Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Neutrality, once ingrained as part of the Austrian cultural identity, has been called into question since the Soviet collapse and Austria's increasingly prominent role in European affairs. The Landscape, Climate, Vegetation, and Fauna of Austria
Austria is located in southern Central Europe and stretches from the eastern Alps (covering almost two thirds of its surface area) as far as the Danube Region. Austria's total area is 83,858 sq. km. Given its location, Austria has always been a cross-roads on the lines of communication between the major European economic and cultural regions. Austria has common borders with eight other countries, namely Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. This European core-land includes a wide variety of landscapes, climatic conditions and flora. Austria's landscapes range from high and low mountainous regions to hilly country and plains. The foothills of the Alps and the Carpathian mountains, the Vienna basin, and the Austrian part of the Pannonian plains in the east are the major urban areas and economic centres. Austria's highest mountain is the Grossglockner with 3,797 metres. The longest river is the Danube, flowing some 350 kilometres through Austrian territory.

Geography
Austria - a small country with an area of 83.84 square kilometers (32.274 square miles) and 8.1 million inhabitants - is situated in the very heart of Europe. With no immediate access to the sea, Austria shares its borders with eight countries: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. Due to this geographical position and out of a historical role as a link between the Orient and the Occident, Austria has successfully established its role as a stabilizing political factor in Central Europe and as a turn-table of East-West trade. Important international organizations, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) have chosen Vienna, Austria's capital, as their headquarters.
Constitution
The capital, Vienna, is one of the nine provinces.
