1. Introduction
Our approach to managing knowledge or expertise is to do it on-line, via multi-user networked environments that support group communication and collaboration. That is, we are interested in designing on-line environments within which users can engage socially with one another, and, in the process, discover, develop, evolve, and explicate knowledge relevant to shared projects and goals. We refer to online multi-user environments used in these ways as "knowledge communities." This chapter consists of two sections. In the first section we make the case for a deeply social approach to knowledge management. We begin with an example that depicts a number of ways in which the production and use of knowledge is fundamentally entwined with social phenomena. We note that this socially situated view of knowledge is supported by research in a number of disciplines, and also has made its way into the business discourse that surrounds knowledge management. This view raises a challenge for those designing technology: knowledge management systems must take into account, either explicitly or implicitly, the social context within which knowledge is produced and consumed.

Greg Goth A s e-commerce becomes ever more entrenched in the infrastructure of business-to-business communication, pioneers of a new concept believe they might have discovered a middle ground between the restrictions of a virtual private network and the near-anarchy of an industry portal—the online gated community. “VPNs are usually always tied to a very small, limited number of participants,” says attorney Dan Greenwood, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s e-commerce architecture program, and author of a recently released white paper on gated communities. “It’s not unusual to see VPNs between two and five organizations, and the incremental cost of scaling is relatively high. Those work well for what they do, but that approach is really precursory to the online gated community approach. “The industry portal is different for another reason,” Greenwood explains. “Those are, in a sense, too broad. In the generic industry portal, all you need to be a member, theoretically, is to be a member of an industry. That includes competitors, people who don’t have a business relationship with each other, or who ordinarily wouldn’t, because an industry is not a very tight formulation.”

AAM is a nonprofit trade association of qualified, independent attorney-mediators. Members of AAM must meet qualifications and ethical standards which meet or exceed state or Federal requirements for mediators. AAM's 300 plus members have collectively mediated in excess of 130,000 cases. AAM's role in the mediation process is to help potential users of mediation services find the attorney-mediator best suited to assist the parties in resolving their dispute. www.co.benton.mn.us Overview Benton County is one of the oldest counties in Minnesota and, at one time, was the largest. Benton County touts a rich industrial history and offers a variety of attractions today. The county is named in honor of Sen. Thomas Hart Benton of St. Louis, Mo. Benton was a strong advocate of free land laws, which, after the passage of the Homestead Act of 1860, led to the growth and development of the country. After St. Cloud was organized in 1856 and granite deposits were discovered in the area, granite companies in Benton County began shipping granite to sites throughout the world.
