Researchers discover a gene underlying autism
WASHINGTON (AP) Scientists have long theorized that about 15 different genes play a role in who is born with the severe brain disorder autism and now they've finally found one of those genes. A study of 57 autism patients found that 40 percent carry a mutated version of the HOXA1 gene, which plays a crucial role in early brain development, University of Rochester scientists reported Monday.

U.S. developmental experts: All children should get autism checks
WASHINGTON (Reuters) All children should be routinely screened for any developmental problems, especially autism, while they are still babies, according to new guidelines released Monday. Babies diagnosed and treated early for autism, marked by social withdrawal and behavioral problems, usually do better than children who are treated later, experts at the American Academy of Neurology said.

Autism-antibiotic study sparks concern
WASHINGTON (AP) First, parents clamored for the hormone secretin in hopes it would help their autistic children. Put to the test, however, secretin is proving disappointing. Now a new theory is triggering desperate parents' interest and this time the stakes are higher because it could spur misuse of the nation's most precious antibiotic, vancomycin.

Autism by Dr Trisha Macnair and Dr Rob Hicks What is it? What are the problems? Who does autism affect? ... Related links What is it? Autism is a lifelong neuro-developmental disability that affects the way a person communicates, and severely limits their ability to relate to others in a meaningful way, develop friendships or understand other people's feelings. People with autism find it hard to make sense of the world, which appears as a chaotic maelstrom, with no clear boundaries, order or meaning to anything. Autism is often referred to as a spectrum disorder because of the variation in type and severity of problems a child may experience. Those most able to function normally within the autistic spectrum are said to have Asperger syndrome My Family and Autism Luke Jackson is 15 years old and has Asperger Syndrome. He and his family appeared in a BBC documentary

A-Z Children's Ailments
Autism and Asperger's Syndrome by Dr Trisha Macnair What is it? Symptoms Further help What is it? Autism and Asperger's Syndrome are both part of a range of disorders where a person has problems relating to, and communicating with, people around them. This group of conditions are often called 'Autistic Spectrum Disorders'. Autism is usually more severely disabling while those with Asperger's Syndrome tend to be more able to get on in normal society. What causes it? My Family and Autism Luke Jackson is 15 years old and has Asperger Syndrome. He and his family appeared in a BBC documentary My Family and Autism , broadcast at the end of July 2003. Read Luke's column about life as an autistic child. The cause of Autistic Spectrum Disorders is far from clear. Genetics play an important role - and there may be an inherited tendency - but the cause isn't straightforward. A variety of other factors, which affect brain development before, during or soon after birth, also play a part. Despite recent concern that Autism may follow MMR vaccination, there is not yet any conclusive scientific evidence to prove this. Who is affected?

Factsheet 12, for parents and teachers Autism and Asperger’s syndrome are disorders of psychological development which are due to abnormalities in the way the brain develops and functions. About three quarters of children with autism are severely affected and also suffer from general learning disabilities. Children with fewer or less severe problems may be described as having ‘autistic spectrum disorders’. Children with Asperger’s syndrome are mildly affected and usually have normal or above-average intelligence. Autism affects about 5 in 10 000 children. Many more have mild symptoms. Boys are much more commonly affected than girls. Autism normally shows itself in the first three years of life. Asperger’s syndrome is a less well-defined condition and may not be recognised until after a child starts school. What are the signs?
