New Zealand so far has been very hassle-free. This hostel is packed with lots of great features (bars, café, movie rooms, TV rooms etc.), although the rooms are a bit sterile and the lift appears to be very close to death trap classification. I left the Pink House hostel in Sydney at 4am to get the bus to the airport. Tonight will hopefully be the first decent night's sleep I've gotten since Melbourne. My room was pretty dodgy last night. Beer cans everywhere, as well as two poms who smoked joints back-to-back while they exchanged stories about taking various illegal substances they'd indulged in around King's Cross. Generally, the mood of the room was caught permanently in that moment in the early morning when the pot has run out, and everyone's coming down. Paranoia, antisocial and eerily quiet between the odd trivial remarks. Understandably I didn't spend a lot of time in there. The movie room was a very good alternative - warm, friendly and of course entertaining. The Dutch couple whose dorm I stayed in previously were in there, as well as some girls from Newcastle who thoughtfully let me inside the hostel very red-eyed at 7am. They'd been in Sydney a few weeks, previously through China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Asked them a lot of questions about Vietnam and Cambodia and got some good information off them. They had apparently no hassles at all up there which is encouraging to hear, as I'd like to go up there at some point.

It is held usually every year, at different sites around Australia and New Zealand. This year, for the first time, the Forum will be in Western Australia, where it will be hosted by a number of organisations keenly active in climate and its applications. The theme of the Forum is UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE AND ITS REGIONAL IMPACTS Including
  • Regional climate variability Impacts on primary industry Impacts on other industry Impacts on water resources Impacts on the broader environment
Participation is certainly not limited to Australians and New Zealanders or to people working in those countries. Input on relevant work from elsewhere in the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions is particularly welcome. The Forum traditionally provides a valuable opportunity for an exchange of information on a wide range of climate-related work. There is a strong emphasis on work in progress as well as recently completed work.

... About Orana Park
THE FIRST 10 YEARS How It All Began The idea for Orana Wildlife Park began when a New Brighton resident, Neville Jemmett, suggested to the Christchurch City Council that a zoo should built on the recently completed land-fill dump at Bexley. Naturally enough, the concept of having a new zoo in Christchurch was widely reported by the news media and soon caught the imagination of the public. The South Island Zoological Society was formed in July 1970, and in a matter of weeks, had grown from the original eight founding members to over one hundred. A number of public meetings were held to debate the concept behind a modern zoological park, as well as to consider the funding and ongoing support the new project would require. It was soon established that the new venture would be an open range wildlife park with the design reflecting a feeling of the animal's natural habitat. The site at Bexley proved totally unsuited for the construction of such a wildlife park, but it wasn't long before a new site was proposed on McLeans Island, on land to be leased from the North Canterbury Catchment Board. Right - Committee views the Orana Park Site for the first time, September 1970.

http://www.kiwi.bird.freeservers.com/
Welcome to the Kiwi Bird Page!
The "kiwi" (shown above) is a flightless New Zealand bird. ( New Zealanders also like to call themselves "Kiwis".) The kiwi (bird) is unusual in at least two respects. First, it is the only bird in the world that has its nostrils at the end of its beak. Second, the female kiwi has the largest egg, in proportion to its body size, of any bird in the world (except possibly for the hummingbird). Kiwi are about the same size as chickens, but their eggs are almost as big as those of ostriches! Kiwi birds have been designated as New Zealand "honorary mammals" . The only real native mammals in New Zealand are two kinds of forest-dwelling bats. Biologists and the like please note: the kiwi is a member of the order Apterygiformes and comes in six species, including ( Apteryx mantelli, Apteryx australis, Apteryx oweni , and Apteryx haasti Recent research seems to indicate that the kiwi evolved after New Zealand broke away from the ancient Australia/Antarctica supercontinent. However, kiwi left Australia for New Zealand at some point, possibly on land links via New Caledonia. So, although there are no wild kiwi left there, Australians may also proudly point to the kiwi as "their bird". You may see many beautiful New Zealand birds here , including a picture of a white kiwi and some information on how kiwi raise their young.

So what exactly is bittah?
Bittah.com is the hub of the Australian and New Zealand Tribes community. We offer a medium for communication, nothing more. This simplicity and understanding of our members has seen us grow from a small core community site to an increasingly growing tribal community. We pride ourselves on not having a community more interested in posting 1rd in the latest photoshop my mum thread and not having to listen to some fucknuckle about what we can and can not do with our site. Bittah was forged out of blood sweat and tears officially in June 2002. At the time, the central AU/NZ tribes site (snaggs.com) was becoming increasingly slow due to troubles with the backend and the physical pipe it was connected to. Put simply, it was dying. After months of this situation, squirrel talk began between a few people in the community about rebuilding snaggs as the situation was becoming extremely frustrating. Due to many reasons, we decided collectively to start a new site which better represented the tribes community as a whole instead of one main figure. At the time the latest interweb buzz word travelling the servers was "bittah" as in, bitterness. Everything fell into place after that. "Standard" had actually registered bittah.com months earlier for his future personal site. He offered the domain registration for the cause and the rest is history.

Queen Elizabeth II awarded this medal to the Managing Director of Dominion English Schools.
Everyone speaks English in New Zealand. Our English is pure and clear; it is an international English easily understood everywhere in the world. New Zealand English is very different from Australian English. New Zealand is a small, quiet and green country, with only 4 million people in a country as large as Chile, Italy or Japan. New Zealand is dominated by nature, with magnificent beaches, lakes and mountains. There are no snakes and very few predators in New Zealand. You can become a new person in New Zealand. You can relax, breathe fresh air, drink clean water, and meet friendly New Zealanders who enjoy helping visitors to practise English. Links to other New Zealand sites: New Zealand Weather Forecast
