Brief History of Australian Military Law Reference: DFDA (Defence Force Discipline Act) Volume 1, 2001 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 101. As old as armies and navies is the idea of a special discipline and a special body of law applicable to the armed forces, usually taking the form of a curtailment or abolition of such rights as the soldier would have had as a citizen. In Roman times the foundation of military law was complete subjection of the soldier to the will of the commander. The harshness of this system is apparent from the following description by the Roman scholar Cicero: "The general was at liberty to behead any man serving in his camp and to scourge with rods the staff officer as well as the common soldier; nor were such punishments inflicted merely on account of common crimes, but also when an officer had allowed himself to deviate from the orders which he had received or when a division had allowed itself to be surprised or had fled from field of battle" 1 102. The harshness of military discipline in the Middle Ages is illustrated by reference to the Ordnances of King Richard I of England. For example, "whoever shall commit murder aboard ship shall be tied to the corpse and thrown into the sea: if ... on land ... tied to the corpse and buried alive or ... if a robber be convicted, boiling pitch shall be poured over his head and a shower of feathers be

On the Warpath
An Anthology of Australian Military Travel
Robin Gerster and Peter Pierce (eds)
Download a sample chapter of On the Warpath (pdf, 102 KB) This important anthology reveals the many ways in which going to war has formed a cultural bridge between Australia and the world.
Opinion
'This first-rate collection, with both a general introduction and introductions to each section, documents that we indeed were there, in all our tempers and guises, nobly and ignobly.' (Age, 3/4/2004) 'An anthology of Australian war writings collects the witty and the poignant.' (The Bulletin, 6/4/2004)
About this Title
'Between them, Robin Gerster and Peter Pierce are authorities on travel, war and literature. Their formidable talents are splendidly combined in this brilliantly conceived collection, which memorably evokes the pathos, humour, high drama, farce and tragedy of the "warpath".'
Brian Matthews On the Warpath presents dispatches from arenas of war, told by men andunusually women, of Australia's military forces, that are sometimes terrible, often politically incorrect, but always compelling. Vivid reporting.'

"THE COLOURED DIGGER" He came and joined the colours, when the War God's anvil rang, He took up modern weapons to replace his boomerang, He waited for no call-up, he didn't need a push, He came in from the stations, and the townships of the bush. He helped when help was wanting, just because he wasn't deaf; He is right amongst the columns of the fighting A.I.F. He is always there when wanted, with his Owen gun or Bren, He is in the forward area, the place where men are men. He proved he's still a warrior, in action not afraid, He faced the blasting red hot fire from mortar and grenade; He didn't mind when food was low, or we were getting thin, He didn't growl or worry then, he'd cheer us with his grin. He'd heard us talk democracy, They preach it to his face Yet knows that in our Federal House there's no one of his race. He feels we push his kinsmen out, where cities do not reach, And Parliament has yet to hear the Abo's maiden speech.

Big Mac cost a mere five million dollars, yet it is ranked as the world's third fastest computer. If you consider that each of the other top five fastest supercomputers cost many times what Big Mac did, you can see why the folks at Virginia Tech has caused such a stir; they've proven that supercomputing does not have to be high priced. Possibly taking a cue from Virginia Tech, the Australian Military has recently put together a cluster of 16 Xserves for use in that country's war gaming effort. The communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) (DRV) took control in the northern half of the country and the non-communist Republic of Vietnam (RVN) in the south. From the late 1950s, a civil war developed in South Vietnam between the communist supported National Liberation Front (NLF) with its military arm the Viet Cong (VC) and the US backed Government of Ngo Dinh Diem. The war intensified in 1963, following the assassination of Diem and his replacement by a series of unstable ‘revolving door’ governments. On 3 August 1962, following negotiations with the United States and at the request of the RVN, 30 Australian Army training advisers arrived in South Vietnam to join US Army advisers in what later became Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV). Their tasks primarily were to assist in training RVN ground forces in jungle warfare, village defence and related activities. The Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) strength peaked at 202 in December 1970.
