Preamble
Democracy is the key to cultural value
The future of australian culture
There has probably never been a better time than the present to re-assess our national cultural policy. Australia, like the rest of the world, is at a critical moment in its history. Here, as elsewhere, traditional values and ideologies are in flux and the speed of global economic and technological change has created doubt and cynicism about the ability of national governments to confront the future. What is distinctively Australian about our culture is under assault from homogenised international mass culture. Ironically, our culture has never been more vital than it is now. At every level of society, Australians are engaged in cultural activities that are helping to re- invent the national identity, and most Australians would agree on the need to enhance and enrich our culture. To achieve this, cultural policy must enter the mainstream of federal policy-making.
What is australian culture?
Culture arises from the community, even when the community may not be fully aware of it. It encompasses our entire mode of life, our ethics, our institutions, our manners and our routines, not only interpreting our world but shaping it. The most highly developed and imaginative aspects of our culture are the arts and sciences which are fed back to the community by the most talented individuals.

International Projection of Australian Culture
Australia stands to benefit substantially from sharing the best of its culture with the rest of the world. In recent years a major effort has been made to send Australian artists, exhibitions and films to countries important in our web of international relationships. We have worked, in particular, to better coordinate international cultural activity and link it more closely with our trade and investment efforts. The Australia Council's objective is to spend at least half ($2.5million) of its international cultural budget in our region. Through the funding of Australian artists and cultural activity overseas, the Council is making a significant contribution to the development of the arts in Australia. The Government supports this approach by the Australia Council and believes the nation, as well as the artists, companies and institutions involved, benefit from a confident projection of Australian cultural diversity and energy to new audiences overseas. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has also been increasingly changing the focus and scope of its international cultural relations program in recent years.

The original culture of Australia can only be surmised: cultural patterns among the remote descendants of the first Australians cannot be assumed to be unchanged after 53,000 years of human habitation of the continent. Much more is known about the richly diverse cultures of modern Aboriginal Australians, or at least of those few who survived the impact of European colonisation. (For more on this, see

Canberra, 1-4 October 2002 sponsored by
The Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research
The last decade has advanced our knowledge of Australian indigenous languages and the archaeological record, and has also seen an upsurge in hypotheses and controversies in prehistory, including linguistic prehistory. The time is ripe to assess the discoveries and theories, and to provide a forum for cross-fertilisation between Australian and world prehistory; and between the different disciplines which contribute to our overall understanding of prehistory. ARCLING II has been planned for 2002 to bring together archaeologists, linguistsand others to record progress made and map out the challenges we now face. The first ARCLING conference was held in Darwin in 1991, bringing together leading archaeologists, linguists and anthropologists from Australia and overseas to share ideas and build foundations for an interdisciplinary approach to the prehistory of Australia, drawing on international work of a similar kind. This resulted in the publication of Archaeology and Linguistics: Aboriginal Australia in Global Perspective edited by PatrickMcConvell and Nicholas Evans, published by Oxford University Press.

Up Australia by Region [ Culture ] History Nature People Sports ... Travel Information About Australia Australian Culture Theatre In the early 19th and first half of the 20th century, Australia looked to London's West End, Europe and Broadway for theatrical imports and inspiration. Economic growth and large-scale immigration in the 1940s and 1950s created new and larger audiences for theatre and an interest in Australian playwrights examining the Australian experience. Ray Lawler's "Summer of the Seventeenth Doll", which premiered in 1955, was an instantaneous success when it opened in a performance by the Australian Drama Company. The establishment of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust in 1954, which was designed to sponsor local performing arts, led to a new period of growth for Australian theatre. Increased government funding in the 1960s assisted new experimental theatre companies such as the Pram Factory in Melbourne and the Nimrod Theatre in Sydney. The National Institute of Dramatic Art, Australia's major theatre school, was established in 1958 and became the fertile training ground for some of Australia's best actors, among them Mel Gibson and Judy Davis.

    About Australian Culture Australian Facts
Australia is the world's largest island (7,713,360 square kilometres, 2,978,145 square miles) and the smallest continent with a population of nearly 19 and a half million. Australia's landscape is as diverse as its culture. From barren deserts to spectacular World Listed Heritage parks to one of the Wonders of the World, the Great Barrier Reef, it's no wonder that so many travellers flock to the shores of this isolated island. Australia is a relatively new country in terms of European history that began when Captain Arthur Philip arrived at Botany Bay on 26th of January 1788. However, Australia's original inhabitants have the longest continuous cultural history in the world with origins dating back to the last Ice age. People from many countries worldwide have come to call Australia home. Until World War II Australia was predominately settled by the British and Irish. However, after this time, large immigrations from Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Turkey and Yugoslavia have hit Australia's shores. More recent influxes have seen many immigrants from Asia. It is because of this multicultural melting pot that Australia's culture is so diverse. To find more facts on Australia, visit one of these websites.
