Saturday, February 7, 2004 SYDNEY, Australia (AFP): A Guadeloupe-born suspected terrorist deported from Australia to France last year was sent to Sydney by Pakistani militants to attack military sites in Australia, a senior French intelligence officer was quoted as saying Friday. Back pain in Australian military helicopter pilots: a preliminary study

Abstract
Background: Several studies have highlighted the problem of back pain among helicopter pilots, but few have controlled for potential confounding factors in their analyses, or sought to examine the effects of back pain on operational readiness and flying performance. There have been no previous studies of the prevalence of back pain among Australian military pilots. Methods: The prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of low back pain were assessed in a cross-sectional survey of 200 Australian military helicopter pilots by self-completion questionnaire. Results: Responses were received from 131 (66%) of available pilots. The overall prevalence of reported back pain was 64% (95% CI 56%-72%), with a further 28% of pilots describing back discomfort while flying. More than half the pilots (55%) indicated that back pain had interfered with their concentration while flying, with 16% reporting that they had hurried flying missions because of pain. A minority of pilots (7%) had refused to fly because of back problems. After adjusting for age, education, BMI, posture and numbers of hours flown, multiple logistic regression modeling indicated that a prior history of back injury was the most significant predictor of back pain among rotary wing pilots (OR 2.63, 95% CI 1.11-6.23). Conclusions: We conclude that the prevalence of back pain in Australian military helicopter pilots is unacceptably high and may be limiting operational readiness, pilot performance, flying safety, and pilot health. Urgent attention needs to be given to improved ergonomic design in aircraft, and both back pain prevention and back injury rehabilitation programs.

Military base blasts, three dead
From correspondents in Kiev, Ukraine
May 07, 2004 AT least three people were killed last night in a series of powerful explosions at a Ukranian military base that forced the evacuation of thousands of locals.
Officials earlier said four people had died, but the regional hospital later told Russia's Interfax news agency there were three killed and two others injured in the blasts, which took place near the village of Novobogdanovka, in Ukraine's southeastern Zaporozhye region. Ukraine's head of the army chief of staff, Alexander Zatynaiko, said on UT-1 public television that no military personnel had died in the explosions. He said the security services and the public prosecutor would launch an inquiry into the exact causes of the incident.

Australian observers to join US on pre-war games in the Gulf
By Marian Wilkinson, Herald Correspondent in Washington December 7 2002 Australian military observers will join a massive United States military exercise in the Persian Gulf state of Qatar to test command systems that would be used in a war with Iraq. The classified exercise, Internal Look, begins on Monday and Australia's inclusion points to expectations it will take part in any US-led war. The head of the Australian defence staff in Washington, Major-General Simon Willis, confirmed that Australian officers were expected in Qatar, likely to be a nerve centre for any war. They will join General Tommy Franks, the senior US commander responsible for the Middle East, the Gulf and Afghanistan, who would run the war. The Australians are usually attached to US Central Command headquarters in Florida, which released details on the exercise this week. ");document.write("

Australia's Military Involvement in the Vietnam War
Brian Ross
This article is intended to provide an overview of Australian military operations in Vietnam, commencing from the deployment of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in 1962 until 1969, when Australian forces began withdrawing, consistent with the Nixon Doctrine of phased withdrawal from the mainland of Asia and the policy of Vietnamization.
Australian Army Training Team Vietnam
Australia's initial commitment to supporting the American stance in Vietnam consisted of the deployment of a team of military advisers. On 26th July, 1962, the Minister for Defence announced Australia's intention to send 30 instructors to the Republic of Vietnam, 4 going to the Military Aid Council Vietnam (MACV) Headquarters in Saigon, 22 to regional locations in the Hue area and 4 to Duc My.(1) This team would be headed by Colonel F.P. Serong, previously the Commanding Officer at the Jungle Training Centre, Canungra, Queensland and would fall under the command of the Australian Army Forces, Far Eastern Landing Forces Headquarters in Singapore.(2) The AATTV arrived in the Republic of Viet Nam in August, 1962. AATTV advisers served with ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) units, including infantry, artillery and armoured divisions, independent regiments in the I Corps area (the northern province of RVN),regional and provincial headquarters, the Viet Nam Police Field Force, US Special Forces, Montegnard Special Forces and CIA operations.(3) with the escalation of Australian forces in Vietnam in 1966, Australian advisers also served with 1 Australian Task Force (1ATF) at Nui Dat.
