WASHINGTON (Reuters) An independent scientific panel weighing a possible link between autism and the mercury preservative in childhood vaccines heard suggestions on Monday that the source of the heavy metal could be fish. The Institute of Medicine panel heard the results from more than a dozen studies on thimerosal, the preservative found in some vaccines. When it last met in 2001, it decided there was no evidence that vaccines caused autism but it also noted little research had been done. "Clearly, there's far more information addressing this issue," said panel chair Dr. Marie McCormick, a professor of maternal and child health at the Harvard School of Public Health. Autism is a mysterious disorder whose symptoms range from a lack of social skills to a profound and crippling inability to relate to others.

    BC Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN)
What is Autism? Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), often referred to as autism, is a neurobiological disorder that prevents people from understanding what they see, hear or sense. ASD affects reasoning, social interaction and communication. It can affect the functioning and development of the brain and is usually evident before a child turns three years old. It is a spectrum disorder, which means there is a wide variation in how it affects children. What is BCAAN? A program of the Provincial Health Services Authority, BCAAN is responsible for assessing and diagnosing children who may have autism. The goal of BCAAN is to provide timely assessment and diagnosis within reasonable distance of the child's home. BCAAN includes specialists and health care professionals throughout BC. Assessment services are provided by each of the five geographic health authorities. BCAAN ensures the standards and guidelines set by the Ministry of Health are met, and reports to the Ministry on behalf of its health authority partners. How do I have my child assessed for autism?

Vaccine does not cause autism, panel says
    Maggie Fox Reuters
    Wednesday, 19 May 2004
Public health authorities have long used posters to encourage parents to vaccinate their kids (Image: National Library of Medicine) Neither the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine nor a mercury-based preservative used in some childhood shots cause autism, a U.S. health panel has found.
Researchers and parents trying to find out what causes autism and its possible recent upsurge should look elsewhere for a culprit, the Institute of Medicine panel said.
"The weight of that evidence is pretty substantial," said Dr Marie McCormick, an expert in child and mother health at the Harvard School of Public Health who chaired the panel.
"The overwhelming evidence from several well-designed studies indicates that childhood vaccines are not associated with autism," she added.
The same holds true for a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal which is often used in vaccines, the panel found.
In Australia, thimerosal is known as thiomersal and has almost been phased out of childhood vaccines.

    Monday 5 April 1999
Summary: A French researcher and his team have studied the pattern of autism in the population of Languedoc in France.
The word 'autism' strikes fear in the hearts of parents. They imagine a child who is going to be locked inside his or her own head and never able to interact properly with the world, much less become self-sufficient.
But in fact according to work done in France and elsewhere, that's to some extent a misleading view of the condition. But there is still a lot of controversy over whether in its milder forms, you're looking at autism or another problem altogether.
Charles Aussilloux is an authority in this field. He's Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Montpellier in the South of France, which is where I visited him.
Charles wanted to get a clear picture of the full spectrum of people with autism, how it evolves in childhood and later in life.
To do this, he and his team have studied the pattern of autism in the population of Languedoc, the region around Montpellier.
Charles Aussilloux: The evolution of autistic persons are very different, and when we see the evolution when children in their adulthood, five persons are normal existence; they are autonomous, they can have a job, they can live by themselves and they have only to have support when something bad comes in their existence.

The cause is still a medical mystery, but some progress is being made. Elizabeth Brackett of WTTW-Chicago reports. JEFF BOSCO: Zach, it's okay. ELIZABETH BRACKETT: The screams of their unhappy little boy let Tami and Jeff Bosco know that something was wrong with their child. TAMI BOSCO: Zachary was a difficult baby from the beginning, but we just wrote it off that he was a stubborn, difficult child. The pediatrician, the doctor said, "you know, every once in a while, you just get a child like that." We couldn't take him anywhere. I mean, we basically just stayed home. He was fine in his home environment, but we couldn't take him to restaurants. I would have to leave the Target or the grocery store, with things still in my cart because he would just go into a complete rage. And I could not... I couldn't control him.
