Back to School with Idioms

This is a little bulletin board that I have picked up along the way. The idea behind it is to give students a positive outlook to go into the new school year with. This could also be used for coming back from winter break and starting the new calendar year. To the right are downloadable versions of what the bulletin board looks like put together, and its central element. The second is sized for printing on a 8.5 x 11 inch sheet for use with an overhead projector.

Print these out on cardstock and then laminate. You can use them in a pocket chart or you could use glue a magnet on the back and place them on the white board. This will make your job easier every am. No need to write the schedule just add slips. The slips include graphics to support the words! We're heading into Grade!

Back to School 2001: Bad teeth epidemic among poor children Sunday, August 26, 2001 By Rachel Smolkin, Post-Gazette National Bureau Six-year-old Edith Becerra has a toothache, but her mother can't find a dentist to treat her. Edith's tooth began hurting when a filling fell out. Now, she's having trouble eating, and her mother worries that the pain will worsen, making it difficult for her to do her schoolwork as she begins first grade tomorrow. "I know what a toothache is, and I know she's going to have problems in school if they don't attend to it now," said Evelia Becerra, who speaks only Spanish. First in a series 5 Pitt dental students learn of the need first-hand
Becerra, an apple-packer in Erie, asked a migrant health services coordinator to help her find a dentist quickly. But only two dental clinics in the Erie area take patients on Medicaid, the government program for low-income families. Becerra was told that the earliest possible appointment for Edith was Dec. 28 four painful months away. Tooth decay, a common chronic childhood condition, is easily treated in most young children. But many low-income children in America do not have such care, either because they have no dental insurance or because their parents cannot find a dentist who will treat them.

    Toward Greater Accountability
The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) endorses the investigative findings of the report of the National Council on Disability, "Back to School on Civil Rights" ("NCD Report"). The NCD Report provides full, fair and undeniable evidence that all fifty states have been and continue to be out of compliance with the IDEA.
More to the point, the NCD Report's exhaustive documentation of this failure casts serious doubts on the validity of the basic premises underlying the IDEA compliance structure and process. A self-regulatory monitoring system - federal oversight of state implementation of local compliance - that does not achieve its desired goals after 25 years of development and modification is incapable of assuring compliance.
By contrast, there is widespread agreement that compliance has been significantly enhanced through litigation instituted by parents of children with disabilities and their representatives. These improvements have occurred despite the substantial impediments parents face in securing and defending their children's right to the free and appropriate public education promised by Congress.

Any ideas? A back to school themed party is a smart idea. Not only is it a fun, positive way to help kids adjust mentally for the new schedule just ahead, but it can be a good chance to reunite friends who may not have seen each other much over the summer. A craft-making party is a theme that lets you kill two birds with one stone: Your kids' energy is harnessed, and they get a jump on creating some cool school supplies for themselves. One of my favorites is a Book Covering Party . With minimal supplies and some brown paper bags, kids can customize their reading material with all kinds of designs. Or, you could try a more general School Supply Party, where kids make and decorate Pencil Boxes Pencil Pals , or even customized Lunch Sacks . The perfect snack for either occasion? Week 13: Back to school

Hurrah! Preschool's back in session. Harry's so excited to see his teachers and all of his little pals, and I'm so relieved he's happy. Since Harry and I have spent nearly every day of the last month together, I've been bracing myself for a tearful separation . But, thank goodness, our big goodbye was less than cinematic. I asked for a kiss and Harry, busy making a Play-Doh pie, nonchalantly tilted his cheek toward me as if to say, "If you want it, you'll have to come and get it." So I pecked his cheek, gave him a hug, and made a quick exit. As I was leaving I heard him say to one of the teachers, "Mommy's going home. She comes later." Houston, we have a routine! All talk, all the time
Speaking of silence (or lack thereof), everyone always talks about how tiring it is to run after a 2-year-old, but more often than not I'm out of breath from constantly talking: "Do you want noodles or rice?" "Don't take your shoes off!" "Yes, Harry, I see your toes." The most exhausting part of this repartee, I think, is the repetition. If I don't parrot Harry's every word or answer every question he volleys at me, he'll simply switch to automatic pilot, putting the phrase on a continuous loop until I respond: "Wook, Mommy, wook! I have teeth in my mouth! Mommy, Mommy! I have teeth in my mouth!" ad infinitum. Before I had Harry, if I saw a kid trying to get his mom's attention by repeating "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy ..." I'd think, "Why doesn't she just say, 'What, dear?' so he'll shut up?"

Letchworth State Park, New York Belinda Akpa, Simon Hanslip and Mark Sains have recently arrived back from a trip touring several cereal plants of the US food producer General Mills Inc. As part of the course for the PhD with Advanced Chemical Engineering Practice (created in co-operation with Massachusetts Institute of Technology), the three were participating in a Practice School run by MIT and GMI. The Practice School is designed to introduce students to an industrial environment, and to allow students to perform research in a professional manner. Although hard work, the students agree that they obtained some valuable insights into research in a food company and the technicalities of acquiring data from a continuously operated production line. At the weekends, when work was not keeping them busy, the students managed to see some sights: Niagara Falls whilst in Buffalo, a famous comedy club (Second City) in Chicago and, strangely, a giant cherry sitting on a spoon in Minneapolis!
