North Island Tour
I spent two nights in Wellington then drove north to Napier on Hawkes Bay to visit Cape Kidnappers and then inland to Taupo and Rotorua to look for Blue Duck and to tour the geothermal areas. . I continued north to Miranda on the Firth of Thames to look for shorebirds and then north through Auckland to the Bay of Islands where I visited Arhoa Island. The trip ended in Auckland. Wellington
The ferry between the south island and north island runs from Picton to Wellington. The EZi Car Rental is one block from the parking lot of the ferry terminal in Picton. After you turn in your car, they drive you to the ferry terminal.
The EZi Rental Car met me at the terminal in Wellington with the new car and I drove to the YHA in downtown Wellington. The Y has a small parking area in front where you can park to unload. If this is filled you can park in the grocery store lot across the street. After that you are on your own to find a spot. I ended up 3 blocks away at the Municipal parking garage. The next day I toured the Te Papa (Our Place in Maori) Museum which was within walking distance of the YHA. The natural history section had a mounted bird exhibit and in the children's corner there was a case with a Royal Albatross displayed standing on one wing tip. Standing in front of this display you really get a feel for what it means to have a 9 foot wingspan.

Attractions The city's major attraction is Te Papa, the new national museum of New Zealand. It opened in 1998 and since then it has received over 7 million visitors 30% from overseas. As New Zealand's largest cultural investment and Wellington's most exciting attraction, Te Papa is playing a major role in increasing visitor numbers to the capital city. In 2000, the city also opened a state-of-the-art 40,000-seat stadium, which hosts top international performing artists and sporting action. Another new attraction is the Karori Sanctuary. Locally referred to as the city's best-kept secret, these 252 hectares (623 acres) of regenerating forest are just minutes from the city center. Visitors can walk in the bush surrounded by wildlife and birdcalls. If You Have 1 Day No visit to Wellington would be complete without a tour of Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand. Start here at opening time (10am) and allow a minimum of 2 hours (longer if you have children, who will want to investigate all the interactive exhibits). Then opt for lunch at one of the many cafes in nearby Courtenay Place. Alternatively, head up to Tinakori Village and have a quick meal at Tinakori Bistro before visiting the charming Katherine Mansfield House. In the same neighborhood, finish off the afternoon with a leisurely 1-hour wander through the Botanic Gardens, taking in the fabulous harbor views. Take the cable car back down to the Lambton Quay and repump your veins full of caffeine at the oh-so-trendy Caffe Astoria, on Lambton Quay. Relax for the rest of the afternoon before exploring your dinner options. Try for one of the best Icon at Te Papa, Logan Brown, or Roxburgh Bistro.

... The Future
A Brief History of Alpaca Farming in New Zealand
The successful introduction of alpacas into New Zealand in the modern era can be attributed to the efforts of two men who refused to let government bureaucracy interfere in their plans to import and farm alpacas in New Zealand. Ian Nelson who in August 1985 convinced the government to change the status of the animals from a zoo animal to a farm animal. Murray Bruce whose efforts finally brought about the establishment of a protocol with Chile (July 1987) which in turn led to several large importations of alpacas and llamas. First importation of alpacas into New Zealand. This herd was part of a large herd of 336 alpacas shipped to Australia in July 1858 by Charles Ledger on behalf of the British Government. Of the 336 animals, 276 animals survived the journey to Australia. Many of the New Zealand animals finished up on the property of George Rhodes of Purau in Lyttelton. 20th August 1985 Ian Nelson of Taupo, finally convinces the Minister of Agriculture to change the status of alpacas and llamas from zoo animals to farm animals, thereby paving the way for businesses and breeders to import direct from Chile. To achieve this goal, Ian had to complete an Environmental Impact Assessment complete with comments from no less than 13 Government departments. Ian was further hindered in his efforts to obtain an import permit in December when it was found that the protocol with Britain was not finalized.

Structural Geology, Tectonics and Field Geology in Fiordland, New Zealand
Tectonic Maps of New Zealand
Overview
One of the frontiers of understanding how continental margins respond to changing plate boundary conditions is in the lower crust. Some major unsolved problems include (1) how middle and lower crustal shear zones form and evolve in reponse to changing plate tectonic driving forces; (2) whether examples of changing plate boundary dynamics are preserved in ancient orogenic belts or elsewhere; (3) how we recognize, measure and interpret these changes; and (4) how processes operating at upper, middle and lower crustal levels of an orogenic system interact with one another. The answers to these questions have very important implications for interpreting the significance of deformation patterns in ancient orogenic belts and areas where plate tectonic settings are poorly defined. Fiordland, New Zealand is unsusual in the sense that lower to upper crustal levels of a deeply eroded orogen are exposed. This presents the excellent opportunity to examine how different crustal levels of an orogen evolves through several major tectonic transitions. These transitions include: Cretaceous arc-continent collision; extensional collapse of thickened continental crust; rifting, and evolution of a transtensional followed by a transpressional plate boundary. We are involved in a collaborative University of Vermont-University of Sydney, Australia-IGNS, New Zealand effort to investigate the Cretaceous to Tertiary evolution of Fiordland. Since 1996, we have been engaged in several major field-mapping and sampling programs designed to examine a range of structural, petrological, and metamorphic problems. Two main streams of this research are summarized below.
