History of Marine Corps Aviation
1950's - Technological Development
History of Marine Corps Aviation AcePilots Main Page WW2 Marine Aces Both in Korea and Japan, the period was one of intensive training, including landing exercises and joint exercises with the Army and the Air Force, concentrating on bombing and gunnery. One program within the wing was an exchange program between Japan-based and Korean-based squadrons. The objective of the program was to familiarize pilots new to the area with flight conditions in Korea, just in case the ceasefire didn't work out. In June 1956, the 1st MAW moved its headquarters to NAS Iwakuni, Japan, and control of the wing passed from the 5th AF to Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet (CinCPac), in Hawaii, thus ending Marine Aviation participation in the Korean police action. For Marine Aviation, this period between the Korean War and the major involvement of the U.S. in Vietnam in 1965 was characterized mainly by research and development. New aircraft in Marine Aviation reflected the tremendous effects of technological advances during the period leading up to Vietnam. The types which most advanced Marine Aviation capability during this nine year period were:
  • jet fighter and attack aircraft helicopters turboprop transport
It all began in 1947 with the commissioning of HMX- 1 at Quantico to develop the use of helicopters, and VMF-122 flying the first jet, the FH-1 Phantom at Cherry Point. These were closely followed by VMF-311 at El Toro in 1948, first with TO-1s (F-80Cs), the Lockheed Shooting Star jet indoctrination of experienced pilots, and then late in 1949 operating the F9F Panther for normal fighter/attack training.

AVMT 101 Are you an aviation enthusiast? Ever wonder how in less than 100 years, aviation has evolved from an airplane held together with wood, wire and fabric to today's ultra high-tech transports and supersonic aircraft? AVMT 101 will explore the development of the airplane and the helicopter (and a few contraptions in between!) as technology evolved and advancements were implemented. This course will also give you an appreciation for those designers and test pilots who made extreme sacrifices in pursuing the dream of flying higher, faster, and farther. Finally, we will explore the profound effect that aviation has had on economic, political, and military advancements. Course Description: AVMT 101 - 3 credits - Aviation History and Development explores the evolution of aviation, focusing on the rapid growth of the aviation industry and its influence on economic, military, and political advancement. Progressive developments in aircraft design, aerodynamics, powerplants, government agencies, and the national airspace system will be related. Course Objectives: Introduce the student to the aviation industry. Provide a history of flight, the growth of aviation, and the political and military impact of aviation. The principles of flight, basic aerodynamics, fundamentals of aircraft operation, powerplant theory, performance, aircraft types and design considerations will be related. Students will gain an understanding of the air traffic control system, airport operations, and be introduced to FAA regulations. Students will also have the opportunity to explore careers in aviation.

In 75 years Anchorage has grown from a meager railroad construction site with no aviation facilities, to a major player in today's air commerce system with five controlled airports and over twenty uncontrolled airports within the municipality. Anchorage's five controlled airports are all located within a seven mile radius of downtown. These airports recorded over 707,000 takeoffs and landings in 1990. This activity rivals that of the nation's major cities such as Chicago, whose O'Hare Airport (the world's busiest) recorded 790,000 operations. To understand the dynamics and importance of aviation to the growth of Anchorage, we need to explore the past, the present, and the future. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson appointed the Alaskan Engineering Commission to construct a railroad from the Ship Creek landing to the coal fields in the Matanuska Valley. This construction brought an influx of labors which promoted the planning and construction of the present town site. Although Alaskan aviation originated in Fairbanks in 1913, Anchorage quickly became the "Air Crossroads." Anchorage's illustrious aviation history began disastrously with the crash of its first airplane. C.O. Hammertree, an Anchorage World War I aviator and machine shop operator, shipped a Boeing seaplane to Anchorage.

    Aviation history
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Icarus and Daedalus Humanity's desire to fly probably dates back to the first time prehistoric man observed birds. Through all of recorded history aspects of this desire have surfaced from time to time. The most well known is the legendary story of Daedalus and Icarus . Daedalus was trapped on the island of Minos, and so built wings out of feathers and wax for himself and his son. His son Icarus, flew too close to the sun and the wax melted, destroying the wings and causing Icarus to fall into the sea, killing him. The legend was designed to be a cautionary tale about attempting to reach heaven, similar to the Tower of Babel story in The Bible . Nevertheless, it exemplifies man's desire to fly. The modern history of aviation has had several broad trends. Aircraft designers have struggled to make their planes go faster, fly higher, and be controlled more easily. To that effect, engine designs have moved towards more compact, more powerful engines, beginning with steam engines and ending with jet and rocket engines . Planes have become more streamlined and made of stronger and lighter materials. Initially airplanes were made of canvas and wood . Today airplanes are made of aluminium , and increasingly, titanium , which is prized for its lightness, strength and heat resistance. The methods used to control planes have advanced significantly as well. Initially planes were controlled by moving your entire body (

The Story Of World War 1 Aviation The history of World War One aviation is a rich and varied story. It was marked by a period of very rapid technological development, where aircraft evolved from their humble beginnings as slow moving, fragile, powered kites, into quick, agile, sturdy, fighter craft. The Great War consumed the world in a conflict that was unrivaled until that time. It was a kind of war far different than the one that was waged on the ground. The fight for control of the air was where the cunning, and bravery of the individual could matter for much. This website is my tribute to those fragile aircraft and to the brave pilots on both sides that flew them.
The Sopwith Triplane was used in combat by the Royal Naval Air Service. The stack of three wings reduced wingspan and increased wing area making it handle and climb better than biplanes.
The German Air Service began equipping fighter units with the rugged and reliable Pfalz D.III in August 1917. Together with the Albatros D.Va the D.III and the improved D.IIIa, helped revive Germany's air superiority over the Allies. Test Your Knowledge of
