Chapter 1: Thinking
From My American Journey by Colin Powell (p. 11)
Colin Luther Powell (1937- )
Born in 1937 in New York City, Colin Powell graduated from the City College of New York (CCNY) with a B.S. in Geology. Active in ROTC at CCNY, he was commissioned an Army second lieutenant upon graduation in June 1958. Powell later earned an M.B.A. from George Washington University. He served in the U.S. Army for thirty-five years, rising to the rank of four-star general and serving as the first African American Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from1989 to 1993. Powell was influential in planning U.S. strategy during the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and retired from the U.S. Army in 1993.
Powell received several military awards, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit Award, and the Secretary's Award. His civilian awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. Several schools and institutions have been named in his honor, and he holds honorary degrees from universities and colleges across the country. Chapter 10: Constructing Arguments
"Drugs" by Gore Vidal (p. 456)
Gore Vidal (1925- )
Born Eugene Luther, Jr., in West Point, New York, Vidal is a prolific writer, publishing his first novel, Williwaw (1946), at age 19. Subsequent works included the satirical comedies Myra Breckenridge (1968) and Duluth (1983); biographies and historical fiction Burr (1973), 1876 (1976), Lincoln (1984), and Empire (1987); and short stories, essays (including Homage to Daniel Shays: Collected Essays, 1968), plays, film scripts, political commentary, and his memoir, Screening History (1992).
He has twice run for political office as a Democrat and co-founded the New Party in the late 1960s. He has served on the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts and has been an abrasive, provocative television host. Vidal is noted for his sarcastic take on what he claims are the three great modern tragedies: Western civilization's abandonment of paganism for Judeo-Christianity; the circus of hypocrisy better known as American politics; and the popular macho sexuality pervasive in American pop culture.
"The Case for Slavery" by A.M. Rosenthal (p. 457)

These would satisfy the requirements of classes where basic author information is required. For very detailed author and literary analyses, go to the web page Guide to Literary Criticism. Anton Chekhov
Chekhov was born on January 17, 1860, in Taganrog, a small seaport in southern Russia. He was the third son in a family of five boys and one girl. His mother was the daughter of a textile merchant; his father owned a general store that stayed open from 5:00 AM to midnight. The Chekhovs' children all worked in the shop from an early age. When Chekhov was 16, his father went bankrupt. The family fled to Moscow, leaving Anton behind to finish school and tutor the son of his father's creditor. He lived on his own for three years, sending money to his mother. In 1879, Chekhov rejoined his family and entered medical school at Moscow University. To support his impoverished family, he began writing short comic sketches and "little stories" for humor magazines, using silly pen names. Chekhov graduated from medical school in 1884 and entered into general practice in Moscow. He continued to write his "frivolous tales." That year he also began experiencing the early symptoms of tuberculosis. In 1885, Chekhov achieved his first serious literary success with his story "The Huntsman." He also met Alexei Suvorin, the rich owner of Russia's leading newspaper, who became Chekhov's patron and close friend. Suvorin encouraged him to write longer, more sophisticated fiction and to publish his work under his own name. By 1888, Chekhov was a literary celebrity. He had published two collections of stories, won the prestigious Pushkin Prize, and had his first play

    John Smith
John Smith was a leader in the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, the first successful English colony in America. He was also one of England's most famous New World explorers. The stories of his adventures, often embellished by his own pen, fascinated European readers of his day and continue to provide a wealth of details about the early exploration and colonization of America. The son of a farmer, Smith was born in Lincolnshire, England. He left home at the age of 16 to become a soldier. During the next ten years, Smith traveled throughout Europe and the Near East, fought in numerous battles, and was promoted to captain. Then, in 1606, a year after his return to England, Smith led a group of colonists across the Atlantic to establish a settlement in the New World. The group landed in Virginia in 1607 and founded Jamestown. As president of the colony from 1608 to 1609, Smith helped assure the colony's success, obtaining food, enforcing discipline, and dealing with the native tribes who inhabited the region. In 1608, Smith published A True Relation of Virginia

His most recent show, Time and Wind , played at the John Houseman Studio Theatre in New York City to sold-out crowds, and is being recorded on CD. MacDermot's work spans the gamut of performing arts, creating a rich tapestry of musicals (The Human Comedy, Steel), ballet scores (Salome), film scores (Cotton Comes To Harlem, Fortune and Mans Eyes, Mistress), chamber music (Wind Quintet), the Anglican Liturgy , poetry (Thomas Hardy) and drama accompaniments ("The Sun Always Shines For The Cool," "The Shooting of Dan McGrew") and band repertory. He draws inspiration from a wealth of musical scores, crossing the boundaries of jazz, folk, gospel, reggae, and classical styles. MacDermot's background is as uniquely diverse as his music. The son of a Canadian diplomat, he was born and raised in Montreal. After attending Bishop's University, he received a more extensive musical education at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and then moved to New York in 1964. Three years later, MacDermot wrote the music for the landmark Broadway production, HAIR , which he later adapted for the screen.

Darlene Arden : Angell Memorial Animal Hospital is world famous and a pioneer in the area of Wellness for dogs and cats. Usually in medicine, things start with research in dogs and then it's used on humans. This was just the opposite. Wellness programs have long been recognized as beneficial to humans, it's so much easier to maintain health and either prevent a problem or catch it early while it's easier to treat. The concept moved to companion animals.
Angell's experts reviewed everything in the book.

Cindy Vallar Lochiel’s decision to support an uprising doomed to failure and Clan Gregor’s survival in spite of its outlawry inspired me to write "The Scottish Thistle". BigBookSavings : You had a somewhat bumpy road on the way to getting "The Scottish Thistle” published. Tell us what happened.
Cindy Vallar So, I turned to the world of electronic publishing. E-publishers are more amenable to publishing novels that cross genres. "The Scottish Thistle" is historical fiction, but it's also romance. Yet it's not traditional romance because I emphasize history over love. E-publishers prefer to receive queries directly from authors rather than agents. They also accept historical novels. After researching various e-publishers and their products, I submitted to Pulsar Books and was delighted when they offered me a contract.

He is involved in research and development of new products and of new nutritional strategies for both human and animal nutrition. His general research interest is the function of various food components and their impact upon health, growth and environment. Particular interests are in the safety of foods of animal origin, and in developing a nutritional approach to health maintenance and disease avoidance. He introduced the concept of bioactive food components or nutricines, important in both health and nutrition, and subsequently developed Total Nutrition as a strategy for the production of food of animal origin where nutrition contributes to health as well as growth and performance of animals. This is of particular importance where a reduction in use of antibiotics in animal production is required. Nutricines
