Welcome
The School of Earth and Geographical Sciences, at the University of Western Australia in Perth, was formed in 2002 by merging three Departments: Geography; Geology and Geophysics; and Soil Science and Plant Nutrition. The merger created a unique combination of expertise spanning physical, chemical and biological aspects of the environment as well as the impact of human activities on that environment: from deep rocks to regolith and soil surface to landscape processes, marine and environmental science to an understanding of the nature and function of past and present environments. The new School emphasises an integrated global perspective on issues posed by the Earth and its environment. The School has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching . The strong research culture underpins undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, providing an enriching experience to students.

Australia's Geography
Tropical Coast; Torrid Interior
Australia is the world's flattest and driest land mass, after Antarctica, with an average elevation of 300 m (about 1,000 ft). With almost the same square miles as the United States, its low-lying coastal plains, averaging about 65 km (about 40 mi) in width, fringe the continent. The mountains adjacent to the coasts cause most rainfall to run toward the sea and leave 90 percent of the land semi-arid. The interior (" Outback" ) is predominantly a series of great plains, or low plateaus, which are generally higher in the northeast. View a map of Australia here.
The country was once part of the enormous landmass Gondwanaland, which earlier formed part of the super-continent called Pangaea. Much of its geological history is remarkably ancient the oldest known rock formations date from three billion to 4.3 billion years in age.
Australia is the most sparsely populated of the inhabited continents, and is legendary for its remote, deserted outposts. (You can fly from Sydney to Perth over 2,000 miles and see no towns!) The vast majority of Australians live in the ten largest cities along the coast (in the east, southeast, and southwest). Meanwhile, the Royal Flying Doctor Service is on constant call to provide medical service for the 14 percent of people in remote areas. The service covers the vast interior, which comprises two-thirds of Australia, with physicians operating from bases equipped with radio stations.

http://sunniebunniezz.com/educational/australiageo.htm
Australia
Australia is a continent
and it's a country, too!
It lies in the Southern Hemisphere
in oceans deep and blue. The equator rests above it,
which is how it got its name.
Australis stands for "southern"
and "Down Under" means the same. The Indian Ocean is on its left.
The Pacific's on its right.
And the stars strewn across its southern skies
are big and bold and bright. Indonesia, New Guinea and the Philippines rise above it on the globe. Antarctica's spread beneath it, Wear a winter coat, it's cold! Australia's highest point is Mt. Kosciusko, It's one of only two places Australians will see snow. The other is Tasmania, both an island and a state but to get there you must navigate the waves of the Bass Strait. Lake Eyre is the lowest point in South Australia's deepy depths. The "Outback" in its interior is grazing land and yet, Most people live in the cities that lie along her shores. Leaving the Outback far less peopled and belonging Out of Doors.

Institute of Australian Geographers (Inc) go to IAG homepage go to IAG99 - Indigenous Issues Sessions Program At the Annual General Meeting of the Institute of Australian Geographers in Hobart in January 1997, the Institute agreed to establish an Indigenous Issues Study Group.
Objects of the Study Group The objects of the Indigenous Issues Study Group are:
a) to enhance the visibility and accessibility of the important work being done by geographers on a range of indigenous issues, particularly, but not only, native title, indigenous rights and resource management, within the discipline; b) to enhance the visibility and credibility of geography in research in indigenous issues; c) to provide a foundation for improving employment prospects for geography graduates in a range of areas with indigenous organisations; and d) to encourage and facilitate networking and communication between members of the IAG engaged in work in these fields with colleagues in similar organisations overseas, including the NZGS, CAG, and AAG.
Rationale for the Study Group It is noted that:
  • geographers are amongst the most numerous group of professionals working with indigenous peoples or on indigenous issues, apart from anthropologists and lawyers;
