New study disputes vaccine, autism link
Critics say mercury in shots led to nervous-system problems
Story Tools RELATED Autism, vaccines: Is there a link? FDA: Thimerosal in Vaccines Pediatrics journal HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library Children's health Autism Why immunize? YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Autism Thimerosal Parenting or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Government researchers say they found little evidence of a link between vaccinations and developmental problems in a study of more than 140,000 U.S. children. The report didn't satisfy vaccine critics, who claimed the study's initial results showed a stronger connection but were watered down. They also noted that the study's lead author now works for a vaccine maker. The study, published Monday in the December issue of Pediatrics, is one of the latest attempts to determine whether older vaccines with the mercury-containing preservative thimerosal led to nervous-system problems such as autism, as some vocal critics contend. In one group of children studied, routine vaccines in infancy appeared to slightly increase the risk for tics. In another group, a slight association was seen with language delays but not tics. A third group showed no associations with any disorder.

California's autism mystery deepens

Rick Rollens suspects that vaccines may have contributed to his son Russell's autism. Story Tools
VIDEO CNN's Rusty Dornin reports the rise in autism among children in California has led to the suspicion that vaccines could be the cause (November 20)

SACRAMENTO, California (CNN) Russell Rollens was a picture-perfect baby. Then at 15 months just like every other baby he got his measles, mumps and rubella vaccination, or MMR. "He had a physical reaction to those vaccines, including a high-pitched scream and days of high pitched crying and listlessness," said Russell's father, Rick Rollens. Ten years later, those problems continue. Russell is now autistic. How does one describe what it's like parenting an autistic child? "It's a living hell," said Rollens. "For my son who suffers from the disorder, for our family members and everyone who knows and loves Russel. It's a constant struggle." And it's a struggle that most autistic kids also go through in the classroom, like the one at ABC School for Autistic Children in Sacramento where classes are full.

Report: No link between autism, vaccines
HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library Children's health RELATED Vaccines and autism YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Medical Research Science and Technology or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? WASHINGTON (AP) There is no evidence that a controversial mercury-based vaccine preservative causes autism, concludes an eagerly anticipated scientific review that says it's time to lay vaccine suspicions to rest and find the real culprit. Tuesday's conclusion by the prestigious Institute of Medicine pointed to five large studies, here and abroad, that tracked thousands of children since 2001 and found no association between autism and vaccines containing the preservative thimerosal. Many parents of autistic children blame vaccination for the brain disorder. But the panel of prominent scientists said that while high doses of mercury can cause neurological damage, there's no evidence that this type of damage causes the symptoms specific to autism and no laboratory or animal research that proves how the much smaller amounts of mercury in thimerosal could do so either, the IOM concluded. On the other hand, genetics plays a role in autism, and several studies show clear signs of prenatal onset of the disorder, including brain differences at birth, the report notes.

Story Tools RELATED Link between Autism and vaccines? California's autism mystery deepens Autism information Cure Autism Now Foundation ... Autism Society of America WHAT CAUSES AUTISM? No one knows exactly what causes Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), but scientists think that both genetic and environmental factors may play a role. We do know that parents do not cause ASDs in their children.
There is no known cure for ASDs. However, early and intensive education can help children grow and learn new skills. The goal of these programs is to reduce the symptoms of an ASD in a child. Medicines may relieve symptoms and be helpful for some children.
Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Mention autism to parents, doctors and scientists these days, and among an earful of different theories will emerge a common nod of agreement: The perplexing condition is not nearly as rare as once was thought.
