Fri, 10 Aug 2001 08:54:28 -0700 Now, if we can do this, we might also be able to perform location projections to warn the pilot of impending doom (if you stay at this altitude and speed, you'll hit a mountain in 2 minutes), or of airspace violations (on present course, you're going to fly through a Class B airspace,) and etc. Be very careful of this. There are more regulations for aviation than any other single field I can think of and navigation is one of the stickiest parts. Whatever you do, don't say "and this program can warn you if you are on a collision course with a mountain". DEM data, especially publicly available data, is not all that accurate to begin with. Add to that that people like to stick things like 25m microwave towers and windmills on top of mountains... So, go ahead and program the capability, but don't publicize it as warning device. And talk to a lawyer familiar with navigation law who can tell you the proper way to say "this is not to be used as a safety device". > No, go for it. :) cheers, -matt - Matt Wilkie * Yukon Renewable Resources GIS

Fri, 10 Aug 2001 11:41:00 +0200 (CEST) [Posted and mailed to freegis-list] You need to check freegis.org which is the most comprehensive overview site for GIS related free software. The FreeGIS project also hosts a mailinglist where interested people might lurk. (For this reason I have also mailed this posting to the list.) Another interesting project for you is certainly: FlightGear and its Altas project. http://atlas.sourceforge.net/ 3B739C91.97D6AF67@telocity.com ainut1@telocity.com I had an idea that I'd like to run past you guys. Maybe it has already been done. I'm going to install an embedded system into an airplane, primarily as an engine monitoring tool. Then I thought that with a cheap ($150) serial port GPS, I could add GPS capabilities to the screen. To make that easier to use, I could load the US DTED (elevation data isn't it?)

Where can aviation signals be found?
Aviation Bands
A large number of aviation frequencies can be received by the Kenwood R-5000 receiver at this website. Aviation Signal Categories
Some aviation signals can be classified as being purely for navigation (NAV) or communications (COM), but some are used for both. For example, some aircraft navigation beacons and VHF Omnirange (VOR) navigation signals also have voice communications. The Low Frequency (LF) Aviation Band
Low frequencies were very important to air navigation years ago, but became increasingly less important as more reliable systems operating at higher frequencies were developed and became widely available. Many Low Frequency navigation beacons were decommissioned long ago because of that. The few that remain primarily provide backup navigation in the event of primary navigation system failures, although some are used routinely even today in the execution of instrument landings. Long ago, before VHF Omnirange (VOR) and other superior navigation systems were developed, that band contained AN Radio Ranges and Non-Directional Beacons (NDB's). 344 AN Radio Ranges still existed in the United States in 1959, but none exist today. Some NDB's are all that remain.

By Leif Peterson
BETHEL
An aviation safety revolution and less crashes due to high tech controls will start in Bethel and spread statewide by 2002 after the National Transportation Safety Board found Alaska the most dangerous state to fly.
"Thirty-eight percent of Alaska's plane crashes over three years could have been prevented with Project Capstone's modern navigation gear found a study of 112 commercial accidents," said Deputy Project Manager Ellis McElroy.
Set for take-off in 2000, the $400 million Flight 2000 (Federal Aviation Administration's original plan) was replaced with the $11 million Project Capstone in October '98, said McElroy.
"National airlines shot-down Flight 2000 because they objected to small planes getting extensive navigation funding," McElroy said.
Revolutionizing aviation navigation in Alaska, Capstone's Global Positioning System and data link powered cockpit display will show exact position, nearby aircraft, and weather, says the FAA. Twelve ground stations will be built and ten runways upgraded to support Capstone, the FAA says.
"Getting lost should become a thing of the past," McElroy said.

      Introduction
This introduction is written for pilots (and others) who are interested in great circle navigation and would like to know how to compute courses, headings and other quantities of interest. These formulae can be programmed into your calculator or spreadsheet. I'll attempt to include enough information that those familiar with plane trigonometry can derive additional results if required. It is a well known that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. However anyone attempting to fly from Los Angeles to New York on the straight line connecting them would have to dig a very substantial tunnel first. The shortest distance, following the earth's surface lies vertically above the aforementioned straight line route. This route can be constructed by slicing the earth in half with an imaginary plane through LAX and JFK. This plane cuts the (assumed spherical) earth in a circular arc connecting the two points, called a great circle. Only planes through the center of the earth give rise to great circles. Any plane will cut a sphere in a circle, but the resulting little circles are not the shortest distance between the points they connect. A little thought will show that lines of longitude (meridians) are great circles, but lines of latitude, with the exception of the equator, are not.
