Autumn 2003 Dear Reader, Many an old story begins with the words, "Long ago, when animals could speak...," invoking a time when the boundary lines between the human and the animal worlds were less clearly drawn than they are today, and more easily crossed. Animals play a vibrant role in the earliest stories from around the globe: tales of animal gods and guardians, animal nurses and paramours, animal thieves and tricksters, animal teachers and ancestors. In ancient carvings and pictographs we find numerous representations of the animal kingdom, as well as images of men and women with animal characteristics—stag-men, bird-men, lion-women, snake-women, and other beings both beautiful and monstrous. Shamans and wizards were said to be able to shape-shift into animal form, attaining these powers after spending some time living with animals in the wild—sleeping in wolf dens, running with the antelope, learning their speech and their secrets. We'd like to think that our families, schools, and communities offer safe, healthy places for girls to interact and grow. Unfortunately, for many girls these havens are far from safe. Too often, unhealthy relationships lead to sexual and /or physical abuse. As mothers, mentors, and friends, our job lies in teaching girls how to have healthy relationships, and how to recognize and avoid unhealthy ones. On a national level, incidences of sexual abuse are overwhelming. Consider the following information: According to a July 31, 2001 article by The Associated Press Chicago, "Girls Victimized by Dates," one in five high school girls has been physically or sexually abused by a dating partner, significantly increasing their risk of drug abuse, suicide and other harmful behavior, a study suggests. The research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association stems from surveys of 4,163 public school students in Massachusetts, but the authors say the results likely apply to teens nationwideŠ.The prevalence of date rape and other sexual assaults prompted the American Academy of Pediatrics in June to issue updated guidelines for pediatricians. Citing statistics showing adolescents have the nation's highest rate of rape, the academy said doctors should ask patients at regular checkups if they've ever been sexually assaulted.

Issue 17 Winter 2003 Back Issues A Few Thoughts An elevator company recently touted a new lift door sensor that will reduce waiting times by 33% from 25 seconds to 17 seconds. Presumably in saving this time the lift passenger will be inspired to then rush enthusiastically into their office and hurl themselves into 8 seconds of world improving work. Today's world is one of fast food, fast cars, fab abs in just 3 minutes, quality time, 2 minute noodles, quick dry, quick stick, instant heat, TV life in 60 minute bursts with 3 minute advert breaks. Gratification is instant, immediate and often shallow. Aikido is of course none of these things. Training is slow, lasting and real. Aikido takes years to achieve skill; it takes patience and persistence; intense concentration, regular practice, compassion and a certain selflessness. Aikido should become a habit and habits define character. The rewards and changes Aikido brings are deep and lasting. I am not a rabid Luddite. I enjoy the comforts and advantages of modern society but I am grateful for Aikido to offset some of the increasing pressures of our society. My first Aikido Sensei, Sugano Shihan, had one of his feet amputated through problems with his diabetes, and a fairly voracious infection.

From the desk of Tom Murlowski Petitions, Projects and Campaigns I n addition to publishing The Razor Wire newspaper periodically, producing brochures, displays and keeping pertinent news and resources online, our plans and evaluations for the future begin with feedback from our members. We translate many types of communications into improved public education materials. Your input is critical. Our challenge, as more legislative support for prisoner release and enforcement reform becomes apparent, is to teach more people to be leaders for other citizens to work with locally. Good elected leaders need the support of their local community. That is where the votes to keep them office, and give them more power in office, come from. If a leader doesn't have to fear backlash and criticisms from their own community, and their citizens are behind them on a particular issue they can be more vocal in Congress. Perhaps it's a mayor you have in mind; if citizens are behind them, it makes leadership work. The same formula works to deal with bad leaders. Community support for reform should support good candidates who can defeat leaders that further injustice with bad law.

