A Day Like None Other
The crucial importance of the actions of hundreds of thousands during the hours of invasion on Normandy's beaches June 6, 1944, cannot be overstated. Hinging on the success and sacrifice of that day was nothing less than the survival of western civilization as we know it and the potential future of freedom and democracy for hundreds of millions. TheHistoryNet salutes and pays tribute to the veterans of D-Day, living and dead. ~ Roger L. Vance, TheHistoryNet Editor in Chief

http://www.esparacing.com/Aviation history/ornithopters/ornithopters.htm
Ornithopters, Helicopters and Kites As the dream of flight lurched toward reality during the nineteenth century, two developments begun centuries earlier came to a climax. One was the failure of attempts to create an ornithopter—a flying machine that emulated birds by having flapping wings—and its cousin, the helicopter, and the other was the development of the kite, which had been around in some form or other for centuries.
In most minds, Italian theorist Giovanni Alfonso Borelli had laid the ornithopter question to rest, yet doubts persisted. New findings about bird flight were casting doubt on Borelli’s conclusions, and new engineering techniques and designs were keeping the possibility of human-powered winged flight alive. One widely publicized plan was that of
Frenchman Jean Pierre Blanchard, who later achieved fame as a balloonist. His machine

http://www.esparacing.com/Aviation history/airplane at war/Bombers.htm
The Bombers of World War I Bombing did not play much of a role in World War I, though the attempt to build planes capable of carrying large loads did advance aviation technology, particularly toward the end of the war. The earliest bombs used in the war weren’t bombs at all, but thin steel darts called fléchettes, dropped over soldiers in trenches or on enemy aircraft. The Germans used the Zeppelin effectively in bombing Paris in 1914 (though more as a psychological weapon), and attempted to use Zeppelins to bomb London in May 1915, but the ships were so easy to spot and bring down, and so costly when lost, that the bombing soon stopped. (In fact, the British had successfully bombed the Zeppelin sheds at Friedrichshafen, but soon determined that it was better to allow the airships to cross the Channel and be shot down over British soil.) It took a few years, but the British succeeded in both goals. The de Havilland D.H. 4 was a light bomber that also served as a fighter plane at various stages of the war. It may not have been as agile as the smaller fighters, but with a top speed of 143 miles per hour (23Okph) it could hold its own against anything the Germans had and carry a significant bomb load as well. The D.H. 4 was eventually outfitted with the American-made Liberty engine— the plane was even known as the “Liberty Plane”—which enhanced its effectiveness. (The British attempted to create versions of the aircraft that would not take a Liberty engine, but the result, the D.H. 9, was not nearly as powerful or versatile an aircraft as the D.H. 4.)

Aviation history flies high at Purdue this month
The open house, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will include the Purdue Airport and aviation technology department facilities. The event is free and open to the public. The airport is located west of campus, just off of State Road 26. 1911 flight demonstration

Even before opening the first university-owned and operated airport in the country, Purdue and its alumni were involved in aviation. The university and its graduates were involved in some of the most important landmarks in aviation, beginning shortly after the Wright brothers' historic 1903 flight. "Lots of people know about Purdue's astronauts, but you could also call Purdue the 'cradle of pilots.' If you look at the history of flight, at every major development, every important achievement, Purdue alumni have been involved," said John Norberg, whose book, "Wings of the Dream: Purdue in Flight," will be released next month. "To this day, if you get on a commercial airplane there is a good chance there is at least one Purdue graduate in the cockpit." Purdue Airport 1964

Some of that history will be on display during the open house, as will some of Purdue's current flight facilities and research. Faculty members and students will be on hand to teach the public about the history and future of aviation at Purdue.

History MEDIA RELEASES Aviation Development Council ADC’s first mission was to foster a collaborative dialogue between the Port Authority, the airlines operating in the metropolitan area, and the neighboring communities in order to mitigate the issues related to airport operations (i.e., aircraft over-flight, aircraft noise, traffic congestion, etc.) and the newly introduced use of jet aircraft. The offices of Aviation Development Council are located in Whitestone, New York. ADC provides oversight and administration for both the Queens and New Jersey Air Services Development Offices (located at JFK International and Newark Liberty International Airports, respectively). These two offices are responsible for matching local business with aviation buyers at all four of the metropolitan area’s Port Authority-managed airports (LaGuardia, Kennedy, Newark Liberty, and Teterboro). The Aviation Development Council additionally promotes the advancement of aviation through its involvement in various civic, educational, cultural, and industry organizations or programs.
