This developed into a two-year conflict with the Georgian government, in which at least 1,000 people died. Relations between South Ossetia and Georgia have since improved, although there is still no formal settlement. North Ossetia vs Ingushetia, 1992

Azerbaijanis vote on dynasty
Aliev applauds musicians during a concert Story Tools BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) Azerbaijanis were voting Wednesday in an election that could create a family dynasty, as President Geidar Aliev's son seeks to succeed his 80-year-old father. Ilham Aliev leads a field of eight candidates in the election, standing alone for the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party after his ailing father pulled out of the race less than two weeks ago. Nearly 4.4 million people are registered to vote in this oil-rich former Soviet republic on the Caspian Sea. Nearly 36 percent of the electorate had voted as of 2:30 p.m. (0930 GMT), the Central Election Commission said. An election observer from the opposition party Musavat (Equality) set himself on fire after election officials in the southwestern region of Agdam refused to accept a complaint alleging that people were casting multiple ballots, the party said. It added that the man was in police custody in serious condition and that the polling station had been rendered unusable by the fire. Even before election day, international organizations reported widespread violations, including biased media coverage, violence at opposition protests ignited by police or pro-government provocateurs, and intimidation of opposition sympathizers.

Azerbaijan Azerbaijan was once a major stopover on the Great Silk Route, and there are many captivating sights to see in this ancient country - Bronze Age petroglyphs, medieval minarets and mosques, the famous carpets. With an oil bonanza incipient, the capital Baku is fast becoming a boomtown.
Warning
In recent years, Azerbaijan has been the site of several unexplained acts of terrorism, notably in the form of bombings. It's best to steer clear of the western region of Nagorno-Karabakh and the Azerbaijan-Armenia border region. The bombings have tended to target government buildings, hotels, tourist sites, residential complexes, crowded public places and public transport. In Baku, walking alone and using public transport and the Metro at night is best avoided. In the western region, the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh is unresolved. Although hostilities ceased in 1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia have yet to settle their differences regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which in the meantime operates as a self-proclaimed, unrecognised republic with close but unofficial ties to Armenia. Armed clashes continue sporadically along the ceasefire line and the border with Armenia, and anti-personnel landmines are dotted throughout the areas close to the front lines. Full country name: Republic of Azerbaijan Area: 86,600 sq km