I had mascara all over my face. and the crying felt really freeing, too. nice. awesome movie. yesterday we went to helsinki with meri, met kati and ursula there and went to kaisaniemi to the concert. I really wanted to take a henna tattoo but didn't, and they were pretty expensive. damn. we bought licorice with kati. there were some finnish rappers first and they just sucked big time. uagh, seriously, the lyrics were SO BAD. then played tiktak, maija vilkkumaa and don johnson big band. the last one was really good. I started jumping and clapping too. we had a lot of fun. heini and olli came there at one point and hung around with us. the weather was great! no clouds, it was hot, and I got some tan, even on my face. we bought sorbet afterwards and sat listening to a cool exotic band on a square. I think the name was indios, they were selling cds, too, and I kind of wanted to buy one... then we came home. I watched dances with wolves . that was one loooooong movie. I couldn't believe it when I looked in the paper. 4 fricking hours. but I watched pretty much everything... although I'm not sure how it ended, haha. oh well, it was good anyways.

Educators' Forum Structuring Ratio Analysis Using the Scott Formula Introduction Although we teach accounting students that financial reports can be used to help make investment decisions, the actual mechanism for first integrating the information in financial statements and then translating the information to a buy/hold/sell decision is often left as a black box. We teach students how to interpret a ratio and whether increases in a ratio are, ceteris paribus operating and leverage components, and then explains the operating component using turnover and profit margin. Thus ROE is broken into three major elements, efficiency of operations (turnover), profit margins , and leverage Together with sales growth, the Scott formula analysis concisely captures the firms current operating and financial strengths and permits comparisons to peer firms or industry averages. One can then compare the appropriate price relative for the firm ( price/earnings, price/equity, price/sales ) to peer firms or industry averages. One can then search for firm that are ordinally out of sync. A firm with a strong operating and financial structure as indicated through the Scott formula analysis, but a low price relative compared to its peers, would appear to be a bargain, while a firm with a weak operating and financial structure, but a high price relative compared to its peers, would appear to be a over-priced. Applying the Scott Formula: The Scott formula usefully splits ROE into additive operating and leverage elements. To properly do this one must restructure the Balance Sheet to distinguish between operations and financing similar to the approach taken in weighted average cost of capital calculations, that is liabilities that arise from operations such as accounts payable or future income tax liability must be deducted from operating assets. Similarly, cash and marketable securities that are excess to operations should be removed from operating assets and netted against the financial liabilities to obtain net Financial Debt. A. A. Milne in 'The House at Pooh Corner', Roger Hargreaves in his Mister Men books, Michael Bond's 'Paddington Bear', John Burningham's 'Mr Gumpy's Motor Car', Dr Seuss's 'Green Eggs and Ham', all start sentences with 'and'. And yet again and again the children I teach protest 'You shouldn't start a sentence with an and Nothing in the National Literacy Strategy for English forbids the use of the conjunction "and" (also called a connective) at the start of a sentence. But many teachers still protest that this is wrong. So why is it that so many 20th Century writers use it? And why is it that teachers object? How is it that such a little word is so misunderstood and how can we understand it better? A look at the grammar of English is a good place to start. The word 'and' has a number of functions in English. It can join nouns in phrases such as 'salt and pepper' and it can join adverbs as in 'We were tired and hungry'. Join Us ARANYA’S STORY By Kris Copeland A conference is like a temporary community. People gather from all parts of the country and for a few days at least, they work together, play together and learn from each other. Sometimes certain people and their stories rise up and touch others very deeply. These moments are often unplanned and magical. The word for these sort of ‘happy co-incidences’ is ‘serendipity’. This is what happened when Immersion Learning participants got to meet Aranya Williams and hear some of her stories. Many people said afterward that hearing and meeting Aranya was the highlight of the conference. For those of you who weren’t there, here is a story that Aranya shared with us all, with the help of her friend Doreen Rosimos. It is about standing up for yourself and a very good example of what self-determination means. SPEECH THERAPY A dozen years ago, when Aranya was around 20 years old, she decided she needed and wanted to have speech therapy. Aranya knew it was very hard for her to speak and that it was very hard for people to understand her. Aranya went through all the proper channels. With the help of her social worker, she wrote a letter to the Medicaid administration asking for them to pay for speech therapy and then she waited for a reply. A letter finally came and it said, No, Aranya could not have speech therapy. So Aranya wrote and mailed a second letter. This also was answered with a letter of denial. Aranya did not give up. She sent a third letter. A third letter of denial was sent to Aranya. She still would not take No for an answer.
