ROSELAND, N.J., Aug. 6, 1998 Every parent's back-to-school list should include more than just pencils and paper. Parents also need to think about well-child exams, immunizations, exercise, and an emphasis on eating right. "The anticipation and preparation for another school year is exciting but also stressful for parents and children," said Dr. Charles Cutler, vice president, Medical Services, for Prudential HealthCare(SM). "By taking steps to ensure that your children start off healthy, you are well on your way to a happy and successful school year." Parents should provide psychological support, as well as make sure children receive necessary medical check-ups and immunizations. Dr. Cutler noted that these types of preventive care check-ups and tests may be covered by health plans like the ones offered by Prudential HealthCare. Here are some tips from Dr. Cutler to help make your child's school year a healthier one.

Removing the New Smell from Back-to-School Clothes More Cleaning Solutions by Annie Berthold-Bond Care2.com Producer, Green Living Channels I always find the scene of those new clothes so carefully laid out by a child for the first day of school touching to the point of bringing tears to my eyes. Those new clothes represent so much anticipation and excitement, and as a parent one wants everything to work out the way they hope for their children. The “new” smell in clothes is sometimes an indicator of the presence of toxic chemicals, and like most parents, I want to do everything I can to keep my child safe. Here is the tried-and-true method I’ve found to get rid of those unwanted chemicals. With best wishes for a great beginning to the school year!
Simple Solution:
printer friendly version
If you can get your child to let you, and unless the clothes are 100 percent organic, wash new clothes first before they wear them to school. Or the bedding if you have bought new sheets for a child going to college. That “new” smell is a potent mixture of chemicals such as formaldehyde and urea resins, and they should be removed. The chemicals are used to “finish” fabric for a range of purposes including stain resistance, mercerizing, keeping them from wrinkling, and even sometimes for disinfecting. Most contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which, like formaldehyde, are often sensitizers and suspected carcinogens.

Child and Teen Health Back-To-School Eye Exams Audio File Children should have an eye exam by age 3, followed by an annual eye exam before going back to school through age 18. Vision problems that are not detected and treated may lead to permanent damage not only to eyesight but also to performance in school, desire to learn and self-esteem. A child may have good vision one year and problems the next. As children grow, their eyes change shape and problems may develop. Some indications that your child may have a problem seeing include:
  • poor eye-hand coordination;
  • short attention span;
  • squinting;
  • dislike of close work; and
  • headaches.
Children with vision problems may not complain because they often assume that everyone sees the way they do. A child's first eye exam at 3 years old provides a baseline for comparison to future back-to-school exams. Children do not have to be able to read or even speak well to have a routine eye exam that can reveal problems. The vision screenings done in school check only distance vision. They miss many vision problems and are not a substitute for a complete back-to-school eye exam by an eye-health professional. A complete exam includes tests to determine how clearly the eyes see, how accurately they focus and how well the eye muscles are working. Color perception, depth perception and field of vision are also tested. A professional eye exam is critical for the early detection of eye disease and is mandatory for children with diabetes.

Back to School Children with cancer often experience disruptions in their education due to repeated hospitalizations, side effects from chemotherapy, or generally not feeling well enough to fully participate in daily school life. As their health improves and treatment allows, returning to school can be either a relief or a challenge for children with cancer.
IEPs
Childhood cancer patients (and survivors) may have physical or mental disabilities because of their treatment. Accordingly, these patients have certain legal rights in the public education system. The U.S. government guarantees an education plan designed specifically for your child, called an Individual Education Plan or IEP . Your child's rights, how to obtain an IEP, and ideas on what to include in the IEP are discussed in the following Ped-Onc page:

Back-To-School Transitions:
What Parents Can Do
By Ted Feinberg, Ed.D., and Kathy Cowan
Getting a new school year off to a good start can influence children's attitude, confidence, and performance both socially and academically. The transition from August to September can be difficult for children and parents. Even children who are eager to return to class must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and, for some, pressures associated with school life. The degree of adjustment depends on the child, but parents can help their children (and the rest of the family) manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude.  Following are a few helpful suggestions to ease the transition and promote a successful school experience.
Before School Starts
Be sure your child is in good physical and mental health.  Schedule doctor and dental checkups early. Discuss with your pediatrician any concerns you have over your child's emotional or psychological development.  Your doctor can help determine if your concerns are normal, age appropriate issues or require further assessment.  Your child will benefit if you can identify and begin addressing a potential issue before school starts. Schools appreciate the efforts of parent to remedy problems sooner than later.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL CHECKLIST Children aren't concerned whether their new backpacks could lead to chronic neck and back problems later in life or what safety rules to follow on their way to and from school. It's up to you to keep them safe and healthy. Follow these smart strategies to head off common school-related health and safety problems. Learn your school's medication policies It is important to know your school's rules about handling and distributing medicine before the school year starts, in the event your child is well enough to go to school but needs to take medication during school hours. Talk to the nurse or person in charge of administering medication at your school and give them information in writing, including the name of the drug, reason for the medication, dosage, times when it should be taken, possible side effects, prescribing physician's name and telephone number, and emergency contact information. Deliver the medication yourself, in its original container, to the appropriate official. "Your child needs to be clear on the medication instructions as well, so he or she knows things are being done properly," says Wyndolyn Bell, M.D., secretary of the Georgia chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Your child also should be aware that sharing prescription or over-the-counter medication with another student could lead to an accidental overdose, as well as suspension or expulsion from school.

Coordinated School Health Programs
What is Coordinated School Health?
EIGHT COMPONENTS 1. Health Education 2. Physical Education 3. Health Services 4. Nutrition Services ... 8. Family and Community
Families, health care workers, the media, religious organizations, community organizations that serve youth, and young people themselves also must be systematically involved. However, schools could provide a critical facility in which many agencies might work together to maintain the well-being of young people. The following are working descriptions of the eight components of a coordinated school health program.
  • Health Education: A planned, sequential, K-12 curriculum that addresses the physical, mental, emotional and social dimensions of health. The curriculum is designed to motivate and assist students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, and reduce health-related risk behaviors. It allows students to develop and demonstrate increasingly sophisticated health-related knowledge, attitudes, skills, and practices. The comprehensive health education curriculum includes a variety of topics such as personal health, family health, community health, consumer health, environmental health, sexuality education, mental and emotional health, injury prevention and safety, nutrition, prevention and control of disease, and substance use and abuse. Qualified, trained teachers provide health education.

Helping the child who is precocious Introduction For some children, making the transition from summer to school requires more than having the right book bag or sneakers. When parents have particular concerns about a child advance preparation can smooth the way. This article describes some common child and family issues and offers parents suggestions for helping their kids. Back to top.
    A parent's concern - a place to start Not all children are excited and eager about facing the first day of school. For the child with a less confident style, a learning problem, a mental health issue, or a stressful situation at home, school may present a special challenge. Yet with proper preparation the school year can be rewarding for child, parent, and teacher. Although no parent or child wants to be labeled by a particular problem, understanding a child's unique style or situation, recognizing his or her strengths and weaknesses, anticipating potential trouble spots, and communicating with educational staff can start things off on a positive note and avoid wasted time later in the year.
