High lights (2003) The 2003 National Final was held at Sea World on the Gold Coast on 2 June. The eight state and territory finalists were determined by the results of the school round, held in March. Competing in the National Final were: Matthew Davis (ACT), Anna Houghton (Qld), (WA), Matthew Plozza (Vic), David Rooney (SA), Kai Scott (Runner-up), Benjamin Vance (NSW), and Stephanie Wallace (Tas). Part of the prize for winning their state or territory was a fantastic weekend at Sea World. The students arrived at Coolangatta airport the Friday night before the Final and squeezed into the mini-bus with all their luggage for the trip to our weekend accommodation, Sea World Nara Resort. On Saturday morning we went out on the Broadwater on the research vessel Sea World 1 . With the help of Robert Landman, Trevor Long and other Sea World staff, we trawled for plankton and examined the catch under a microscope, checked out the GPS and radar on board, looked at the efforts to stabilize the Broadwater's outlet to the sea, and generally enjoyed a morning out on the water. Over lunch we caught part of the Ski Challenge Show before checking in for our helicopter flight with Sea World Aviation. The helicopter took five passengers at a time so we split into two separate flights. What a way to take a geography lesson! From the natural areas of the spit, through the massive amount of canal developments, to diverting the river around the new conference centre, it was all laid out before us.

the geography ..... The climate in Australia is varied and ranges from tropical to sub alpine. Australia is also the oldest land mass on earth and the most eroded of all continents, the nearby island state of Tasmania being the exception. This vast land mass is also the most stable of all continents, with few major fault lines. This means that Australia lacks high mountains such as what you find in neighbouring New Zealand. However all the eons of erosion have formed some of the strangest geographical features on earth, such as Ayers Rock in the Northern Territory or the Bungle Bungle Mountains and The Pinnacles of Western Australia.
Australia is also the driest inhabited continent on earth, but the eastern seaboard where the majority of the population is concentrated, is a lush and fertile area, with a climate ranging from temperate to tropical. The main mountain range is known as the Great Dividing Range or Eastern Highlands. This long mountain chain separates the green eastern seaboard from the barren Outback. The southern end of the Great Dividing Range has an area known as the Snowy Mountains, or otherwise known as the Australian Alps. This area actually receives more snow than Switzerland, and is the only area suitable for skiing in Australia. Australia also contains many pockets of tropical and temperate rain forest on the eastern coast, but the predominate forest in Australia is Eucalypti Forest or more commonly known as Gum Trees.
