Guidelines for Author Biographies
Please adhere to the following guidelines when you create a biographical sketch to accompany your article.
  • Photo Submit a high-quality JPEG photo of yourself to accompany the biographical text. The photo should be at least 300 pixels on all sides; our preferred size is 300 (width) x 450 (height) pixels. Photos should not have borders or other decorations. We prefer not to use casual snapshots. Self-reflexive references Use third person to refer to yourself. Do not use first person at any point. Identify yourself by full name at the beginning of the sketch. Thereafter, identify yourself by last name only or with a personal pronoun. Avoid nicknames and titles (e.g., "Dr.") throughout. Academic degrees If you abbreviate a degree, use capitals and omit internal periods (e.g., PhD, MA, BS). If you refer to a degree generically, use lowercase for it as well as the field of study (e.g., "earned a master's degree in education," "received a doctorate in economics"). Note that "master's degree" and "bachelor's degree" should contain an apostrophe. The most immediately recognizable degree acronyms are BA, BS, MA, MS, PhD, and EdD. If you mention a different degree, provide the full name and use capital letters (e.g., Master of Social Work), or refer to it generically (e.g., "earned a master's degree in social work").

    Biographies of Authors
There are many sets of literary dictionaries and encyclopedias devoted to author biographies, and we will discuss two of the most common of these. First though, we should review other sources of general biographical information where authors, as well as people in other fields, can be found. You have already studied such sources as WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA and WEBSTER'S BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY . These are excellent places to look for authors, too, although the amount of material you find may not be as extensive as in specialized sources. General encyclopedias can be very useful for well-known authors, and of course, you should not overlook READERS' GUIDE . Remember that ESSAY AND GENERAL LITERATURE INDEX is valuable in finding biographies. One of the most common sources devoted to authors is the "Authors Series" edited by Stanley Kunitz and published by Wilson. Among the titles included are TWENTIETH CENTURY AUTHORS EUROPEAN AUTHORS 1000-1900 AMERICAN AUTHORS 1600-1900 and BRITISH AUTHORS OF THE 19TH CENTURY . There are others in the series as well, and you should become familiar with the ones your library has. There is generally about a page on each author with a small photograph. The style is lively and interpretive, which is one reason these have become so standard. The main drawback is that they include only the most famous authors, and the set is not current for very contemporary writers. A short bibliography appears with each entry. A more comprehensive source, but one not to be found in all libraries because of the expense, is

(with Susan Kitchens) Not just another author, this native of Austin, Texas is an editor and producer at Peachpit, where he compiles and tests most of the CD-ROMs you'll find in the back of our books (as well as the DVD-ROM in Making iMovies ) and checks manuscripts for technical accuracy. He also shares his knowledge of Mac lore in more general ways, alerting his colleagues to future directions in personal computer technology and helping them when their Macs are Sad. In a previous life, Victor was a geologist, spending his days searching for geothermal energy beneath the Gulf Coast. When he realized that this bored him silly, he began a second career, in music, earning a master's in musicology from the University of California, Berkeley. These days, he balances his duties at Peachpit with choral conducting, harpsichord tuning, and being a dad to Emma.

If you don't find a biography here and know of one, please send it along. If there is no biography available, write one and send it along. It will take time for this page to become one of substance. Dr. Whitney's "dead German" assignment gave me inspiration for this page. She also taught me HTML. She may have created a monster. Last revised: August 17, 2002.
