The Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs will open its new Austrian Cultural Forum Tower in midtown Manhattan on Apr. 18. Twenty-four stories tall, but only 25 feet wide and 100 feet deep, the structure, designed by Austrian-born New York architect Raimund Abraham, totals some 30,000 square feet. Located at 52nd Street near Fifth Avenue, the building will house the organization's offices as well as spaces for temporary exhibitions of Austrian art. The building also includes a library, theater, classrooms, a multi-level residence for the Forum's director and an open-air loggia at the tower's top. Cultural Forum director Christoph Thun-Hohenstein plans a diverse program highlighting Austrian culture past and present. Among the inaugural displays is a commissioned work by the Vienna-based new media artists Granular Synthesis.

Serbian Culture Minister Branislav Lecic
Belgrade, April 19 (Tanjug) - Serbian Culture Minister Branislav Lecic opened Thursday evening " Days of Viennese culture in Belgrade", which started by the opening of the Austrian Library in one of the several buildings belonging to the Medical School of the University of Belgrade in Deligradska Street. During the festivity, Vienna and Austrian culture will be presented in a series of cultural events by May 5. " After great efforts of Serbian people to enter the field of peace and democracy we now have an opportunity to participate in a new age when Serbia builds brick by brick its democratic edifice", Lecic said. " Culture is nothing else but exchange and contact with other peoples and nations. We have been imprisoned for too long and therefore I, as Culture Minister, don' t want that claustrophobia time to happen to my people ever again ," he said. Secretary General of the Austrian Foreign Ministry Albert Rohan said that October 5 of the last year was good day for Serbia and Europe, because on that day Serbian people put an end to Milosevic's rule peacefully.

CALL FOR PAPERS Baupläne für Zwischenräume / Blueprints for No-Man's Land Connections in Contemporary Austrian Culture University of Aberdeen, 14-17 September 2000 Künstlerische Forschung und Experiment sind ... ebenso wichtig wie die Produktion von Kunst (Peter Weibl) This interdisciplinary conference will investigate the connections between different forms of cultural production and representation in present-day Austria. It has two interrelated aims: first, to facilitate interaction between theorists and practitioners with an interest in contemporary Austrian culture and second, to explore areas of overlap between various forms of cultural representation in contemporary Austrian culture. The conference will be accompanied by literary readings, an art exhibition, and a theatre performance. These 'accompanying events' will form an integral part of the conference, while also presenting aspects of Austrian culture to a wider non-academic audience. Among those who have expressed an interest in contributing are Manfred Erjautz, Veronika Dreier, Theater im Bahnhof (Graz). Utilising as a central motif a model of the cultural sphere as city, divided into distinct, but overlapping areas through which theorists and practitioners circulate, we are seeking papers which explore the nature of the 'Zwischenräume' between different forms of representation. Papers should address the connections (historical, existing, potential and missed) between various cultural spheres such as: * literature * art * architecture * music * film * theatre and cabaret In each case, we are interested in both 'high' and 'low' culture, as well as in works which subvert this distinction.

AUSTRIAN CULTURE: FILM
It all started so well in the era of silent film with Carl Mayer thinking up the script for expressionist nightmare 'Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' realized by German director Fritz Murnau. Viennese born MGM star Hedy Lamarr took a giant step to fame by posing as the first nude women of film history. After several box office hits (among them color film 'Samson and Delilah') she retreated from public live only to surprise the world by inventing a device to remote controll tropedoes by frequence hopping during World War II.

Description: The turn of the twentieth century in Germany and Austria was a highly troubled time and a highly creative one. People faced upheaval, change, confusion, and ambiguity in almost all areas of their lives – geography, politics, economics, technology, medicine, identity, and sexuality. Anti-Semitism and misogyny, for example, were simply a part of life and coexisted with Zionism and an active Women's Movement. Everyday concerns with such issues, as well as with the worker’s movement, increasing industrialization, and nationalism, are reflected in the artistic products of the time in ambivalent and complicated ways that we will describe and discuss. Art, literature, philosophy, music, architecture, and film not only reflected the thrills and trials of social, political, and cultural change but they themselves were also undergoing radical changes from within in genre and form.

    Introduction
The Republic of Austria is made up of 9 (federal provinces). The total land area of 83,335 sq. km. is inhabited by 7.8 million people (1993). In 1981, 67 per cent of the population lived in towns, while the Province of Vienna was 100 per cent urbanized. Lower levels of administration include Bezirks (districts) and local communities. For more than seven centuries (1273-1918) Austria was ruled by archdukes, emperors (including an empress) and kings. The First Republic lasted from 1918 until Anschluss in 1938. The basis for the Second Republic is laid out in the federal constitution of 1920, the State Treaty of Vienna and the Constitutional Law on Permanent Neutrality. The Constitution provides for a parliamentary democracy.
    General Directions of Cultural Policy
Austria belongs among nations whose identity is significantly determined by culture. Furthermore, it stands at the edge of a dominant economic and linguistic area, which necessarily makes its cultural policy the policy of identity and its culture the central factor in identifying positive national awareness.

    http://www.jsrussellwriter.com/austrianculturalforum.html
The Brooding, Needlelike Form of the Austrian Cultural Forum Has Been Heroically Conceived and Intricately Detailed by Raimund Abraham Architectural Record, August 2002 Twenty-four stories is not very high in Midtown Manhattan terms, but even the most preoccupied walker on East 52nd Street would be unlikely to miss the Austrian Cultural Forum, though it is dwarfed by far larger, bulkier neighbors. What first grabs attention is a five-story-high, sphynxlike form that juts toward the street. It projects out of suspended layers of sloping glass, which overlap each other sharp as knife edges. This needlelike tower, a mere 25 feet wide, draws the eye to its solid top, which is carved with mysterious, totemic slots. Most remarkably, the architect, Raimund Abraham, has stretched a mere 30,000 square feet over a dizzying 280-foot height. Creating usable, if small floor plates freed Abraham to deploy daylight more theatrically. A large skylight lures the visitor out of the lobby, past the stainless-steel elevator enclosure and up a short stair to a mezzanine gallery space. Throughout, double height spaces and the modeling of the south elevation throw surprising stripes of light and unexpected shadows into the building. This metaphorical armament seems to be as much about Abraham as it is about architecture or the aspirations of the Forum. Resistance is a way of life for Abraham, according to colleagues, and it spills into his architectural approach. Materiality is his chosen medium because he envisions truth being derived from the very fabric of architecture. The diagonal braces behind the glass façade take the place of conventional lateral supports, which usually lie invisible behind opaque spandrels. Here their pistonlike quality expresses resistance to a metaphorical as well as literal compression emanating from the comparatively large bulk of the buildings on either side.

    Preface: Bruckner and Wagner
Comparison is often made of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) . Is Bruckner "Wagnerian"? Here are some of my observations: The "meaning" of Bruckner's music lies in the symphonic form of purely instrumental music. Bruckner's language is the magnificent and glorious sound of brass, timpani and the songs of the birds expressed so serenely and sadly by the tone of the winds. The musical note itself speaks the language of depth. However, one of the most significant "meanings" of Wagner's music is its narrative(i.e. story drama) and symbols(e.g. leitmotifs) of myth(e.g. Der Ring Des Niebelungen often called Ring). Musical leitmotifs connects the musical theme with symbolic concepts, characters and objects(e.g. love, Brunnhilde, gold).
