Ed Williams' Aviation page.
My 182
My aviation formulary contains a fairly complete collection of great circle and rhumb line navigation formulae. It also contains standard atmosphere properties and E6B functions. A pure Ascii version is available for ftp download . Some of the functions have been programmed into a Javascript on-line calculator, some into an Excel spreadsheet. A beginning on a (mathematical!) primer on navigation on an ellipsoidal earth is here. I'm planning on getting this finished sometime... A discussion of compass errors, with formulae is here. I've written software that computes magnetic variation anywhere on (or above) the earth's surface, using either the WMM or IGRF reference models. There are Mac DOS linux , and Java executables available by ftp. A web calculator is here . C source code released under the GPL is here , in Visual Basic (courtesy Ian Billing) here Francisco Bernal has adapted the code to make a Windows version with an interactive map interface here . It comes with source code and a dll. 16bit version My favorite weather briefing links. (I open a collection of them in tabs, using the Mozilla browser. Try it. You'll like it, provided you have a fast Internet connection.

http://virtualskies.arc.nasa.gov/main/mainnavigation.html
Introduction This section of VIRTUAL SKIES will introduce you to how to use a compass, read an aeronautical chart, and plot a course. You will learn how to calculate flight distance, flight time and fuel consumption. You will gain an understanding of ground track and true course and how the wind affects your flight. This will provide you with a little bit of the basic knowledge that all pilots and flight controllers need for their work. After thoroughly reviewing the " Tutorial ," engage in some activities that let you put your knowledge of Aviation Navigation to practical use in the " Take Control " sub-section. The " You Decide " sub-section will provide some additional, interesting activities in which you can sharpen your skills and reinforce your knowledge. Finally, go for your "Certification" in Aviation Navigation document.write('take the pass/no pass quiz. If you pass your certification, you will receive a printout of your achievement.'); download a quiz on this topic.

4. Navigation You Decide Intro
You Decide This is where your knowledge of aviation navigation meets the real world! To proceed to the aviation navigation You Decide scenario click here.
http://virtualskies.arc.nasa.gov/navigation/youDecide/intro.html
You Decide
This is where your knowledge of Aviation Navigation meets the real world! Below you will find a scenario that places your team in the middle of a real world problem and gives you and your team members specific roles to play. You and your team members must solve this problem by reviewing all the pertinent information and making the best decision possible. You must follow the steps in the decision-making process and you must be thorough in your work because others are depending on you and your team to come up with a decision that gives the greatest benefits. These decisions are not easy and your decision will not please everyone. However, a well-reasoned and sound decision needs to be made and you and your team members will need to make that critical decision.
First, review the steps in the decision-making process. Print the decision-making process page including the matrix you will use to record the steps you follow in arriving at your decision. Next, review the problem scenario. This explains the problem that you are going to solve. It also provides you with a list of resources you may use in solving the problem. Just as in real life, some of these resources may be critical to your decision. Other resources may be only somewhat applicable. And some of the resources may not apply to the problem at all. An important part of the decision-making process is what information is relevant, and what is not!

Fact Sheets - GPS The technology behind GPS is relatively simple. A constellation of 24 satellites orbiting 11,000 miles above the earth emits signals to receivers on earth. By measuring the travel time of a signal transmitted from each satellite, a receiver can calculate its distance from that satellite. Satellite positions are used by a receiver as precise reference points to determine the location of the receiver. When receiving the signals from at least four satellites, a GPS receiver can determine latitude, longitude, altitude, and time. In 1989 the Department of Defense (DoD) launched the first production series of GPS satellites. This effort was the initial step in revolutionizing the way we find our location on earth. The 24 satellite system was declared operational by the DoD on December 8, 1993. A similar declaration was made by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in February 1994 regarding the civil operational status of GPS. The overall objective of the FAA is to support the operational use of satellite navigation for all civil aviation needs including departure operations, terminal, oceanic, en route, non-precision and precision approaches, auto-landing, and surface navigation. Some of the incremental steps to achieve this goal have already occurred, many are currently underway, and more are planned for the near future.
