Apprentice Aviators Taste Fear and Fun High Above Terra Firma By Julia Sommer, Public Affairs
Posted August 18, 1999 UC Flying Club members receive basic flight training in Cessna 152s and the Cessna 140. "I'd wanted to fly ever since I was kid," says John Lowe, a researcher in the Department of Linguistics and a member of the UC Flying Club. "When I was 23 and working for the Office of the President as a computer programmer, I joined the club on a lark. I needed a new challenge. "When you're in control of a plane for the first time, it's so exhilarating a combination of power and terror," says Lowe. "You have the normal fears: 'Is this tin can going to fall out of the sky? Are pieces going to fall off?' Then you start to relax and enjoy it. Looking at the world from the air is a marvelous experience, especially in the Bay Area at night it's like a carnival." Lowe is one of 65 members of the UC Flying Club, founded in 1939. Open to Berkeley faculty, staff, students and alumni, it also accepts applicants with no UC affiliation.

Voluntary Swedish aviators during the Second World War
by Håkan Gustavsson and Andreas Holmberg A number of Swedish pilots and aircrews served as volunteers during the Second World War. The most well-known are the volunteers in F19, the Swedish unit who took part in the Finnish-Soviet Winter War of 1939-40, but a number of Swedes also served in the RAF. These pages give a short presentation of these men. If anyone have more information about voluntary Swedish aviators during this period, please don’t hesitate to contact the authors. Håkan Gustavsson

U.S. officials: Tehran vows to aid, return crew members

SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report WASHINGTON (CNN) U.S. officials have held discussions with Iran to prepare for the chance that U.S. pilots and crews might have to bail out in Iranian territory after battle over neighboring Iraq, officials said. Officials told CNN the discussions took place during the past two months. The agreement is not believed to be formal, mainly because there are no direct government-to-government ties between Tehran and Washington. However, sources said the Iranians have agreed that if the United States were to lose pilots or air crew members over Iran either due to mechanical failure of an aircraft or hostile fire from Iraq the Iranian government would render medical assistance to the U.S. personnel and return them as quickly as possible. Any flyable aircraft would also be returned.

Return to Chapter 2
Aviation in the nineteen-thirties and forties inspired much great writing. Here are samples from several of the best accounts from the period... Around the
World in Eight Days Wiley Post and Harold Gatty
The clock on the instrument board showed that it lacked 5 minutes, maybe a fraction less, of being 5 A.M. when I pulled the "Winnie Mae" back on her tail at Roosevelt Field. The grass was wet, and I was relieved that no side gust hit us as we plunged along. I wouldn't have dared to use the brakes.
The stout old wing mushed along for 100 feet without pulling the ship off. A hard hummock hit the right wheel and flexed the shock absorber to its limit. A rut sent the plane bounding into the air, but it settled back with a light bounce.
Suddenly, as the airspeed hit 80, the stick became rigid and sensitive to my touch. From its mushing position the wing pitched to a higher angle, and I moved forward a little to hold the ship down.
The wheels spun idly, and I could see, through the rain, the eaves of the white hangars and the flashing track of the propellor. The red roof of the Air Associates hangar, which had been the home of the "Winnie Mae" for a month, swept underneath...

...Nothing could bridge the gap but "Sayonara!"

CEO of the Cockpit #33: Dog Is My Co-Pilot

Even a hard-nosed old captain like AVweb's CEO of the Cockpit has a soft spot for some people and even some animals. Especially ones that are willing to go flying on those dark and stormy nights. This is a dog story, but it's a pilot's dog story.

Firefighting Fleet Gets A Boost...
With the fire season already under way in the Western states (and 33 heavy water bombers grounded), the U.S. Forest Service last Wednesday said it is reconfiguring its firefighting fleet. The agency will contract with private companies for 139 additional aircraft, in an effort to make up for the 33 aging air tankers whose contracts were canceled last month after the NTSB raised safety concerns . The $66 million in new contracts will pay for up to 46 single-engine airtankers, 26 heavy helicopters, 45 medium helicopters and two Canadair CL 215 water bombers.
