WESTERN AUSTRALIAN AVIATION HISTORY
One of the major roles of the Bull Creek Collection is to encourage the understanding of Western Australian aviation history. Many of its aeroplanes and displays contribute directly to doing this. Western Australia is a very large state covering almost a million square miles (2.5 million square kilometres) and occupying a third of the continent of Australia. It's vast area and small population has made transport and communications very important for its inhabitants and so aviation has been a very important feature of its development. There were recorded balloon flights in Western Australia dating from around 1890. The first major sustained flights in Australia took place in Western Australia's capital, Perth, in January 1911 in a Bristol Boxkite flown by J J Hammond. Unlike earlier short flights in Australia these were sustained and controlled. During the longest flight the pilot got lost in cloud and returned to ground after nearly three quarters of an hour with his fuel almost exhausted. Developments overseas inspired Western Australians to construct their own aeroplanes. The most successful was the Kalgoorlie Biplane. It made a series of flights in the skies over Kalgoorlie and Perth before being put into storage when its makers became involved in the events of World War I.

Fascinating Read Sell is admittedly an outsider, always studying Boeing from the periphery of a neutral journalist, or family member of one employed there, yet he manages to deftly describe the essence and culture of Boeing as a longtime employee would. He understands and conveys the conservative approach Boeing has always taken toward state governmental affairs, and presents Boeing as above reproach in these matters, a reputation Boeing has gone to great lengths to ensure. I appreciated the detail to which Sell went to explain the legislative aspects of growth in Washington state and Boeing's occasional collisions with it - a good read whether one is interested in the evolution of Boeing from Bill Boeing's hobby shop to the economic powerhouse it is today, or if one is interested in the impact of growth. Sell also slips in delightful, but subtle witticisms. Facts without Fiction Sell's book cuts through the fog of loyalty to green or greed parties and explains the paradox of growth with facts not fictions. Everyone has something to learn from this book. Sell makes both sides of the growth issue stand naked before the mirror and it isn't always pretty. "Wings of Power" is a well written and thoroughly researched book that, unlike most of this genre, is not devoid of humor.

Description
History
It was born of a critical national need to fly over the enemy submarines ravaging shipping lanes during World War II. First designated the HK-1 for the Howard Hughes and Henry Kaiser venture that responded to the government requirement, it was later called the H-4 Hercules. The Hughes Flying Boat was to be the biggest airplane ever built and probably the most prodigious aviation project of all time. Only the courage and solitary dedication of Howard Hughes and his small development group caused this project to advance what a disgruntled U.S Senator dubbed the "flying lumberyard" resulting in its historic flight in November 1947. Now commonly tagged the "Spruce Goose" the aircraft has endured to become a popular cultural artifact telling a remarkable story of sacrifice, determination, and technological development. The HK-1, still the biggest aircraft ever built, was decades ahead of its time in the early 1940s. It revolutionized jumbo flying bodies and large lift capability, shaping modern flight. Along the way, the Flying Boat development encountered and dealt with tremendous design and engineering problems, from the testing of new concepts for large-scale hulls and flying control surfaces, to the incorporation of complex power boost systems that gave the pilot the power of 100 men in controlling this Hercules.

Naval Aviation Chronology in World War II
WORLD WAR II 1940-1945
Thirty years after the Navy had acquired its first airplane, and only 19 years after it had acquired its first aircraft carrier, naval aviation faced the supreme test of war. When it was called upon to carry the fight to the enemy, it not only carried out its tasks, but forged ahead to become the very backbone of fleet striking power.
If it had not already been shown in combat before the United States entered the war, all doubts as to the potency of naval air power were removed by the infamous, yet skillfully executed attack on Pearl Harbor, when Japanese carrier aircraft in one swift stroke devastated our principal naval base in the Pacific and eliminated a major portion of the Navy's heavy surface power. That our own forces had the kernel of a similar potential was demonstrated on a much smaller scale as carrier forces struck the first retaliatory blows.
The geographic position of the United States put it squarely between two wars that had little in common. Air operations on the Atlantic side, except for participation in three amphibious operations, were essentially a blockade and a campaign to protect ships delivering raw materials to our factories and war munitions and reinforcements to our Allies. In the Pacific, it was a matter of stopping an enemy advance which, in a few short months, had spread over all the western and parts of the south and central Pacific, and then carrying out the bitterly contested task of driving him homeward across the broad expanse of an island-dotted sea.

59. Nelson Aviation Consulting
Provides services in management, marketing, project evaluation and development. Based in Anchorage, Alaska.
http://www.nelsonavcon.com
TECHNOLOGY - AIR CHARTER - CERTIFICATION - MANAGEMENT - MARKETING We don't want to brag about it, but Alaska is where commercial aviation was born in North America - It was never a hobby up here; flying has been an essential part of our daily life from the early 1920's right up to the present. Even today, virtually everything - the people, the groceries, the medicine, the mail - still must travel by air. They say if you really want to understand what flying is all about, come to Alaska . That's an open invitation: Visit us, call us, or E-Mail us. We'd love to discuss the business of flying with you...
Nelson Aviation excels in providing prompt, accurate, and professional services in management, marketing, project evaluation and development for a wide range of companies dealing with the aviation industry. We know where aviation is headed and can show you how to achieve a "Lead Dog's" perspective in dealing with our industry. For example - We have extensive experience with the FAA's revolutionary CAPSTONE Program and we were the first to take an operational ADS-B vector back in 2001. Why waste valuable operational human resources on routine housekeeping functions when we can develop state of the art manuals and PowerPoint training presentations for your company's Flight Operations, Maintenance and Safety departments?

TEST OF STRENGTH
A small group of pioneer Navy and Marine Corps aviators had nurtured the early growth of Naval aeronautics, but it was too small and poorly equipped to wage war. When the call came in April 1917, one air station was operating, 48 aviators and students were available; 54 aircraft were on hand, but none of them had been designed for the work that would be required.
In the 19 months between declaration of war and the armistice, expansion was remarkable (see Appendix 4). Air stations sprang up on both sides of the Atlantic. Training programs were established at new air stations, on university campuses, and even with private industry. The Naval Reserve Flying Corps produced thousands of aviators, ground officers, mechanics and technical specialists. Aircraft of many types were produced, and one aircraft engine advanced from concept to mass production and operation.
The speed and breadth of the expansion produced an expected chaos, but Naval aviation nonetheless won a good wartime record. One of its units was the first from the United States to reach France. Naval aircraft flew more than 3 million nautical miles and attacked and damaged a dozen U-boats. By war's end, Navy and Marine Corps squadrons had organized the Northern Bombing Group which was preparing a round-the-clock air campaign which would have been the first strictly American air offensive of the war. When hostilities ceased, the Navy and Marine Corps aviators were using 27 bases in Europe, two in Canada, one in the Canal Zone, one in the Azores, and 12 in the United States.
