The big wineries traditionally have blended grapes grown in several regions to make some of their best (and most expensive) wines (including Grange). So a broad appellation, such as Australia, South Australia or South Eastern Australia, does not always mean cheap wine, though many wines labeled South Eastern Australia are indeed from warm interior regions that make easy-drinking, low-priced wines. That appellation covers three states South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales and the vast majority of Australia's vineyard land. For something worth opening on a special occasion, look to more specific indications. The A-list districts for quality wines are in South Australia. Victoria is next. New South Wales has a handful of important areas. Western Australia, on the other side of the continent, is better known for its whites because the reds too often taste strongly of herbs or vegetables.

By Harvey Steiman Australia is a big country, covering about as much area as the United States, so it's no surprise that its red wines, from widely separated regions, are profoundly different. Near the coast in South Australia, Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale are the names most familiar to American consumers. They produce the sunny, generous style most frequently associated with Aussie wines. Wines from Clare are also influenced by the coastal climate and have more of a tangy bite. Shiraz is king in all three regions, but most of the country's old Grenache vines are here, too.

Summer stretches to the brink of winter
Wednesday 2 June 2004:Brendan O’Keefe and Ashleigh Wilson report on weather patterns around the country.

  • How do satellites help us predict the weather? What information can you gather just by looking at the weather page in The Australian? How will your plans be effected by this week’s predictions?
  • Draw a diagram to display the effects of global warming. Does global warming account for the changes in temperature reported in the story?
  • Use a flowchart to describe how analysing and predicting weather patterns has changed in the past 100 years.
  • Write a script for a weather channel on a day when the weather went crazy at Uluru. Illustrate the event.
