Nature watch: Skilled insects put aviators to shame
Advertisement OAS_AD('Right'); By Norris Ingells
Lansing State Journal Summer means just about every airport in Michigan holds an air show of some kind. They're very popular, attracting thousands when they feature famous groups like the U.S. Navy Blue Angels or Air Force Thunderbirds. But believe it or not, some of the flying going on around area ponds and wetlands includes maneuvers even these skilled aviators can't do. Consider, for example, dragonflies, which can stop in midair and back up. Try that with a jet fighter! Even romance by these lovely and useful little creatures is beautiful. They can actually mate while airborne. Anything you can see at an air show these fabulous fliers can duplicate. You want a "Top Gun"-style dogfight? Watch a couple of dragonflies in combat. In his fine book "Insects of the Great Lakes Region," Lansing entomologist Gary Dunn says our familiar whitetail males, for example, "are aggressive and may drive most other dragonflies from their territory." Prefer a bombing run? Mama dragonfly zooms in on the surface of ponds and wetlands, actually poking her egg-bearing abdomen into the water. Some species plant one egg at a time; others let the contact with the water's surface wash off several.

Early Exhibition Aviators
Soon after the Wright brothers' first flight in December 1903, a great deal of debate arose about the best uses for "aeroplanes" (the spelling of the era). On one hand, some people wanted to develop aeroplanes for utilitarian purposes; others wanted to use them to entertain and to help spark the public's interest in and enthusiasm about flight. Aeroplane builders like the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss , believing that the public was anxious to see aeroplanes first hand, fielded teams of exhibition fliers who traveled the country and demonstrated their aircrafts.

Aviator
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Aviators are people who fly aircraft either for pleasure or for a job. The term is normally applied to pilots but it can be applied more broadly, for example to include people such as wing-walkers who regularly take part in an aerobatic display sequence. The term was more commonly used in the early days of aviation and has connotations of bravery and adventure. As Steve Fossett has shown with his solo flight around the globe in a helium balloon , there are still challenges to be flown and records to be broken. edit
U.S. pilot's license
The requirements to obtain a private pilot certificate (single engine land aircraft) in the United States (from the FAA ) are:
  • Be at least 17 years old Be able to read, speak, and write the English language Obtain a third class medical certificate from an FAA-designated doctor Pass a computerized aeronautical knowledge test Accumulate at least 40 hours of flight time including 20 hours of flight with an instructor and 10 hours of solo flight Pass a flight test administered by an FAA-designated examiner
