An anthrax survivor looks back
Anthrax victim Leroy Richmond feels lucky to be alive. By Rea Blakey CNN Medical Unit WASHINGTON (CNN) The odds were against Leroy Richmond living to tell his story. He was the first of four Washington D.C.-area postal workers diagnosed with inhalation anthrax. "I was a victim of circumstance in the beginning," Richmond said. "It's an amazement to me how two of my closest friends that I knew quite well got the anthrax bacteria and died and myself and another person got the same effect from the bacteria and lived." Richmond spent 27 days in the hospital fighting for his life and he's been on sick leave since then. When he was infected, he was working clean-up detail. "They knew the postmaster was coming that Thursday," he said. The letter sent to Sen. Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, had been found the week before, he added.

The players and Laker Girls conducted a special reading time out for 50 children who had completed the club’s reading challenge. They read a few books, talked about the importance of reading, and took questions from the children. Afterwards the players and Laker Girls mingled and took pictures with volunteers from the various organizations and other attendees. The afternoon concluded with a dance contest for the children. Each child that completed a designated number of health screenings received a Lakers backpack filled with school supplies. In addition, outside, the kids were able to enjoy food provided by Ralphs, refreshments provided by Pepsi, and an interactive fun zone.

Editor's note: CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta answers medical questions submitted by e-mail on "Your Health" at 2:30 p.m. EDT Saturdays. Questions and answers are posted on CNN.com after the show. Q: What are the dangers in the sugar substitute aspartame found in various diet products? Richard in Anderson, Indiana A: Having a sweet tooth is perfectly normal. But some people, like diabetics, can't indulge in the sweet stuff, and others are told to cut back in order to lose weight. E-MAIL DR. GUPTA Click here to submit medical questions to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, then watch CNN at 2:30 p.m. EDT Saturdays to see if it is answered. That is where artificial sweeteners come in. Among the most popular is aspartame. While some groups have tried to link aspartame to everything from multiple sclerosis to brain tumors, the Food and Drug Administration says it is completely safe at "normal intake levels."
