Austrian Cultural Forum Prize The Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota announces the current Prize Competition to identify the best recent monograph and Ph.D. dissertation written by North American citizens or permanent residents in any discipline regarding contemporary Austria or the history of Austria and the pre-1919 Habsburg lands of central and eastern Europe. The Austrian Cultural Forum in New York funds the prizes. The purpose of the biennial competition is to encourage North American scholars in the full range of academic disciplines to do research in the field of Austrian and Habsburg studies. Format change: The leadership of the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York and the CAS have decided to award the prizes henceforth every two years in order to simplify the processes of submitting the books and dissertations and judging the submissions. In recent years it was becoming increasingly difficult to draw a clear line between the two categories of "cultural studies" and "historical and contemporary studies" which were considered in alternate years. Working on a two-year cycle for all books and dissertations published or defended in the biennium will also smooth out the sharp variations in the numbers of submissions which were experienced when the prizes were awarded annually in one or the other disciplinary category. To avoid excluding books and dissertations in fields of cultural studies which were published or defended between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2001 from ever being considered for the ACF prizes, such books and dissertations from 2001 may be submitted for this competition.

Austrian Cultural Forum Considered by Michael J. Crosbie To much fanfare and critical acclaim, the Austrian Cultural Forum tower in midtown Manhattan opened in April 2002 with a crush of visitors and curious onlookers. Even a small gathering at New York City's newest building would have been a crowded experience. At only 25 feet (7.6 meters) wide, the Austrian Cultural Forum recalls the "sliver building" craze of the 1980s and 90s, when developers in New York raced to raise emaciated towers on sites formerly occupied by lower structures not much wider than a townhouse. Designed by architecture professor, architect, and theorist Raimund Abraham, who has taught at Cooper Union for the past 30 years, the ACF exhibits both the "thrills and spills" of buildings on such narrow sites. Outside, the Thrills The thrills are evident the minute you turn the corner at Fifth Avenue and start heading east on 52nd Street. Before you a totem rises, calling into question everything around it. Because of its modest footprint, and because it is surrounded by buildings at least as tall if not taller, the ACF tower is all the more powerful, as it breaks ranks with its humdrum neighbors. Georg Pendl and Elisabeth Senn (3rd place): Not a traditional display window like the fashion shop next door. Not a beautifully designed culture shop, but a sober hall for multifunctional use, exhibition room, cinema and video space together. Transparency is advertising, or the contrary - and hence a challenge for those in charge. For the shy ones - the second plane made of special glass serves as a veil. The glass panel is the permitted silhouette, creates visibility along the ideal street line, is also a wall for displaying information and exhibits. On the window panel free urban space - administration and service structures in an amorphous cube - urban furniture - color for recognizability. Way up on the top the books - cultural concentrate without sugar coating. Jury's comments: An audacious minimalist composition particularly in respect of the height and asymmetrical positioning of the blue wall in relation to the canted form of the red tower. Some doubts were expressed...to the undue grandeur of the four story open-air lobby particularly since this seems to have had the effect of restricting the overall area of the building. Culture
Austria's hills are alive with the sound of music. Composers throughout Europe were drawn to the country in the 18th and 19th centuries by the generous patronage of the Habsburgs. During this period Vienna became to classical music what Seattle is to grunge. In fact many of the Habsburgs were themselves gifted musicians and would, history allowing, have made a funky quartet consisting of Leopold I (composer), Charles VI (violin), Maria Theresa (double bass) and Joseph II (harpsichord and cello). Back in the real world, at various times Beethoven, Brahms, Gluck, Hayden, Mahler, Mozart, Schubert, Sch¶nberg and the Strausses all had their heads in the clouds and their bums on piano stools in Vienna. Today, institutions such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the angelic Vienna Boys' Choir, the Staatsoper (State Opera), the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus are unrivalled. Traditional Austrian food is stodgy, hearty fare of the meat-and-dumpling variety. Wiener Schnitzel is Vienna's best known culinary concoction and it has spread to every two-bit eating house from New York City to Alice Springs. It's a fried cutlet, usually veal, covered in a coating of egg and breadcrumbs and, when cooked properly, has actually been known to be edible. Austrians are fond of eating bits of beasts that other nations ignore.
