ARTHRITIS AND RELATED DISORDERS: FIGHTING SELF-SABOTAGE Overview Faculty Web Resources Print Resources "Arthritis" is a term that refers to more than 100 different types of rheumatic diseases that affect people of all ages. In addition to causing pain in the joints and connective tissues, these diseases can also affect many other parts of the body, including the kidneys, lungs, eyes, skin, and central nervous system. Some particularly insidious forms of arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, can even cause the immune system to attack the body’s own cells. According to Dr. Fatima Mili from the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Arthritis is not a major cause of mortality like heart disease or cancer, but it has a great impact on the quality of life.” The aches and pains of rheumatic diseases often lead to secondary problems like sleep loss, fatigue, and depression—problems that can, in turn, increase the frequency and intensity of arthritis pain. This vicious cycle of symptoms makes treating arthritis even more of a challenge.

Alar Redux: Hollywood Peddles Shaky Science Once Again
by Amy Moritz Ridenour You remember the Alar Scare when Hollywood actress Meryl Streep, an environmental group peddling junk science and an irresponsibly biased interview by CBS's 60 Minutes caused panicky parents all over America to stop buying apples. Apple growers lost at least $450 million. Some families that had owned orchards for generations lost them to foreclosure. U.S. taxpayers lost at least $15 million. It was all for nothing. Brace yourself for the sequel, as Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) this week dips once again into the entertainment industry talent pool. For this production, the guest stars are talk show host Jenny Jones and actress Mary McDonough ("The Waltons"). The plot involves breast implants. The stage is a press conference at the U.S. Senate, where Senator Boxer and her allies will call for spending taxpayer dollars to once again try to find a connection between silicone breast implants and connective tissue and other diseases. "Over one million women have silicone breast implants," says Senator Boxer, making her case for diverting taxpayer monies from other projects to study silicone once again. "Thousands and thousands are ill."

"We are planning a study that will involve at least 100 Sjögren patients so we can learn more about the connection between this protein and patients' autoimmunity in preparation for possible trials of the vaccine in humans," said Dr. Arthur Bookman, a co-author of the study, coordinator of the Multicisciplinary Sjögren's Clinic at the University Health Network, and an associate professor of Medicine at U of T. Henoch-Schönlein Disease (Anaphylactoid or Allergic Purpura) Henoch-Schönlein purpura, or HSP, is an inflammation of blood vessel walls (aseptic vasculitis). It is associated with joint pain, abdominal symptoms, and kidney involvement. Its chief symptom is purpura, a pinkish to reddish-brown raised spot on the skin which begins with an itching feeling. HSP occurs most often in children, who usually notice joint and abdominal pain before purpura form. However, in adults, purpura is usually the first symptom. The characteristic purpura is painless and often occurs on the arms, legs, and buttocks. Other symptoms include bruising, abdominal pain, apathy, headache, seizures, blood in the stool, and arthritic pain in the joints. HSP may be triggered by infection (hepatitis B; ß-hemolytic Streptococcus rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (discussed below), cancer, and food products (dyes, preservatives). Treatment focuses on minimizing bleeding and may involve administration of steroids. The disorder usually ends on its own after 4 to 6 weeks, although relapses are common.

    Abstract

Connective tissue disorders - encompassing diseases of the bone, cartilage, and muscle - together afflict over 100 million people who are treatable in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan, and command a total drug market of approximately $10 billion dollars. With the rapid graying of populations in developed economies, the prevalence and medical need associated with many of these diseases will rise, as will their direct and indirect costs to society. The Outlook for Bone and Connective Tissue Disease Therapy Markets is a succinct, data-rich review of the pathophysiology, prevalence, current and emerging drugs, unmet medical need, drug sales trends, and company activities with respect to the following major diseases: osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia, as well as numerous other crippling and often fatal bone formation diseases, bone cancers, and autoimmune diseases. This timely study discusses in detail the new approaches to treating bone and connective tissue diseases and their potential impact on sales in their relevant therapeutic group.
