C onvict C reations C om - The hidden story of Australia's missing links "Probably the most unusual country in the world. Australia has countless unwritten rules that are never spoken about or discussed. " Robert Treborlang Welcome to Australia! This is a peculiar country where the principles of culture appear to have been turned upside down. Australians seem blissfully unaware of the achievements of their academics.... yet will celebrate long dead horses and bushrangers. They are forgetful to the words of their national anthem..... but it would be wrong to say they are not patriotic as a song about a suicidal sheep thief seems to instill them with a great deal of pride! If they like you, they wont give you compliments. Instead, they will call you names like bastard, drongo or dickhead and then laugh at all the silly things you have done! Although they don't know much about them, the people they choose to represent their interests are also a curious bunch. Their first prime minister was known as " Toby Tosspot " due to his fondness for booze. Another PM held an entry in the

The Encyclopaedia of South Australian Culture
Most Australians believe that Queenslanders and Tasmanians are somehow quite strange and peculiar people. I am sure they are correct in their beliefs. Yet the peculiarities of your average South Australian are typically overlooked and remain largely unrecognised. The reason is simple: a lot of people visit Queensland and Tasmania. Both states are popular tourist destinations. Whereas hardly anybody visits South Australia. The entire state conducts its business as if enclosed in a giant bubble, much like in the old Twilight Zone episode, maintaining the fantasy that the rest of the country knows that it even exists. The purpose of this Encyclopaedia is to promote South Australia, perhaps not in the way that the SA Tourism board would choose to promote it, but as a few cynical ex-pats who grew up in South Australia remember it: with a combination of fondness and loathing. Along with contributions by anyone who has lived, still lives, or currently find themselves living in South Australia. Contributions, comments and criticisms are welcomed, and can be sent to

Culture and the arts
Australia's contemporary arts are as unique and diverse as the society and continent they come from. They reflect an ancient landscape that is home to both the world's oldest continuous cultural traditions and also to a rich mix of migrant cultures. Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists alike respond to the imaginative challenges Australia presents in diverse ways and have developed new modes of expression that have brought Australia's art and culture to international attention. All forms of the performing arts, including music, theatre and dance, have strong followings in Australia.
Visual arts
In the past 30 years, visual artists have increasingly played a vital role in shaping Australia's image of itself. Since the early 1970s, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists have developed new modes of expression that have brought their art and culture to international attention. The transfer of Dreaming designs from sand paintings to boards and canvases by Pintupi elders in the central desert community of Papunya in 1971 was just one of many artistic initiatives that have created powerful new connections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Australian culture, lifestyles and assumptions
Summary of topics covered
You can read the descriptive text which follows, or jump direct from the links in the table. We Australians understand the mainstream cultures of Britain and the USA, because our television is flooded with culturally-soaked material. But aside from lowest-common-denominator stuff like soapies, few foreigners realise that we have our own culture, our own cultural references, and our own assumptions. This set of pages will explore some of those aspects. We have to begin somewhere, so we will start with the Australian folk food, "Vegemite" Next, we will explore the world of the young Australian surfers, the Nippers Then there are the bushfires . They are a natural part of summer life in Australia, so sooner or later, you will read and hear about them. This offering features some JPEG files of fires and fire damage, and an account of the January 1994 fires that ravaged Sydney. One of my favourite activities is wandering around in the bush my excuse is that I am looking for aboriginal rock engravings which are common on the Sydney sandstone. You will find some information about them here, and also a number of illustrations, most of which are also available in a larger format by clicking on them.

Friendly lot the Aussies. Theyll invite you to a barbie in their backyard, toss a shrimp on it for you...greet you with a gday mate and proceed to delight you with the colorful language that comes from emerging as a nation in complete geographical isolation from the rest of the world. Of course not everyone speaks strine (Australian pronounced the Australian way). The following guide will help you, though, to understand those down under at the average informal outback gathering. One trend you might notice, when listening to Australian speech, is the use (or perhaps over use)of the long e sound, which is tacked on to the end of many a word. If you are offered a tinnie, for instance, -take it, as it is a can of beer. If a mate will be back in a minnie, you can safely expect him back in sixty seconds. If the postie has delivered a pressie- then you are in luck. You have been given a present and it has arrived courtesy of your mail man. Unless he has chucked a sickie of course. (Telephoned to say he will not be at work..perhaps for no reason other than he feels like a day off or at the bodyOffer(16872) beach.)

The Australian flag is composed of Union Jack and six white stars on a blue background. The Union Jack is a part of the flag due to the fact that Australia is a former British colony and is still a member of the Commonwealth. The five stars to the right are called "The Southern Cross" and represent a constellation of stars visible in the southern hemisphere. The last and biggest star is called the Federation Star. It represents the Federation of the Australian colonies in 1901.
There is also the Aboriginal flag. It was created in 1971. The black represents the Aboriginal people, the red the Earth and their spiritual relationship to the land, and the yellow the sun, the giver of life.

Culture Initially the dominant way of life in Australia substantially reflected the heritage of the British settlers. Customs were modified as the settlers adapted to the new country and its exceptionally fine climate. A culture evolved that, although based on British traditions, is peculiar to Australia. Since the 1960s, the arrival of large numbers of immigrants from continental Europe and Asia has led to the development of a more multicultural society in which the Aborigines, marginalized since the arrival of Europeans, have also begun to play a larger part.
