cryonics life-extension room parties. Weeks earlier I had made many e-mail arrangements with cryonicists for meeting including a gathering of Australian cryonicists at my room parties. Dealing with the organizers of AussieCon was difficult. Charles Taylor, who was in programming, was the only person who ever responded to any of my e-mail messages of all the people I tried to contact from e-mail addresses on the AussieCon website. After several exchanges I got Charles to put me on the Nanotechnology panel and to create a Y2K panel, of which I would be moderator. The Y2K panel took some arguing, but I convinced him that speculating about events in 100 days is similar to speculating about events in 100 years. (For my essays on the Y2K computer bug see the Computer section of my website.) It was Charlie who finally informed me that room parties were not allowed in the hotel where the events were being held and this was only after the hotel allowing parties was fully booked. It was not possible to contact the hotel directly since a booking agency was being used. Most of those at the booking agency were not very helpful either, but I finally found one helpful woman who put me on a waiting list. When she let me know of an available room from a cancellation, I took the room and sent her a personal money order for Aus$50 as a token of my appreciation. September 1st, 1999 disappeared from my life when I flew across the International Date Line (although I had a 40-hour September 12th on my return which could have been 43-hours had I not flown from Los Angeles to Toronto). In Melbourne, I shared the hotel room with Keith Lynch, who had also been my WorldCon roommate at Winnipeg, Glasgow & Los Angeles. Despite archiving CryoNet, receiving a Transport Training from Mike Darwin and more recently being President of the Life Extension Society in the Washington, DC area, Keith has still not signed-up with any cryonics organization and remains a "fellow traveler".

Unfortunately Queensland lacks a world class state zoo such as Melbourne or Taronga. I cannot see this being remidied in the future. Such a zoo would have to be in Brisbane (population and tourism numbers), fairly large in area and with excellent public transport access. There are two areas that come to mind, the Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens and the former Roma Street Goods Yard. Mount Cootha Zoological and Botanic Gardens has an excellent ring about it. Owned by the Brisbane City Council it is close to the city and has excellent existing a menities. The gardens are beautiful and animal exhibits could be easily incorporated. But this is not going to happen.

Kiwanis International - NZSP Division Two (Waikato) and Australia Division Six (Melbourne) Lisa's Trip Report A report on Lisa Woolerton's trip to Australia as part of the 1998 Kiwanis Australia - New Zealand Youth Exchange. Text and photograph by Lisa Woolerton Going to Australia has been one of the highlights of my life. I met many different people from all different backgrounds but mainly those people came from the big city that I was overawed by. To me, Melbourne is so far the biggest city I have ever seen, and is also the most exciting. I was given the opportunity to participate in activities such as visiting zoos, where I saw Australian Native Animals like the eagles, wombats, flying foxes, snakes and at the other zoo I saw bicens, buffalos, and rhinoceros. There was only one hiccup with my trip, I went when there was no gas available for showers, heaters or cooking. Never mind though, I still had a fantastic time. I arrived at the Melbourne Airport and was given a big warm welcome to Australia by Alan and Ivy Wren. I ate lunch with them and they took me to the place where I was to spend my first few nights in Australia. When I was staying with the McLennan family I was taken to the Queen Victoria Market, up the Rialto (which is a really tall building) from which we could see a lot of Melbourne, and the Healesville Sanctuary. This is where we saw the native animals such as the wombats and snakes (both of which I touched), and the eagles, platypus and flying foxes. We also visited the IMAX cinema (here there was a really big screen) and saw a documentary on The Elephant Kingdom. For dinner, my host family presented me with kangaroo meat and chicken sausages. I had never eaten these before so I was surprised that I liked them.

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION
This publication presents results, in respect of the 1996-97 financial year, from the first Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) census of organisations engaged in the operation of zoological gardens and aquaria, botanic gardens, and national and recreational parks.
The scope of the census was all employing businesses and statutory authorities classified to Class 9231, Zoological and Botanic Gardens and Class 9239, Recreational Parks and Gardens of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC). In addition, the botanic gardens, national parks and recreational parks and gardens activities of Commonwealth, State and local government authorities were included in the census even though these organisations are defined to another class of ANZSIC.
The publication has three parts, the first part presents data about zoological gardens and aquaria, the second about botanic gardens and the third national parks and recreational parks and gardens. The publication is one of a series to be issued in respect of 1996-97 covering cultural industries, which were partially funded by the Cultural Ministers' Council. NEW ZEALAND PARROTS Part I
Their Present Status and Distribution
by Martin Fingland ©
The New Zealand region contains a small but unique group of parrots that through a long period of isolation have developed specialised habits. This group have suffered greatly as a result of pressures brought about by the country's relatively recent human occupation - firstly Polynesians, followed by Europeans. Due to the destruction and modification of habitats and the introduction of predators and competitors, the parrots along with many other endemic New Zealand species, have disappeared from much of their former range. These species are now found in much reduced numbers or survive only as relict colonies in isolated areas such as small, predator-free islands. Few articles have been written concerning N.Z. parrots in Parrot Society of Australia News in the past, it therefore appears timely to relate the present situation, with the aim to increase awareness and appreciation for what are some of the most distinctive, specialised and, sadly, rarest parrots in the world. There are six native New Zealand parrot species , these being the Kakapo Kea Kaka Antipodes Island Parakeet ... Red-crowned Kakariki and Yellow-crowned Kakariki . The Kakariki species involve six N.Z. sub-species and a further four sub-species found outside the region, of which two are extinct. As there are only a few

JUNE NEWS Lion cubs and African wild dogs New home for white rhino Calls for Zoos to close elephant exhibits Do you use the search function? Do you find what you are looking for? Let me know what you think of it and how useful the results are for you. My site has no affiliation with any of the zoos, I am just layman with an obsession on the subject. So what I cannot provide is information on jobs at the various zoos. If that is what you are looking for my best advice is to check out the zoos websites, they often list jobs there. I classify a decent zoo according to
  • The efforts it goes into creating spacious, stimulating and naturalistic enclosures for its inhabitants.
  • The extent of conservation work the Zoo is involved with, including Captive Breding Programs and also work in the field.
  • The efforts that Zoos go to involve and inform the public. This includes Volunteer Societies(usually known as 'Friends of the Zoo')and sponsering of animals and exhibits. To inform the public this can include websites with news and detailed information of animals, the signage detailing the life and needs of species, how well the exhibits create an idea of the wild conditions and guided tours. A Red Panda at Mogo Zoo In 1863 the first zoo in the Australasian Region opened at Melbourne. This makes the Melbourne Zoo one of the oldest zoos in the world. Today it is very different from when it first opened. It also has very different priorities, as do all of the 'great' zoos; not just of Australia and New Zealand, but of the world.
