Reviews of Aviation Books
This page contains an index of aviation books that I've read. I have written reviews for some of the books. I seem to write at much slower pace than I read, so very few books actually have reviews. But if you are interested in a particular book on this list and the it has no review, just drop me a note and I'll write one. One recommendation I can give you is to read everything by Ernest Gann and Antoine de Saint-Exupery. If you want to know what I'm reading right now follow this link Author Index Title Index Subject Index
Links to other Aviation Book Sites
Here are some links to aviation book sites I have found around the Web.
  • Ayer Company Publishers - they have a pretty large list of aviation books. This is a commercial site you can buy books from them.
  • World War II Books - this is a nice list of books, it includes book reviews as well. They are classified by topics (like Axis Pilots America Pilots , etc).
  • Barnstorming to Air Safety - a website with a book on development of aviation. I haven't read the book yet, but it looks interesting.

Jungle Ace: Col. Gerald R. Johnson, the USAAFs Top Fighter Leader of the Pacific War > Customer Review #1: You almost meet the man

What Bruning has done in "Jungle Ace" is remarkable: he manages figuratively to bring to full flesh-and-blood life a man who has been dead for nearly 60 years. When I finished reading this biography, I felt I knew and understood Gerry Johnson: felt the weight of the command burden he carried, the exhilaration of victory in combat, the self-doubt when losses occurred, the grinding boredom of life in the SWPA, and the never-ending homesickness. I also got a sense of what he would be like in different situations: as a friend, as a commander, as a classmate. This is exceedingly hard to do, but Bruning has done it: he somehow got long-ago memories jumpstarted, got people talking. While I accept that some of the quoted conversations probably did not take place word for word as presented, I feel the approach helps the book make the man more real. Charles Martin, in his bio of Tom McGuire, did the same thing, and it worked for both authors.

Aviation in Literature
From Wiley Post's travelogue "Around the World in Eight Days" (not to be confused with the Jules Verne classic Around the World in Eighty Days ) to John Gillespie Magee Jr.'s inspirational poem "High Flight" to test pilot Chuck Yeager's yarn-filled autobiography, aviation has been the subject of, and the inspiration for, some of the great literature of the 20th century. The freedom, beauty, and adventure of flight have inspired many participants to write about their experiences in an attempt to share their excitement and emotions with a wider audience. Two of the earliest works of aviation-related literature were written by the most famous aerial adversaries of the First World War, Captain

Scott Crossfield joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACAthe predecessor of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA) at its High Speed Flight Research Station, Edwards, Calif., as a research pilot in June, 1950. During the next five years, he flew the X-1, X-4, X-5, XF-92A, and D-558-I and -II aircraft, accumulating 87 rocket flights in the X-1 and D-558-II aircraft, plus 12 flights in the latter aircraft employing only jet power. He made aeronautical history on November 20, 1953, when he reached the aviation milestone of Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound) or more than 1,320 miles per hour in the D-558-II Skyrocket. Taken aloft in the supersonic, swept-wing research aircraft by a Boeing P2B Superfortress "mother ship" (the Navy designation of the B-29), he dropped clear of the bomber at 32,000 feet and climbed to 72,000 feet before diving to 62,000 feet where he became the first pilot to fly more than twice the speed of sound. His flight was part of a carefully planned program of flight research with the Skyrocket that featured incremental increases in speed while NACA instrumentation recorded the flight data at each increment. Following his five years at the Edwards unit (redesignated the NACA High Speed Flight Station in 1954), Crossfield left the NACA in 1955 to work for North American Aviation, the firm just awarded a contract to design and build the X-15 rocket-powered airplane. There, he served as both pilot and design consultant for the revolutionary new aircraft.
