The program aims also to instil self-confidence and assertiveness, and teamwork skills, and to encourage clear thinking in the presentation of an argument. These aims are achieved through a "Public Hearing" where teams of students present the case for the development, against the development, or in favour of a compromise solution.

Research interests My research interests include gender, migration, and regional development. These interests follow a realisation after working on transport economics that places are linked in unequal ways and changes in transport connections favour only some locations and groups of people. My recent PhD research draws heavily on the analysis of movements of people based not only on census data but also on the documentation and analysis of indigenous lives of Eastern Indonesian women and their oral narratives. The contrast that these narratives provide to other representations of the more conventional economic approach requires a theoretical reconfiguration of our notions of place and identities, as Victoria Lawson suggested in her research on geographies of movement. I have sought to show how our understanding of contemporary migration requires us to pay attention not only to economic issues but also to a space of history and memory, and to show how this space is also open to contestation. I approach women migration as a re-positioning of self in the way Allan Pred (1990: 16-7) writes in his book, Making Histories and Constructing Human Geographies:
upon, as well, her varied positions in the network

Australian Geography
Australia is a land of contrasts: sweeping golden beaches, coral reefs rich with marine life, tropical rainforests, mountain ranges, vast grazing lands and sparse deserts. One of the oldest continents, Australia is as wide as the distance from Kuala Lumpur to Taipei and as long as the distance from Singapore to Manila. It is the only country to occupy an entire continent. Surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Australia has many animals and plants, which are unique on the planet. The surface geology is typically old and flat.

Top of Page Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. Australia is an island, surrounded by water. It is located on the smallest continent in the world. Population: 17.5 million Geographic size: 2.97 million square miles Capital: Canberra Major cities and population: Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, and Adelaide.
Geographic Landmarks
Top of Page Australia has a very dramatic landscape. Australia is famous for its "outback," the remote lands of the interior. The desert outback covers most of the interior. It is too hot, dry and barren to support many people. Eastern Australia has large areas of grasslands, used primarily for sheep and cattle ranches. Australia also has some mountainous areas and plateaus scattered throughout the country. The Blue Mountains, on the south-eastern end of Australia, get their name from the blue haze caused by oil droplets given off from the eucalyptus trees.

A. saligna (copied for educational purposes, Maneveldt 2000) Biology, Geography and Impacted Ecosystems The fynbos is a unique ecosystem situated within the highly endemic Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. This region, which represents one of six floristic regions worldwide, has the highest recorded plant species density for any temperate or tropical region in the world (Holmes and Cowling 1997). Within this 89,000 km region, 73% of plant species are endemic (Willis et al. 1996). The fynbos ecosystem occurs on the Cape Folded Belt Mountains and the adjacent coastal strip in the southern and southwestern Cape Province of South Africa (Richardson et al. 1989). The soils of the fynbos are nutrient-poor and support mainly shrubs and grasses. This ecosystem, however, provides an essential function as a water catchment in the Mediterranean climate of South Africa where droughts are a seasonal occurrence (van Wilgen and Richardson 1985). Its land mass of nearly 7.7 million km2 makes it the sixth largest country in area after Russia, Canada, China, the United States and Brazil. It is the flattest and (after Antarctica) the dryest of continents, yet it has extremes of climate and topography. There are rainforests and vast plains in the north, snowfields in the south east, desert in the centre and fertile croplands in the east, south and south west. About one third of the country lies in the tropics. Australia has a coastline of 36,735km - if it were possible to drive non-stop along the entire coast at 60 km/h it would take about 24 days to complete the trip. The continent is one of the oldest land masses - continental bedrock exposed by erosion is more than 3,000 million years old - and is the flattest of the continents because it lies near the centre of a tectonic plate. The average elevation is less than 300 metres, compared with the world’s mean of about 700 metres. The Australian Alps in the south east contain Australia’s highest ground, the highest point being Mount Kosciusko (2,228 metres). Australia is the only continent without current volcanic activity - the last eruption took place 1400 years ago at Mt. Gambier.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Australia became a commonwealth of the British Empire in 1901. It was able to take advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef. A referendum to change Australia's status, from a commonwealth headed by the British monarch to an independent republic, was defeated in 1999. Our Cities
Australia's cities are very young by world standards. But they have a lot to offer both inhabitants and visitors. Sydney Sydney is the capital of the state of New South Wales. It was settled in 1788 by the British soldiers and convicts who came as part of the First Fleet. From these inauspicious beginnings, Sydney has developed into a prosperous and exciting city spread around some of the world's most beautiful real estate - Sydney Harbour. It now has a population of approximately 4 million. Melbourne Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria. It was settled in 1835 and is one of the few cities that was founded as a free settlement. As a result of the fabulous Victorian gold-rush, it has grown into a gracious city with wide streets, monumental buildings and spacious parks and gardens. Brisbane The capital of Queensland lies on the threshold of the tropics. Built around the largest commercial river in Australia, the Brisbane River, it was founded in 1823 and is now a thriving metropolis. It is within an easy hour's drive of the Gold Coast, one of the most popular holiday destination in the country.
