Most children aren't too thrilled about having to hit the books, and school even can be a source of anxiety for some. What can parents do to help ease the back-to-school transition? CNN's medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, offered a few tips Monday. GUPTA: [Going back to school] can be an anxiety-provoking time. No question about it, and especially 5- to 7-year-olds and 11- to 14-year-olds. Those kids are likely to call in sick the first couple of days in part because [of] a new day of school. Also in part because it's usually a new school in those age groups. So a lot of those kids are very concerned. Kids can worry about just about anything. And no doubt they worry if their teachers are going to like them, if their colleagues are going to like them, how are they going to get home after school. They have all of these concerns that may seem pretty obvious to parents but not all so obvious to the kids. And that leads to a lot of different tips that parents can hear about from various experts, and also kids can keep track as well.

    TEN TIPS FOR KIDS
    1. Wear your running shoes daily. If you really want to wear boots, Mary Janes, or other non-running shoes, then pack your running shoes in your backpack.
    2. Bring a healthy snack to school. Eliminate the junk food while you are young. It will help your eating habits as you get older.
    3. If you are a child who can't sit still in school, talk to your parents and see if one of them will take you for an early morning run before school. If this works to help you focus in school, please let us know at KidsRunning.Com.
    4. Pack an extra pair of socks in your backpack to change to after recess in case your socks get wet.
    5. Play at recess. Don't bring a book to read outside on your break. Remember you are sitting all day in school. You need your exercise. Make sure that you do plenty of running or walking at this time.
