WHY ESSAY TUTORIALS?
In week six there will be small group tutorials designed to help you prepare the coursework essays on which the assessment for this unit is based. Besides discussing the titles set for the essay topics and methods of researching for this particular task, we shall particularly consider how to structure a history essay. In the tutorial we will discuss the good and less good points of three coursework essays written by (anonymous!) students who have taken this unit in previous years. By this point in the unit, you should have enough knowledge of the historical period to make firm judgements about the quality of the different essays. It is essential that you read each of the essays (all answers to the same question) before the tutorial. Consider which mark you would give each of these essays - and why. After the tutorial you should have enough time to reconsider your own essay and to tweak it if necessary before you hand it in.

Leonberger History Austria Everybody has of course heard of the Austrian Empress "Sissy"
who is said to have owned 7 Leonberger dogs. But even if Empress "Sissy" was surely the most famous
Austrian Leoowner, the Austrian History is more than that.
This is out of the "Kynologisches Jahrbuch 1898" Austria;
the article refers to dog-breeding in generally. This article refers to Leonberger breeding - 1908 - 1913 -
in Germany, Austria and Böhmen
(which belongs today to Poland / Czechy) Breeding must have taken place in Austria end of the 19th century
(maybe earlier) as in the Leonberger Chronik several
Leo's listed by name - and this list is out of the magazine
"Hundesport & Jagd", dated Aug. 19, 1897.
Especially the Leo Abdel Rigo Austria is most likely an Austria Leo. One of the old "Leonberger" magazines reported about the dog show Vienna 1911. 7 Leonberger dogs out of the breeding from Baronin Pfungen, Gars, Niederösterreich; attended that show.

Austrian History Yearbook Frank, Tibor. From Habsburg Agent to Victorian Scholar: G. G. Zerifi, 1820-1892. Christopher Sullivan and Tibor Frank, trans. Atlantic Studies on Society and Change, vol. 105. Boulder: Social Science Monographs, 2000. Pp. 469. Summer is a perfect time for relaxation, to indulge in light reading such as romance, mystery, or spy stories. With this in mind I accepted the request of the book review editor of the Austrian Histony Yearbook to review a study on the life G. G. Zerffi, spy, journalist, and scholar. Gusztav Zerffi was born in 1820 in Buda. His father, a German Jewish physician, editor, and writer emigrated from Germany to Hungary. The family converted to Catholicism and so Gusztav was christened. At age nineteen, Gusztaiv was working as an actor in Vienna. In 1844, he moved to Pressburg (Pozsony, today Bratislava) and took up journalism. His works, soon published in Leipzig and (Buda)Pest, showed the definitely liberal stance of the author, although he considered Louis Kossuth a charlatan. Zerffi's early rejection of Kossuth might be one of the clues to his complete change of political loyalties in 1849, a clue that Professor Frank does not take into consideration. From 1846, Zerffi worked in Pest, writing both in German and in Hungarian. He contributed to the opposition paper but also published newspapers of his own, namely the

A USTRIAN H ISTORY
by Claire Antoszewski
Early History
House of Babenberg
By 1156 Austria had become a duchy under the Babenbergs and flourished both economically and culturally. During the House of Babenberg (976-1246) the foundations of Melk, Göttweig, Klosterneuberg and other famous sites were layed. In 1278, the Bohemian King Ottokar, who had imposed his rule after the last of the Babenbergs, Frederick the Warrior, was killed, was defeated by Rudolph I of Habsburg who had become King of Germany in 1273. So began the Habsburg rule of Austria which continued until 1918.
Habsburg Dynasty
War with France broke out in 1792 and continued sporadically until 1815. One of the results of the Napoleonic Wars was the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, whose crown had been in the Hapsburg family for nearly 4 centuries. In October 1814, 215 European heads of state met in Vienna to figure out a balance of power after the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire. What came to be known as the Vienna Congress, lasted nine months and not a shilling was spared on entertaining the guests.
Emperor Franz Joseph I
World War I and II
In the assassination of Ferdinand and its repercutions, Europe found its excuse to wage the war which had been brewing for some time. World War I was the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Under the peace settlement of 1919, the Treaty of Saint-Germain, the new Austrian state emerged with a population of only 7 million and was geographically the size it is today. The loss of so much territory and therefore economic prosperity combined with political tensions eventually left space for the outlawed Nazis to take over Austria. In 1938, Austrian born Adolf Hitler annexed Austria. Austria, as a part of German Third Reich, fought with the Axis in World War II and Vienna suffered heavy Allied bombing. Austria´s involvement in the Holocaust is a sad and painful chapter of history and one which is still being unravelled.

The term Habsburg Empire is to be understood as the complex of territories ruled by the Habsburg Dynasty. As such, it has been phrased by modern historians and does not appear in historical documents; it is not to be confused with the Holy Roman Empire , often simply referred to as the Empire , in which the influence of the Habsburg Emperors was rather limited.
In 1806 the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved and Francis I. assumed the title "Emperor of Austria" which was applied to the entirety of his territorial possessions. Since the Compromise of 1867, the expression "Austria-Hungary" was used; the files listed below, from 1867 on, for domestic policy, the economy and intellectual life, refer to the Austrian half of Austria-Hungary, also referred to as Cisleithania.
