Special Reports SERVICES Video E-Mail Services CNNtoGO SEARCH Web CNN.com Azeri leader pulls out of election Aliyev has been undergoing treatment in the U.S. Story Tools (CNN) The ailing president of Azerbaijan, Heidar Aliyev, is bowing out of the re-election race in favor of his son, the prime minister, who also is a candidate. Ismail Abdul Rakhmanov, an aide to Azerbaijan's ambassador to Russia, Thursday told CNN that Aliyev has withdrawn from the race. The announcement was read by an anchor on Azeri television Thursday evening. The president is being treated in the United States at the Cleveland Clinic for heart and kidney problems. "I am convinced I will recover soon and come back to my home country to be with my people. Today I have withdrawn my candidacy in favor of Ilham," he is quoted as saying in a media report. He was referring to Ilham Aliyev, his son. Azerbaijan is a former Soviet republic.
