Health Guides - Autism
What is autism?
Autism is one of a group of disorders often described as developmental disabilities. Other disorders in this group are mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning disorders.
Causes
Two types of causal agents have been identified - brain damage, and genetic factors and these are based on certain lines of evidence. So far, while brain lesions have increasingly been found in autistic children, no consistent pattern has emerged and children with and without lesions do not differ symptomatically. The results of many investigations have been inconclusive or unable to be generalised and these require further clarification.
High rates of social and communication deficits are found in the relatives of autistic patients. Available evidence suggests that there may have been some problems in pregnancy, or the early days of life, in children who later manifest infantile autism, but such problems are not consistent, or specific, to autism. Of these the most commonly reported are infections and injury, but others include advanced maternal age, bleeding in pregnancy, mother's medication use and infant suffering respiratory distress syndrome, among others.
Causation cannot be derived from any of these, and there is no confirmed aetiology of autism The conditions listed are just signals that the pregnancy was not optimal, however, most of these conditions do not lend themselves easily to medical intervention

Throughout their lives, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders will need to accessthe services of professionals in health care and related fields such as
http://www.pathfindersforautism.org/html/health.html
Please click on the database link to access information on service providers. Families and professionals are finding better ways to understand autism and help those who have the disorder to cope with its many symptoms. With appropriate intervention, many autistic behaviors and symptoms can be improved. Throughout their lives, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders will need to access the services of professionals in health care and related fields such as speech and occupational therapy. For your convenience, Pathfinders Autism Resource Center has grouped these services together under the heading of Health Care. When selecting a health care professional:
  • Educate yourself about what various specialties do. Identify what exactly you are looking for as closely as possible. You will waste less time and money if you know beforehand that you need, for example, an augmentative communication evaluation, rather than just speech therapy. If you are interested in finding out about medication options, try to identify the behaviors that interfere the most with your child’s daily functioning. If you need a diagnosis or are confused about what you need, request a plan of action from your diagnostic team, current physician, or therapist. If you are just beginning, you may need to ask the professionals you are about to see to help you set goals and identify methods to achieve them. Find out what diagnostic categories your insurance will cover. Often a professional has some leeway about what insurance codes to use for your child. Often autism is not covered, but medical descriptions of symptoms such as encephalopathy or dyspraxia might qualify for reimbursement.

April 20, 2004, 9:34 am Virtually every fortified cereal packet broadcasts the message that vitamin A is vital for good eyesight. But even the most gung-ho marketing manager would pause before claiming that the vitamin can dramatically improve the symptoms of autistic children by repairing damage to their retina. However, this is precisely the claim being made by an American paediatrician, who has evidence that treating these children with the right sort of vitamin A is not only highly effective but provides valuable new insights into some of the most puzzling symptoms of this disorder. Original Article: Health: Through the eyes of autism ; Visual distortions could be the cause of autistic symptoms, according to an American expert. And a simple treatment with vitamin A might be the answer. Jerome Burn Notice: The preceding article was not written by a member of the Anti-Aging Revolution . Part I of Science for Sale in the Autism Wars provides an in-depth analysis of the British Columbia Office of Health Technology Assessment (BCOHTA) report on Intensive Behavioural Treatment, also referred to as Lovaas Autism Treatment. The BCOHTA report, entitled Autism and Lovaas Treatment: a systematic review of effectiveness evidence, was produced at the request of the B.C. Ministry of Health for specific use by government lawyers in legal defense of the government in British Columbia Supreme Court. Part I details the techniques used by the BCOHTA to distort and misrepresent the state of the science in Autism treatment to discredit legitimate research underlying Intensive Behavioral Treatment pioneered by Lovaas and colleagues; as of this publication, the Lovaas protocol is the only proven treatment for the intractable disorder of Autism.

Browse all health information Autism Spectrum Disorders (Pervasive Developmental Disorders) Not until the middle of the twentieth century was there a name for a disorder that now appears to affect an estimated one of every five hundred children, a disorder that causes disruption in families and unfulfilled lives for many children. In 1943 Dr. Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital studied a group of 11 children and introduced the label early infantile autism into the English language. At the same time a German scientist, Dr. Hans Asperger, described a milder form of the disorder that became known as Asperger syndrome. Thus these two disorders were described and are today listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR (fourth edition, text revision)

You are in: Brain and Nervous System Autism Overview Autism is not a disease, a mental illness, or a behavior problem. It is a complex disorder of the central nervous system that affects many different expressions of brain development, including social interactions and communications. Most people with autism have problems communicating, forming relationships, and interpreting and responding to the external world. Autism begins in early childhood. The signs and symptoms of autism may become apparent by the time the child reaches the age of 18 months, and they almost always become apparent by the time the child is 3 years old. Autism persists throughout the person's lifetime, although many people are able to learn to control their behavior to some extent. Autism occurs at all intelligence levels. Although about 75% of autistic individuals have an intelligence quotient (IQ) below average, the other 25% have average or above average intelligence. About 10% have high intelligence in a specific area such as mathematics.

When Stacey went over to her new friend Chelsea's house, she met Chelsea's 4-year-old brother, Shawn. "Hi," said Stacey, smiling. Shawn glanced at her and said nothing. Then he turned back to a toy he was holding. Later, in Chelsea's room, Stacey said, "I don't think your brother likes me." "It's not that," explained Chelsea. "Shawn just has trouble responding to other people. He has autism." Of course, Stacey wanted to know what autism meant, what causes autism, what it's like to have autism, and more. Keep reading to learn the answers to Stacey's questions. What Does Autism Mean?
Autism (say: awe -ti-zum) is a kind of brain disorder that causes kids to experience the world differently from the way most other kids do. Those differences make it hard for kids with autism to communicate with others and react to things going on around them in the usual ways. When someone smiles, for instance, a kid without autism knows that the smiling person is happy or being friendly. Kids with autism, however, have trouble connecting a person's gestures - such as a smile or frown - with the person's feelings. It's difficult, too, for kids with autism to link words with their meanings. Imagine trying to talk with someone or learn from a teacher if you couldn't make sense of their words and gestures and couldn't come up with the right words to express your own thoughts! Autism also creates a confusing world of senses. Quiet sounds may be loud and distracting to a kid with autism. A sudden noise could be terrifying. A person's touch might set off a wave of strong sensations - like when a chill gives you the shivers, but much worse.

by Michael D. Powers Advertisement The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) and the Autism Research Institute (ARI) are calling on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to launch a public-private collaborative effort to investigate the possible relationship between vaccines and the autism epidemic in Brick Township, N.J., documented in a report released by the Centers for Disease Control last Tuesday, as well as the nationwide autism epidemic highlighted in congressional hearings on April 6. Both NVIC and ARI represent families, many with children who developed normally until given routine vaccinations. Barbara Loe Fisher, co-founder and president of NVIC, said "The CDC was asked publicly at a meeting with parents in Brick Township two years ago to look at the role vaccines may have played in the children's autism. The CDC did not do it. Parents want independent, non-government researchers to be involved in the Brick investigation and in any study of the national autism epidemic discussed in congressional hearings earlier this month so that parents can have confidence in the outcome."
